How DC Ruined Their New Superman in 9 Months

DC Comics introduced Jon Kent as the new Superman less than a year ago. And they've already ruined the character and any future he had. Jon Kent may be Superman but he isn't even the star of his own comic book, Superman: Son of Kal-El. DC Comics also forgot to let the new Superman do anything heroic. They ruined the new Superman when they put Tom Taylor on the book. Tom Taylor has never written a quality ongoing comic series. The only thing he does well is elseworld stories. Instead of exciting Superman stories. DC Comics and Tom Taylor are saddling their new Superman with stories about his first gay kiss, coming out to his mom, fighting global warming and illegal immigration. All concerns in the real-world, but nobody reads comics for real-world events. They read for escapism and heroism. DC Comics ruined Jon Kent Superman by not featuring him as an actual hero for the first year of Superman: Son of Kal-El.

Remember when Patrick Gleason & Tomasi completely revitalized Superman and his entire family by introducing him as being to married to Lois with Jon Kent as their young, infant, impressionable, LITERAL Superboy? When his first interactions with Damian Wayne (and Batman & Superman as a whole as fathers) were grounds for some great f*c%in stories? The introduction of the SUPER SONS??? (By none other than Alfred btw) Yea… good times

You are correct. Far left SJW activists like Taylor hold the narcissistic belief that they are completely in the right regardless of evidence to the contrary. A better way to tell Jon Kent as Superman is to keep Clark around. Clark, for some reason, loses his powers. Clark encourages Jon to take over the Superman mantle. Clark, through Kryptonian technology, can see & hear everything on Jon's missions. Kryptonian technology is what makes it possible for Clark to join in Jon's battles with whatever adversary he's up against. But Jon has a different take on what it mean's to be Superman. And this creates conflict between Clark & Jon. You can have the best of both worlds by keeping Clark in Jon's life.

Jon had so much potential to be good character if DC got someone who understood Jon Kent and Superman family dynamic. Here's the writing problem with LGTBQ+ over every other type of diversity: you can't see it just by looking at someone, you have to show it either by talking about it or showing the physicality of it. A black character like John Stewart, no matter what he does, is obviously a Black guy. He doesn't need to say anything about it; the artists can have him literally do anything and it's a black man doing it, which is obvious to the audience. But with LGTBQ+, the only way to know is to show: they have to talk about it and express it physically for anyone to really know. This is one of the reasons LGTBQ+ characters can tank so fast: if a writer takes time out of EVERY ISSUE to remind the audience, "hey people, this guy is GAY, and this issue, we're showing that by going to the gay club/coming out to his parents/kissing his new boyfriend/etc." then it's the focus of the comic is being an LGTBQ story with a superhero backdrop instead of a super hero story where the character is LGTBQ+. Seriously, just got back to any comic 40 years ago and swap the dialogue: does any character have to walk in and continually announce how straight they are, show off their straight significant other, insist on checking out the straight club to meet straight people, and march in parades celebrating straightness? You might get a scene with Superman bragging about something Lois did or Ralph Dibney enjoying the married life, but for the most part, relationships were understated and not the focus of the books. That gets completely flipped with LGTBQ+ characters, because the writers have to constantly remind the readers about their sexuality since it can't just be 'seen' by looking at them.

@ohnosmoarlulcatz
@ohnosmoarlulcatz 2 года назад
It's made worse by the fact that they're also bending people who traditionally aren't LGTBQ+ characters into one. Iceman is probably the most famous examples. His scene of coming out to his parents in X2 catapulted his character into the spotlight for that community. So when Marvel did their reboot a few years ago, they suddenly changed his orientation from straight to gay.
@kev7161
@kev7161 2 года назад
Except if they don't say, "hey I'm gay" or are not shown seen kissing or holding hands or waking up in bed next to someone of their own sex, everyone will assume they are straight. I see many, MANY instances in a comic with interactions between a male and female couple. Clark and Lois are a prime example. They're snuggling in bed together having pillow talk when Clark hears trouble far away and flies off to save the day. They exchange "I love you" comments at the drop of a hat. Peter and Mary Jane are the same. Diana and Steve (well on and off again), etc. There are a ton of assumed straight characters until they are revealed not to be. This past decade especially has seen the comic book world try to diversify and give us plenty of female characters and more characters of color and more LGBTQ characters. Sometimes it has been really heavy handed (The X-Men comics come to mind), but I like that the attempt is made to make comics accessible to all sorts of readers, not just aging white men of days gone by.
@kev7161
@kev7161 2 года назад
@@ohnosmoarlulcatz There are a lot of men and women out there who live a so-called "straight" life until they realize that they are simply hiding who they truly are and decide to live their true lives. A friend of mine's father came out in his sixties after raising a family and living the traditional straight man life. Sure, Bobby Drake coming out seemed sudden and rushed but that is comics where they only have a certain amount of pages to tell a story.

If I had chosen the creative team, I would love to have seen (and this might be an oddball pick) Robert Venditti as the writer and Dexter Soy as the artist. I think these two could have had a Jon Kent Superman run that would have been goated for years. If only...

This, THIS is what ended it for me. what they did to Jon is officially what ended my love for comics. I stopped buying about 2-3 years ago, but I still kept up here and there through pirating. Jon was the character that gave me hope for the future of comics back during the tomasi run on superman and the Supersons story. But after what they've done to him, absolutely butchering his character, I'm done. Packing up the boxes of comics, figures, etc and selling it all- done. I just can't do it anymore

I'm totally fine with Jon Kent being bi or even homosexual. All love is good as long as it's between consenting adults. But that part of the character's life should never be the sole focus, especially if we're talking superheroes. Superhero comics are like wrestling. You have to get people invested in the character and the stories surrounding them. You have to get the character over so that the fans have a reason to keep coming back. And it's totally fine to talk about the issues that affect us in the real world, that's something which goes all the way back to the origins of comics in the 1930s, but you have to give the reader a reason why they should care. Give the main protagonist a reason to be passionate about the topic at hand. Make it something which affects them at a personal level. I may not be a professional writer, yet, but even I know this about comics because I'm a reader, and sometimes I wonder if people like Tom Taylor read comics because they seem to have a huge disconnect with what makes comics so loved by people.

I think the one thing that holds Jon’s story back is Clark not being around. My favorite parts of Rebirth were when Clark was mentoring Jon. I truly believe he can have an amazing story. Just think if they tapped into Jon being isolated for 5 years on Earth-3 with Ultraman? What a great villain that would be. It could also represent him defeating his own mentality of being in his fathers shadow. One big gripe I have so far is the villains. Like, Bendix is so uninteresting.

The earth 3 crap ruins him, the ish is darker then any of the Batfam origins and I don't want John being all agnsty or damaged. Also yeah watching Johnathan learn and grow into his powers was fantastic in supersons and rebirth, now Tom Taylor just has John as another fully powered Kryptonian with barley any limits and mastery over all his powers. When & How? Was it in that same issue that doesn't exist where John decided to change his costume and name from Superboy to Superman, Force Development and Forced Narrative.

Imagine if Clark had actually tried to get his son back. What a dilemma that could be. How do you break into another universe? How far are you willing to go to save your family? Imagine if Clark broke out Superboy Prime to help him- or even had to consider the option of doing so. Man, what a story that would be.

Jon really needed some big dynamic action stories to "prove" himself to readers. This slow drama take would have been ok if Jon was already a hit as Superman.....but this is his first solo book! He needs to build his feats, his social circle, his own enemies, and possibly his own crises that differentiate him from his father....fine Bendix is a fair choice for villain but....people are bored of this comic. Dynamic things need to happen, with quicker pacing.

Agreed, I was so hopeful about them finally doing a Superboy character right. He and Damien Wayne seemed like the prefect Superboy to eventually become the next superman and Robin finally done right to become the next Batman, but then the just ruined superboy completely. Didn't need to age him up, didn't need to make him gay, it's all just virtue signaling and publicity for the sake of virtue signaling.

My problem is that John‘s character is barely 6 years old and they’ve done nothing but give him restrictions. He don’t really have a secret identity, he couldn’t join the Titans. They couldn’t even keep him at the same age for more than a year. And already he’s Superman That’s so happens to be gay. If he’d grew up with Damien Wayne and 10 years down the line that would’ve been more acceptable. but I don’t think DC had that amount of time

When I heard he was aged up, I lost interest as I would’ve been happy if Conner Kent was the older Superboy, but I didn’t know about his run as Superman till watching Thinking Critical’s response on Jon Kent Superman…What have they done with my boy? I would’ve prefer this coming to age story when he’s younger as when I think of Superman where Jon’s hormones are having him questioning his identity and seeing his dad not as super when it comes to non violent human problems and try to do a Marvel’s Champions story.

Let's not overlook the more recent intent to race swap Clark Kent! I thought earlier ideas of doing this was already abandoned, but I couldn't be more wrong! This is conceivably more despicable than when Slott had Peter Parker's body taken over by Doc Ock, or just as bad in a different way. This is NOT how you attain race equality. The face of Superman/Clark Kent has been the same for more than 83 years. You want to completely blank out over 3/4 of a century of character history! While you're at it, go ahead and target some of the long-standing popular novels like Moby Dick. I'm sure Captain Ahab doesn't mind having his race changed to appease the masses. You want to erase every White character is history as your ultimate goal? It always starts slow, then ramps up to the ridiculous! Bias actions are just that, no matter who you target. Every White person is NOT racist, just as every other race is NOT absent their share of racists among them! These types of agendas only serve to widen the gap in race relations.

Damian Wayne stayed a kid for a long time in real-world years and so seeing him grow up a bit now and even have his own solo title is so satisfying. Jon, on the other hand, I can't try to be happy for even if he is the logical successor to the Superman identity (being Kal-El's son), simply because I never got to see him truly grow. A lot of people like to point out that making Jon come out was a mistake. To me, the real mistake was aging him up too soon.

The stupid part is that this would be ripe grounds for content. Jonathan Kent has concerns that are more small picture like global warming or mass migration. However, instead of acting like a *human* activist, he could have used his insane powers to actually do something about this. He could have used his super breath to refreeze parts of the arctic to protect coastal communities. He could have had one of the countless inventors create a device to remove garbage from the atmosphere and taken a couple laps around the planet. He could have delivered supplies to vulnerable regions or used his powers to help them plant acres of crops in mere minutes. He could have busted the cartels and warlords keeping these people oppressed, giving them the stability to improve their homes and live in relative peace. He could have flown out into space to track down elusive materials that could help drive clean energy development. He would have naturally come into conflict with Clark over going too far because Clark never wanted to interfere with humans. Jonathan could have hit back with "But part of me *is* human! I have the power to make things better for the planet! I have the power to take down assholes nobody else cares about! Why shouldn't I do my part to make this world a better place?!" His boyfriend could have still been around and helped ground him without his love life becoming an unnecessary core part of the story. The likes of Bruce or Diana could have given him some advice about the dangers of spreading himself too thin or making people too dependent lest they never learn to help themselves. His activities could have inspired other heroes with the power to do some good in the world. I often wonder why Arthur or Kaldur have never used their powers to belch every scrap of plastic in the ocean up onto the beaches of the surface world and demanded people clean up after themselves. The likes of Lex Luthor could come into play, offering near-limitless supplies and support in exchange for sponsoring Jonathan's growing movement. Jonathan would know he is being used and that this is Lex taking a shot at Clark, but might not care if it this bargain will give him the tools to serve the greater good. This would have been a more human story about a son trying his damnedest to be what the world expects him to be. Jonathan Kent doesn't need to fly around punching evil people in the face or lifting impossibly heavy object, but he needs to be doing things that only a Superman could do. As we got him, he could have been any random kid who had tunnel-vision over his own problems and identity. Whew. Did not plan on that tirade.

Jordan Peterson (controversial figure...I know) responded to an audience member on an Australian talk show. I think he essentially noted that A lot of social activism is done by people who "don't have their own house in order". In other words, activism displaces the time and hard work it takes to become a competent, productive member within your family and community, where you can have the most effect. Work on yourself first; become knowledgeable about how the World actually works, and practice problem solving on a familial and community level. So when you do become active on a macro level, you can back up what and how you want change, and have the capability to contribute to that change. Clark grew up learning to farm, he went to journalism school, and traveled the World. In many iterations, he spent time with at the Fortress learning wisdom from the "known galaxies" through Jor-El's holo. All before donning the cape. Jon was learning things up to a pre- teen child's developmental stage, and then magically aged up to a young adult for no other purpose it seems, then to allow for a romantic relationship and having a comparable silhouette to his father in action scenes. He's essentially Shazam without the wisdom of Solomon. And that, I imagine, is a big reason for why this endeavor has not worked.

I've been reading this Superman book since issue 1. It has its up and down. Very agenda suggestive. If you read his future state stuff he's little more superman but still has some ways to go. This book is foundation of him becoming a real superhero. Just because he's superman doesn't mean he's superman. He has a lot to learn and Clark didn't train him like Batman did with the Robins. So he's going to be very noobish but he's going to try his hardest to make it work. Also I foresaw Jay being either gay or villain when I 1st saw him in #2. So now we're going to see Jon have his 1st heart break too in the coming issues. Lastly Jon saves people in almost every issue.
