HOW DANGEROUS ARE DISCARDING SABOTS? | Sabot Petal vs BTR-80A | Armour Penetration Simulation

The simulation presents the impact of an Aluminium Alloy sabot petal on the side armour of a BTR-80A at extremely close range.
Discarding sabots are a component of sub-calibre projectiles which fall away upon leaving the barrel. These sabot petals spread out rapidly, with the simulation representing their position at about 10m from the barrel.
The sabot is modelled after 105mm M111 Hetz, with them being simulated as AA7150 (high strength aluminium alloy). It couldn't be determined if 7150 is the exact grade used for the M111 sabot, but it is used for some other 105mm sabots. The BTR-80A thickness and angles were taken from Warthunder as sources vary on the matter. The High Hardness Armour (HHA) had been modelled with a 500BHN hardness.

I can imagine that the petals can go a long way and fan out quite a bit meaning there could be quite the danger zone for friendly infantry (even if the chance of getting hit is slim). Even if they slow down to, say, 50m/s; 700g at that speed is no fucking joke to a mans body lol. And considering the probability of getting hit by the petals as infantry - I imagine autocannons firing fin can be a great threat to friendly infantry, even if the sabots will be far lighter and lose energy quicker

@kireta21
@kireta21 5 месяцев назад
From memory: For 120mm, hazard zone for falling petals starts at 200m and ends at 1000m where it's 140m wide. Muzzle blast is potentially injuring at 200m, with special note reminding to watch out for glass falling from shattered windows, and can impare hearing at 500m. For 25mm hazard zone is 100m long, 17 degree in both sides. Which is no surprise, sabot is about 5cm long, and half of it hollow, I'm guessing to increase air drag
@kireta21
@kireta21 5 месяцев назад
found current range safety regulations (publicly available, don't report me 😀): For 120mm AP sabot, hazard zone for falling petals is 1300m long, for MPAT sabot it's 750m. For 25mm sabot made entirely out of alluminun 400m clearance is required, for new hollow ones with plastic cap only 100m. Quite improvement. Little extra: hazard zone for M829A3 projectile is 30km, zone for ricochet hazard is 2.4km, I assume around target. Targets cannot be placed higher than 5 degree upward, so elevation of gun doesn't exceed 5 + whatever gun needs to elevate to compensate for drop. I guess shooting at full elevation would require over 100km clearance behind target, which does sound like an issue.

@@kireta21 Awesome to get some figures! I do wonder how "seriously" those rules are taken in an actual warzone - like for the 120mm, the likelihood of clocking a friendly soldier with one of three petals spread over a 100 metre wide area has to be really low - like not so low that you'd ignore it in training, but I could see it being ignored during wartime
@kireta21
@kireta21 5 месяцев назад
@@tommeakin1732 in kill-or-be-killed scenario no one expects you to hold back. If accident happens, it happens. After things calm down, it will be handled like any other accidental injury/death. If it's not emergency, you'll be at least expected to warn guys in front of you and give them time to get out of way or into cover. Though generally infantry guys are aware of danger, and can be trusted to stay clear off your muzzle when you're going to need it.

APFSDS do not rotate in the air. They are the main reason NATO tanks have a smooth bore barrel. The fins also impede any angular momentum along that axis of the projectile. Regardless, can we get a simulation of an APFSDS hitting major armour?
