Darius Khondji is one of the most esteemed cinematographers working today, and the way that he shot Se7en was groundbreaking. His use of darkness and subtle colour has cemented the look of Se7en into one of the most exceptionally looking films of the past 30 years.
In today's video, I look at how Khondji and Fincher use framing to their advantage, how Khondji uses light and colour, as well as the equipment he used to achieve the compelling look.
Apologies for the late upload, I've just been really busy at the moment, but I'm hoping to get another video out for Wednesday.

His use of colour and lighting create a claustrophobic and ominous atmosphere throughout ... you are almost assured early on, that there will be no happy ending here. That, with the constant rain until the end, helped make Se7en a wonderfully disturbing experience. And I agree totally with your take on the use of perspective.

One of the influences for Fincher and Khondji was the photography of Robert Frank.

This was a pretty surface level and 'first year film studies' analysis. The scene at the beginning when the camera dollies in and over the back of the sloth victim; the camera movement is to put us in the perspective of the detectives. The audience is the 3rd person going along with Mills and Somerset. Fincher talks about purposely keeping everything in the dark so you have to look hard and discover the details, like the detectives. You could listen to one of the 4 commentaries on the dvd or watch/read any interview with Fincher or Khondji to explain exactly what they did, how they did it and why they did it. Rather than pedestrian observations like "The characters are at eye level or hip level" - well what does that mean in context? And why was that choice made? Is there significance to the captain sitting comfortably while Somerset chooses to stand? Is this blocking repeated later in the film (yes). Has the relationship changed by that point? Does the cinematography display this change? How?

I'm not really sure what more you expect from a video titled HOW Darius Khondji Shot Se7en that's less than 6 minutes long? I wasn't trying to make an in depth analysis, I was trying to make something new comers to cinematography and filmmaking could watch quickly when they had a chance. Some people don't have 2 hours to spend watching one commentary, I did, and I loved it, but most can't spare that.
