Correction: Earth-One Wonder Woman was killed by the Ant-Monitor, not Earth-Two. The ending with Zeus was ambiguously worded, the Alex Ross cover has him holding Wonder Woman opposite Earth-One Superman and Supergirl in the same pose so it lent credibility to my interpretation, and multiple Wikis including the DC Wiki listed it as Earth-Two. However, many of you guys politely pointed out the difference in costume design. I thought it was a solid interpretation, but can totally admit when I'm wrong. Plus, this is another great example of Wikis not always being accurate!

One of my favorite alternate takes for Barry Allen's death comes from a trade paperback officially called "Secret Origins of The World's Greatest Super-Heroes" which came out in 1989. In it, while tearing apart the Antimonitor's weapon, He accelerates faster than tachyon particles and eventually arrives at his own origin as the lightning bolt that struck the chemicals giving him his powers. I was given this comic collection as a Christmas gift in the 90s from an older cousin. They are responsible for my current love of comics.

Also Barry Allen didn't keep disintegrating. The early appearances was him running backwards and forwards in time as he destroyed the Anti-Matter canon and died as he did it. It was all one action, one disintegration as he travelled in time. Still didn't stop writers bringing him back.

I still think it's the most bitter irony that the entire point of Crisis was to make the DC universe/continuity simpler and easier to understand. But in the end it has only resulted in making it more complicated than it was before. It also began DC's unhealthy obsession with doing reboots to clean up their continuity, which only made things worse.
@L1701
@L1701 8 месяцев назад
DC’s mentality with reboots is “we want to restart everything while keeping some things from the old canon.” Which causes confusion.
@ExeErdna

@@L1701 Then they just end doing what caused them to reboot in the first place. It hurts at this point to keep seeing it.
@emperormegaman3856
@emperormegaman3856 8 месяцев назад
They need to realise that a reboot does not make the continuity simpler. it just means that now the reader has to go through the trouble of diferenciating between "that's pre-[reboot x] continuity" "that's currently canon" "it was canon during [reboot x], was retconed in [reboot y] but they reinstated it in [reboot z²+2x].
@marvelfannumber1
@marvelfannumber1 8 месяцев назад
@@emperormegaman3856 Exactly, this is what I have to do constantly whenever I try to get my friends to get into DC, it's frustrating. Far from making things more simple, it actually does the opposite, it makes it way more complicated and threatening to newcomers. Say what you want about Marvel's floating timeline shenanigans, but I'd take all the wacky stuff that comes from that over the constant resets DC insist on doing.

Happy for the nod to Arrowverse's take on COIE. It may have been victim to the ever tightening purse strings of CW, but it did honor the spirit of the comic with so many great cameos and nods to all of live action DC, even the old DCEU with ErzaFlash, who got his hero name from GustinFlash. Also love the Marv Wolfman cameo, that was endearing. Plus they did really good build up to the event, all the way from the first episode of Flash. Still love the S08Ep01 Arrow episode that ended with the wall of white erasing the Arrowverse Earth 2. Great vid!

21:26 I’ve read it, and it’s a nice comic. However, a few changes I would make is to make sure that Wonder Woman’s pre-Crisis history would retain post-Crisis (so that Donna Troy’s history won’t get screwed over), Power Girl keep her Kryptonian origins (and have her be found by the Earth-One/New Earth Superman and join the JSA) and Supergirl’s history be kept (without Superman’s history being screwed over), Superman’s Superboy history be kept (without the Legion continuity being screwed over), Batman’s pre-Crisis roots be kept (because I like a Batman who is fun, witty, understanding, and compassionate alongside his appearance as a dark and mysterious character), and the Golden and Silver Age Hawks coexist on the same earth (with Hawkworld either be set early in the Silver Age Hawks’ careers or be an Elseworlds story) just to make sense of it all. Before the post-Crisis version of the first Crisis, all the Golden Age superheroes would be active from 1938 to the early 1950s, with Captain Marvel (and all the Fawcett heroes) being active from 1939 to their disappearance in 1953, the JSA being active from 1940 to 1951, the Seven Soldiers being active from 1941 to their disappearance in 1948, the Freedom Fighters being active from 1941 to 1956, and the All-Star Squadron being active from 1941 to around 1945. The Silver Age superheroes would make their debut starting with the coming of Superman in 1968 (since Superman was born in Krypton in 1945 before he arrived on Earth in 1948 and made his debut as Superboy in 1956 (the year that the Silver Age started publication), Wonder Woman in 1967, Arthur Curry Aquaman in 1969, Batman in 1970, Barry Allen Flash in 1973, Hal Jordan Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter (even though he arrived in 1955) in 1975, Green Arrow in 1971 (with his Golden Age adventures happening via time travel from 1941 to 1948 with Roy Harper Speedy), Silver Age Hawkman and Hawkwoman and Ray Palmer Atom in 1977, and Dinah Laurel Lance Black Canary in 1979. The JLA would form in 1975 and would meet and team up with the JSA (who came out of retirement the first time in 1963 before they retired in 1968) in 1978, Flash of Two Worlds would happen in 1977 (after Keystone City was in suspended animation on the night that Barry Allen became the second Flash in 1973), the Charleston Comics heroes would be active since the arrival of Captain Atom in 1975, Kara Zor-El would arrive on Earth from Argo City in 1975, the Teen Titans would form in 1978 before becoming the New Teen Titans in 1983, Infinity Inc and the Outsiders would form in 1983, the Fawcett heroes would return from suspended animation in 1980, and the Freedom Fighters would reform since 1981. By the time of the first Crisis in 1985, all the heroes and villains had worked together to defeat the Anti-Monitor, resulting in the death of Supergirl, Barry Allen Flash, and many others. That is what I should do for the post-crisis timeline before the first Crisis.

The one that died was Earth-One Wonder Woman whose body went back in time, reverting back into clay and spreading throughout Themyscira with the implication that it was the Earth-One's clay body that George Perez' Wonder Woman was eventually made from. This was revealed in the epilogue of Crisis on Infinite Earths #12.

I think though he was unfair. There are good reasons why fans today dislike the gender/race swapping and the reasons are usually terrible. The female Wildcat didn't exactly last so long that the original replaced her soon enough. Suggesting fan reactions to her replacing the original were broadly the same feelings as today. Same when it happened with Ben Reilly in the clone saga, Az-Bats in Knightfall saga, USagent for Captain America and so on.

Yeah, hate to pile on but it was indeed earth 1 Wonder Woman who bit it. It was what cleared the way for the Perez reboot and why post crisis Wonder Woman came along way after Byrne’s Superman Reboot and Miller’s Year One Batman story wise. She was literally returned to the clay of Paradise Island for her story to begin again. It’s why she’s not a founding member of the Justice League Post Crisis. Fun Fact 1: The way Kara died was crafted to finally answer the question on who was more powerful, Superman or Supergirl. And the answer was that Kara was more powerful. Fact 2: Kara didn’t die. In an in canon Christmas Special, Deadman is confronted by a blonde woman who can see him. She tells him that they (heroes) don’t save people for the glory, it’s because it’s the right thing to do. He asks her name, and she says it’s Kara, but that wouldn’t mean much to him. Apparently there was an entire fight about this in DC editorial. But, Kara did live. Just forgotten.

I read this for the 1st time 20-30 years after it was published, and I still think it's one of the few reboot events in comics that is good and earned. Not only is it written well and actually has real stakes and actual consequences (before half of those were then retconned), but it's the only one that wasn't made to compensate for bad decisions and used as a proverbial get out of jail free card. As the convoluted continuity of the DC universe at that point was a result of the birth of the super hero comic industry and with writers who could have never known what it would turn into. And no reason for audiences to be paying attention or even a way to keep up with everything. Half of their history was just to sell each issue at the time to random people. It wasn't bad planning, it was just the nature of the industry then. So this made sense to fix everything up and felt like it was inspired by passion to streamline and improve the status quo rather than exploitative. Since then publishers had the ability for forethought to not put themselves back in this predicament and knew readers were paying attention, but couldn't help themselves and added so much unnecessary trash to the timeline. Especially interesting learning they were against the idea in this one to have things that can be retconned, when now it just feels like everything is written knowing it can be undone later. I stopped reading Superhero comics because of these universe events, as they would always punish my dedication to specific storylines or writers by forcing a marketable huge status quo change seemingly constantly; but also not ever having lasting consequences.

As someone who got into comics around the time to Rebirth, I loce Crisis as a story, but not its long-term impact. In the long run, the continuity it intended to streamline only got more convoluted. And we now live in era where it seems like there’s always some major crossover happening. I just want to settle in without the status quo being reshuffled, every six months or a year, and having to decide if I’m going to pay extra to follow event

When Superman was rebooted in John Byrne’s “Man of Steel”, it was established that he was never Superboy. And since Superboy was a big part of Legion history at that time, it caused problems. The story “The Greatest Hero of Them All” tried to fix it by establishing the Superboy that the Legion teamed up with was from a “pocket dimension”. Those stories came out years before Zero Hour.
