A subsoiler is designed to shatter soil the problem I always found in north east Arkansas in the 70's and 80's was getting the soil to the right moisture content to shatter.. we used V-Rippers my best attempt was with using a mold board plow on wheat stubble in june.. our ground gets so dry and hard its like concrete Sandy loam

The reason for design of the V--ripper was that the center shank required the most horsepower to pull..the shanks that were recessed to the sides and behind would compress shatter latterly. Requiring less horsepower per shank....but if moisture is too high in the soil the shanks actually compress and increase the density of the soil...kinda like making mud pies

soil physicis is a highly reguarded professional in a region of the Country where sod lost could mean no sod for a decade. The dust belt of the USA could occur if not with the right professionals.

Thanks for sharing. This is the first time I've heard a soil physicist talk.

Hi, Lori. I think most people are just trying to be courteous and helpful when someone stops them in the hallway and asks them a question. I am not necessarily a very sociable person, but I do make time to talk with everyone who comes up to me with a question. I always appreciate the many people who take the time to answer my questions or point me to others who might be able to help me. I certainly would not have gone from a first generation college student to being a professor without others deciding to give me some time and answer my questions. Thanks for your comment. Aaron.

@@aarondaigh5729 Digging deep will not make compaction worse.

@@lorineidtinytoadplot744 Actually it does and it just makes the compaction deeper. Want proof? Go find a washout.
