I made wooden surfboards a few years back. One of the nice things about riding a wooden board was that guys would chat me up about the board while sitting in the water - something that didn't always happen otherwise. I had a totally different approach to the build but I liked your technique. So simple with the interior build. My boards always had a vent. I noticed yours don't. No problem with heating the interior and pushing things out of whack? Beautiful work.

anyone who knows anything about the state of the forests knows that making ever more stuff out of wood is also not "sustainable". Foam and glass surfboards are a an ecological disaster for sure. Just like wetsuits and the cars and airplanes people use to get to the innumerable surfs spots. Delusional or greenwash marketing? Both?
@hoangvietho

I think it's much more sustainable to have a surf board out of fossil fuel rather than wood ... fossil fuels are bad when you used them as consummables, if it's long lasting objects it's better since you don't cut down trees
@charliebush2949
@charliebush2949 2 года назад
How long does a tree take to grow compared to how long fossil fuels are made? You can repurposed wood and grow trees and trees are a sustainable material where fossil fuels are not.
@stauffap
@stauffap Год назад
Fossil fuels are a finite resource. So if you want to think ahead and work on the future of the sport, then you really need to think about what kind of material we can use in the future. Wood can be sustainable if you only take as much wood out of a forest then it can regrow. Fossil fuels can never be sustainable. If you think about the disposal of the board, then clearly a wooden board is much easier to get rid of cleanly, since you can just burn it. It just leaves ashes. A compound board is a lot more difficult. Can you burn fiberglass? No, glass doesn't burn. You have to do more to it after it has been burnt. Can you recycle the materials in a normal surfboard? I don't see how, since everything is glued together. I can see carbon fibre and kevlar as at least easy to get rid of (burn), but fiberglass? You'd have to create some special industry to make that at least somewha sustainable, i think. Ideally you'd want to be able to make another board out of the materials of a broken board. That would be nice.
@robertbolding4182
@robertbolding4182 Год назад
A board made of fossil fuels is sequestered carbon for 10,000 years even if inside a landfill. Science vs religion of propaganda.i love wood products just as I love leathers and wool.not because they are organic.
@stauffap
@stauffap Год назад
@@robertbolding4182 That's so little carbon, that it barely matters. That's probably the amount of carbon you're releasing in a day. So congratulations, you've just sequestered the CO2 Emissions of a day in your life - that's really going to make a difference. And what are you talking about religion and propaganda for? What's religion? What's propaganda. Be specific if you want to make accusations.
@rzadigi
@rzadigi Год назад
Half a million surfboards are made every year. Most boards have a lifespan of a few years, some less, some more. They will end up in landfills, unlike these beautiful wood boards that will last for generations.
@CarcPazu
@CarcPazu 2 года назад
His power tools run on good intentions. His wood wasn't cut down my huge hydraulic saws, and transported by gigantic trucks for hundreds of miles. At the end of the day, the problem isn't the surfboard, it's people wanting to surf. That's without counting all the equipment and transportation required to surf. At 3 grand for a board and hundreds of hours of work, this isn't sustainable at all. I hate the "I'm helping saving the planet posturing" of all the hippies trying to justify their unsustainable handmade business model. The only reason he can do what he does is because he's asking for an astronomical price for his work.
@rzadigi
@rzadigi Год назад
The price he asks is extremely reasonable considering the effort and quality. The best surfboards nowadays run about $1500. These are also works of art and will last for many years. But the vast majority of surfers buy boards for $700-800 that are more or less disposable. My brother orders ten new boards every year. Obviously this is far from sustainable with about half a million boards produced every year. Buying a board from Danny would easily pay for itself in a few years, yet would last for generations.

They’re the oldest type of surfboard, the wooden boards are still used by they haven’t been used competitively in forever. It’s all polyurethane and fiberglass for the modern boards now, and because of the speed, size and performance of those boards they will remain the trend and continue improving into the future.
