Opta are so amazing, the amount of stats and numbers they deal with is incredible! Stats really add depth to football and working with them crosses over science,technology and maths with the sport and I think that's great! Great video!

That is not completely true. Arsenal scouts used the statistics to find a defender to fit Arsenal. They than narrowed it down to a few candidates. The scouts than went to the games analyzing the players. They than show Wenger what this player has and Wenger and the board and staff decide who would be best.

Stats make people underrate players. Some players, like Busquets and lots of other DM's are under appreciated because stats stats stats. Lots of mids, and players in general are affected by this, but football isn't all stats, if it was, the same teams would be winning every game.

Statistics isn't just about goals scored or dribbles completed. Players like busquets can definitely benefit from statistics and data analysis. For example Busquets is a player who is very good at making interceptions, reading the game, and completing passes. Statistics such as number of successful interceptions, pass completion rates, amount of dangerous passes attempted, and number of assists can be used to prove just how effective of a player Busquets is. Also, further analysing his gameplay can help show areas he needs to improve in and how to prepare for upcoming opponents. Thoroughly analyzing statistics can be beneficial to any player and the increasing use of statistical analysis in football is revolutionizing the game for the better.

Stats are ruining arguments about football, assists and pre assists and goals aren't everything in a player

mrarsenal0123 Stats aren't, people confusing the fact that stats aren't everything in football is. People need to realise that there is more than just a statistical side to football, for instance I had someone saying to me the other day that Oscar had been more influential for Chelsea than Coutinho had for Liverpool and pulled out goals and assist stats. And that's very raw and unguided, especially when you're comparing impacts from midfielders. Coutinho does an excellent job of controlling the tempo of attacks and that's not something that there is a statistic for so I think people need to learn to balance it rather than discard one or the other.

I find it annoying that players are being treated like lab mice and disected of all information like this. I wonder how it affects them mentally that everything they do now is quantified to a decimal point. Football was fine before all this statistical garbage, if a player is truly great you will find it with or without statistics.

I don't think it'll affect them mentally. They play a team sport where the team is the focus. Basketball is the same way, but the best players don't worry about their stats, but the team and how they can work together.
