How Dan Slott Changed Spider-Man Forever (Spider-Man Comics) 

I really liked Dan Slott's run up until Superior Spider-man ended. It felt pretty fresh and interesting to me

Not a lot of people know, but Dan Slott was hired as a consultant writer for Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man, especially since the game story is loosely based on his Big Time story run. He was also one of the writers for Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions, the game that basically kickstarted the whole Spider-Verse concept back to life. So love it or hate him, Slott's one of the most influential Spider-Man writers to date. I don't think there's denying that. A lot of his ideas were great too, even if a handful of them were often not executed that good.

Even Dan Slott's worst Spider-Man comics are better than the shit we got currently. He wasn't the best of the best but a really solid writer, with some great stories and ideas.

I think Spidey has always been tech based. The difference between then and Dan Slotts run is that during Big Time he got access to more resources he could use, therefore he was able to develop more vomplex and expensive tech. But he has always been tech based. The first time he captures Vulture he created an magnetic inversor to get his wings. In the early run he created the web-shooters, spider-tracers and even the spidey-signal, all low budget tech that he relied heavily upon in the original run. The problem with MCU spider-man is that the tech he is using is not really his, unlike the PS4 counterpart. MCU Peter got most of his tech from Stark and even when he made it on his own, it was using Starks resources, therefore depending on other hero to do his thing, something that no other version of the character ever did as their baseline behaviour.

To me Peter's growing story ended years ago. Clone Saga was a slight regression, but opportunity to set up the idea that he'd have to start balancing his family life with MJ and a kid on the way with being Spider-Man. OMD completely ruined that and regreessed him to basically early days, like a reboot without being a reboot. I think coming up on the 1000th issue of Spider-Man, (we are #919 with Wells ASM #25) I think there is enough time between now and then to hammer out a game plan for the next status quo shake up. I believe they should start building toward that soon around issue #930, we should start seeing a shift. I think for one it is time to put the drama between Peter and MJ to rest. Get them together, literally every other media adaptation of Spider-Man has this coupling, OMD has lasted long enough, and people have been begging for 16 years, enough is enough. Issue #930 should be the start of a run that sees them start to draw into each others orbit once again. Realize this in #950, get them back together in that issue ( I think 950 can be counted as a mile marker at least, not a full on milestone.) For the 20 or so issues, start to break down the Mephisto deal, the closer these two get, the closer Peter comes to proposing the more the memories he lost in the deal start to come back. Just little things like referencing when they were having money issues and MJ was worried about telling him, or the night they spent in the hospital when they 'lost' the baby. Just little things, that eagle-eyed fans might pick up on, or might even draw some people into checking out your back issues, for details. Then around #975-980, Peter remembers it all, the deal finally breaks down and they can finally be together again as they were. These last 20 issues should be treated as the race to the big #1000 a milestone of milestones. In this period, Peter and Mj are on the up and up, but not everything is great. Before proposing, Peter wants to get his life together on both sides. As Spider-Man he starts to fight smarter, ending fights with the least amount of damage possible, and as efficiently as possible. As Peter he's looking for work that could accommodate his heroic activities without jeopardizing his employment. Maybe he looks into working at Stark Industries (if Tony still has the company by then), his old job at Horizon, something in the Baxter Building with the FF, maybe he could even convince Reed and Sue to relaunch the Future Foundation as a place for young minds and young heroes, and work there as a mentor and/or teacher. In between all of this from the moment the deal started to break down and Peter and MJ grew closer, Mephisto should've been aware and doing all he can to stop it, even going as far as to use Norman and return him to Green Goblin with all the memories and knowledge of pre-OMD and everything else he may have forgotten. In the final 10 issues, I'd have everything come to bear. Norman returns as the Green Goblin, but with his sanity in check, enough to plan something big. He reunities the Sinister Six, maybe even the Sinister Tweleve and sends them all after Spider-Man. Peter has to run a gauntlet of his entire rogues gallery, and at the end #998-999, Norman Osborn recreates the Night Gwen Stacy Died, using MJ as a stand in for Gwen. Peter and Goblin have a huge fight, MJ goes over the bridge, but he makes the save this time. Him and Norman continue to go at it, and Peter pulls off the win, ending the night and issue, proposing to MJ in front of all his friends and allies on the hero side. Issue 1000 would be a special 50 or so page issue (maybe more, it is Spider-Man after all) and this issue is the grand payoff, the Wedding between Peter and MJ. An actual big wedding, paid for by Stark as a wedding gift to the both of them. Everyone is in attendance, from Avengers to X-Men to FF, for the hell of it why not have the Inhuman Royal Family make an appearance. Along with the civilian friends and family of Peter and MJ. Just this huge bash, for the two of them. *Excuse for why all the heroes are around, is Tony wanted the wedding to be huge and something to remember as a thank you to MJ for helping him and his mother with Stark back in the ANAD Era*. Felicia is there as a bridesmaid. Peter has Wolverine as one of the groomsmen ( a bit of payback for the Hellfire Gala just before AXE). This will be extremely controversial but I think in a bit of a surprise Wanda or Stephen, someone one with magical ties, can conjure up Gwen Stacy, and let her speak to Peter and MJ and finally put the nail in her coffin, letting her rest once and for all. Aunt May is a the Maid of Honor, special considerations. At the Altar while reciting their vows MJ recites her vows and somewhere in there, near the end of her vows, she purposely let's it slip that Peter is not only going to be her husband, but also a father. Ending with her rather iconic; "Face it Tiger, you just hit the Jackpot." I would love to say the end, but for all the happiness in this, I think there should still be a bit of a bittersweet note. After voes and the kiss. Aunt May is the first to congratulate them, on both their marriage and the +1. Before making room for others to do the same, while she watches from the side. At the height of this happiness, Aunt May approaches MJ and starts to talk to her. She ask her to look after Peter, and reverts back to treating him like a child, telling her all thethings he likes and dislikes. MJ powers through it, but soon starts to realize that something is wrong. Aunt May starts to fade away, becoming see through like a ghost. MJ screams for Peter, he rushes over, finding Aunt May disappearing. She finishes talking to MJ and turns to Peter, opens with "No deals this time. You have a good life, a beautiful wife, and what's certain to be a beautiful child. You have to let go, not everything is your responsibiltity." and just before she disappears completely, Ben appears beside her taking her hand. In clear view of everyone the two share a final hug with each other before disappearing completely. Ending the issue with a finally look a the place Aunt May and Ben disappeared with a ray of light on the horizon signaling a new day and by extension the start of a new chapter for Peter. At that point I'd probably put Main Spider-Man on a few months break. Try out a book with Ben as Chasm inspired by Peter's big fight and the wedding, to take his life into his own hands. Have him try out the hero thing once again, now as Chasm and trying to find himself but also being a bit confused as he tries to live up to Peter Parker's display against his rogues gallery. Let Kaine and Maddie Pryor join in on this book here and there as they both offer their own insights, and maybe have him meet the other Spider-people like Cindy and Julia (going to Julia mainly to find out what his path is rather than finding out along the way).

Zeb Well's Spider-Man era makes Dan Slott's era of Spidey look like a masterpiece Hell I even loved Spider Verse and Superior Spider-Man since they were really interesting and intriguing

The thing with Superior Ock is that it's not really anything new in the sense that we've seen this side of Ock before. We've seen him be willing to be altruistic and help Spidey out, or caring for May or even respecting Spidey on a professional level. It's also not necessary for him and is kinda ooc to inhabit his foe's body in the sense that he would want his triumphs and victories and accomplishments to be recognized as being made by him, Otto Octavius. Not as the Superior Spider-Man inhabiting his foe's abilities, body, personal life, reputation, everything. He would do it on his own, and either way it's gets undone later when he's back to being a villain again lol. These kinds of things never stick anyways because of the nature of superhero comics.

Have you guys noticed that in Dan Slott's run of Spider-man, Peter rarely makes the self deppreciating inner monologing of his. First, I was not a fan of rapid Slott's inner monologing of the stuff that's happening around him or what he feels and etc. Then I realized maybe it was part of his growth. It's as if tho he grew out of it. He was finally winning.

Peter's thing is his relatablity. If he does get a company it should be a small business. Lots of people have a family business or small business

I’d argue that Spider-Man’s defining characteristic is that he does what’s right no matter what the impact on himself. This usually shows up in his personal life but the doing the right thing is the key element.

Zeb Wells Tasm run being “Not that really good.” is an understatement it’s like saying Sins Past is masterpiece. Just wish they let Peter grow and let him get his PhD again and rebuild Parker Industries.

Good breakdown! I agree with pretty much all these points. I enjoy early Slott a lot, just think he should've bowed out after Superior. And it's nice to see a video where someone treats his run with respect and points to all the good parts of it!

Honestly, I wanted to read all of the Dan Slott's Spider-man run from BIG TIME to SPIDER-VERSE; keyword wanted. So, what happened? I know I will probably get backlash but I didn't like his writing. Carlie Cooper doesn't feel like a character. Just a shallow and miserable reminding of how Spider-man should always have a girlfriend according to the status quo. Also, Mary Jane is just there to remind us about ONE MORE DAY every time she appears on the page. There are some cute moments involving her, like when Peter, Carlie, and MJ talked about science and acting. But if you delete her from the story nothing in the plot will change. Although I may be too much critical I have some things that still kept me reading the BIG TIME. Aunt May being proud that Peter got a job that he would enjoy doing, or when Black Cat helped Spider-man steal artificial vibranium from FISK. And all the Hobgoblin stuff was cool too. Let's talk about Horizon Labs. It's okay, overall to say. Sorry, I just cringed a lot when all the people surrounding him there were acting over-NERDY. Slott could have done something more with them, maybe add some character to them so that they wouldn't feel like talking pictures, I don't know. In the end, Spider-man himself doesn't feel like Spider-man or Peter Parker. Spider-man makes too many jokes and Peter himself is irresponsible at times. Personally, I will just read The Superior Spider-man run

Hey lewis can you make a video on how would superior spiderman be adapted in the mcu ?. In my view I would have luke carlyle as mcu's doc ock. In the comics he stole doc ock's arms and then peter and ock teamed up against him. In the mcu, he can be an ex AIM scientist who comes across raimi doc ock's work and designs his arms. Then after peter fights him he switches bodies. Hence we get a superior spiderman in the mcu.

I liked slott actually tried new stuff. He pushed characters outside of your comfort zones. He made norman Osborn and doc ock global treats and took peter away from the street level. Unrelated but I always thought professor would be a perfect job for peter. Teacher and scientist in one.

Dan Slott did a great job leading up too Superior Spider-Man. I don't think he thought he was going to keep writing it after the Superior Spider-Man run. And MJ was really well handled in Slott's run. One More Day was trash and he did a great job changing things. Nick Spencer was also great after he took over. Worldwide was decent at best. Slott did a good job doing Clone Consipircy and the Secret Empire tie-in was really good. Ock was the best character in Slott's run, though. I think that Carlie Cooper and Bobbi Morse were good realtionships. Both were ended abrutly. The MCU was really good with tech for Spider-Man. They were trying to make him different than the last two. Combining both Ultimate and 616 characters to create a really good and more high shcool like Peter Parker. In Ultimate Spider-Man, Gwen Stacy was not a love interest. She was his sister. They did date, but that didn't make much sense to me and felt gross. They were more like siblings and it felt gross. Kitty Pryde is who I would consider his other main love interest. I know it was the weird obbesion that Bendis had with her, but it was done really well. MJ was awful in the Ultimate Comics. She got on my nerves. I also agree that Peter doesn't need to not to have realtionship troubles and money probelms. Peter is smart enough to make enough money and you'd think he'd be experienced enough to keep a stable realtionship. Marvel needs to realize that they need to make him grow up. He should be much older. Marvel is going downhill in movies/TV shows and comics. They need to listen to the fans of both and make it much better. Poor Peter is stuck in a time loop.

I remember how much of a controversy the superior story was. Honestly, I liked the character but not his origin. I would have liked it more if it was something like Otto got a clone body and tried competing with peter like volume 2. I just feel like how otto became superior was just a big punch to the stomach for the spiderman fans. Not only did peter die, he died in a pretty morbid and screwed up way

Didn't Osborn hack those drones and then use them against Ock? Also weren't they a massive invasion of privacy? Because Otto will always be a huge prick even when he's playing hero. The whole point of the ending to "Superior" Spider-Man was showing Otto that Peter is and always will be the true Spider-Man.

I remember reading Dan slotts run when it came out and thinking this is…different. But I didn’t hate it till superior Spider-Man. Now I’m 2023 I look at those storylines as actually incredible when compared to Zeb and I’ve actively been collecting the original Superior Spider-Man run and enjoying the hell out of it!

I feel like at the way marvel is kicking Peter in the balls they should give spiderman his own demon in a bottle type story but not with alcohol I just don’t see Peter becoming an alcoholic I mean he was raised by two people that could give mother Teresa and captain America a run for there money in the Boy Scouts department I was thinking more like he gets his hands on the venom symbiot like Dylan Brock gets injured or wants to take a break from being venom so he temporarily gives it to Peter but not in a malicious way more like the venom symbiot rationalizes it as peter needs to blow off steam Peter becomes venom as to not ruin Spider-Man’s reputation cuz Peter has worn hundreds of spider suits and there are like 30 other spider characters tuning around New York so unless Peter was wearing his red and blues you wouldn’t really be able to tell witch spider person it is and as sort of as an apology to Peter for taking him over the first time they met venom let’s Peter blow off some steam becoming the lethal protector and at some point Peter loses control and mj and black cat have to stop him cuz the venom symbiot acts on your emotions and the way they defeat him is Mary Jane FINALY F$&KNG APOLOGIZES AND EXPLAINS WHY SHE DUMPED PETER SO ABRUPTLY

Maybe the writing regarding Peter's character is more inclined to him not be too materialistic somehow, so he wasn't like business-minded when he should've been and could've been because that can make him even busier, but he can succeed with some spider-stamina lol. Overall, your controversial take makes a valid point that could've been explored better. They could've made him have a business as a consequence from Otto's influence, and maybe even eliminate the money problem with his family in some alternate universe with Mary Jane and Annie or May or Richard (from House of M universe). But these are just my opinions and ideas I'm willing to hand out to some genius writer out there. Hopefully this fanfic could happen hahahah

Overall, I think that Dan Slott had a solid run on ASM. The highs were really high but the lows resulted in some terrible stories.

I liked Dan Slott’s run on Spider-Man and I wanted that to be the MCU Spider-Man but with Andrew Garfield in the role. 13:55 so he is doing this on purpose then, wow he really does have some Peter Pan Syndrome and this is why he is so outdated because there was called Sam Raimi doesn’t understand Spider-Man 2 and I would say why so see for yourself Yes he has made Doc Ock a reminder on why he is a threat which the Avengers did underestimate him in Ends of the earth storyline which some of these Spider-Man villains are Avengers threat level but never are as they should and has anyone seen Mr Rouges video on top 5 villains that shouldn’t be Batman villains?

Though I like the fresh direction of superior spider/man it still isn’t spider/man because it was dr. Octopus. Not Peter Parker. Not Spider-Man and now they are going the opposite direction with sins of Osborn infecting Peter Parker and making him more like the green goblin. Anyway the superior Spider-Man doesn’t answer any questions about Peter Parker and job opportunities or relationship success because it was never Peter. What it did do is now make black cat hate him and once of the things I loved about black cat and Spider-Man is their attraction to each other. Now that is gone and I don’t like it with black cat now hating Peter so much she tried to expose his secret identity on national television.

There is no such thing as forever in comic books. Nothing stays fixed or ruined. Peter's been around for 700+ issues and there have been swaths of crappy art and story sprinkled along that road like nasty little rat turds. It's canon that Spider-Man went on the Ed Sullivan show, which would make him a geriatric. Mary Jane will return as a wife, a superhero, a janitor, an elderly man Peter has to bury, a baby Peter has to raise, Mary Jane Obama, and probably Mary Jane Thanos .

Honestly. I think Peter should start a family but with how Mary Jane has been handled as of late I think Peter should start a family with someone else. Having Peter be a step father to the kids that Mary Jane had with Paul wouldn’t be right. Peter needs a new lover to be with so he can have a family of his own. Mary Jane cheating on Peter is further proof of why choosing Gwen over her was the right choice. (Even if she ended up getting murdered in the end Gwen was at least loyal to Peter)

This why i hate Western comics they don't put permanent couples and turn it into a Hollywood hookup fiasco whose dating who ,then and now........ Rubbish if they always reset and never bother finishing a decent character story arc (then its gonna get Retcon again if they want to reset the universe again! )
