How Def Jam Lost Control of Hip Hop

For almost two decades, hip-hop’s birthplace housed a label that served as its unbridled market leader. Born 35 years ago in a cramped dorm room at NYU, Def Jam became the perennial force in a culture that had previously lacked a governing entity. Helmed by Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons, But in the year 2019, it’s undeniable that the company which runs out of 1755 Broadway has been cajoled into to sharing its perch at the top of the hip-hop ladder.

@@souravsingh539 dude, AGAIN Warren G gave them a much needed cash infusion. What "saved" Def Jam was that Polygram bought a 50% stake in the company which allowed them to distribute and clear samples for Warren G's album which then was hugely successful. With the artists Def Jam had on its roster, there was going to be a company willing to buy a stake in it and help them with their money issues. They had a ridiculous roster in the early 90s despite their financial problems.

I grew up and also, born and raised with the music of Def Jam with the likes of LL Cool J, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Oran "Juice" Jones, Alyson Williams, Slick Rick, 3rd Bass, EPMD, Redman, Onyx, Domino, Warren G, Flatlinerz, South Central Cartel, Nice & Smooth, B.G. Knockout & Dresta and Method Man as a solo artist outside of the Wu-Tang Clan empire. I remember the short-lived Def Jam acts like Boss, Downtown Science, Nikki D and The Fam-Lee by heart. I come from the Russell Simmons & Rick Rubin era. Nowadays, Def Jam ain't the same since 2008-09. I don't have no words to say about that label in the future because of lacking. By the way, Run-DMC wasn't signed to Def Jam, they were signed to Profile Records. When Run-DMC put out their 2nd movie Tougher Than Leather in 1988, Russell tried to get the guys out of their contract with Profile post-Krush Groove. That movie was the WORSE movie Run-DMC put out. Beastie Boys and Slick Rick were the guest appearances for TTL, but the Beastie Boys already left Def Jam after a bitter fallout with Russell or Rick. As for Russell Simmons, he's changed. So, I have nothing to say about Def Jam's recent future.

@Eric Stewart, Coming up from Day-1 in hip-hop myself, and still have all the classic Def Jam joints. And, it was Russell that had the fallout with the Beastie Boys. It's was a money issue which was f#(ked up! Being that it was the Beastie Boys who created the first rap album to go no.1. with over 10 million albums sold. And helped give the most important label of hip-hop (Def Jam) the foundation to become just that from the revenue in album sales. Not to mention Ad-Rock being the one to discover LL Cool J, telling Rick to listen to him. Which between LL & BB, together got Def Jam a distribution deal with Columbia Records. Just Saying...

Def Jam is suffering like most other music companies that it's just not as profitable like before and it's like musical chairs who will eat. It's slim pickings to make money in music nowadays. Def Jam should be big enough to diversify and find other revenue streams. Record labels will not make that type of money like in the past. Pirating starting in the late 90s was the first blow then social media and video platforms made it a level playing field for independent artists.

Great comment. I agree Def Jam to to look at over areas to maintain whatever relevance they have. They have to be real creative now. However, I imagine their back catalogue will always provide a revenue stream

This was a good video I honestly believe that most major labels don't have the leverage that they used to. Attracting artists used to be easy because record labels were gate keepers and had the resources that artists needed to become popular. That's no longer true. Social media and direct streaming platforms can help artists cut out the middle man and control their own sound while staying directly engaged with their fans. Record labels used to stay rich as long as great artists kept dropping hit album's and singles. Now, most artists don't have the talent to release consistent quality work. The old days are over. Independent labels and one hit wonders are the wave now.

What was briefly mentioned was Russell Simmons departure from Def Jam which in my opinion is when the label started to decline. Russell's combined poster boy image and being in the trenches of hip hop culture is what made Def Jam sale. Remember Phat farm, Baby Phat, Sean Jean(I know I know not part of phat farm) that energy made Def Jam the place to be. All the records was not good but the synergy of culture fashion a deep roster made them a premiere label. Once Russell left it changed, they had to sell phat farm and baby phat and the Lyor took over and Rick left. BTW what did Rick do with Linkin Park I know something's have too change but in hind sight the dismantling of DEF JAM and reconstruction was not a good move.
@216Numbskull
@216Numbskull 4 года назад
@Michael Watkins, Yo B.! I will say that Russell had a big impact on hip-hop in general. He's one of the main figures in making the culture,music,fashion,etc... in hip-hop as successful as it is. Just a few things on what you said I'd like to redress? Rick left Def Jam in 1988 after conflict with Lyor who became president of Def Jam in 1988. Russell didn't step down from Def Jam completely until 30 years later in (2017). The main reason for his own decline (and not Def Jam) is separating himself and stepping down from all of his companies due to rape and sexual assault accusations and charges. I'm not quite sure in what you mean as to Def Jam declining? They have always had a solid core of artists. Even now they rep Big Sean,Jadakiss,Kanye West,Logic,Nas,Pusha T,Redman,Rihanna,Method Man,Jay Z.etc..Just Saying!

Plus, back then New York had that god complex about hip hop and wouldn't actually find skilled talent outside of NYC until it was too late... And NO LIMIT, E40, Rap A Lot, Suave House, and Texas Rappers showed Everyone how to Gain as an Independent... learning the business and utilizing local and close regional sources. Def Jam had a great run - the first at so much - they are the Motown of hip hop - it was exactly what was needed at the time. - Now - I noticed that you started your essay from the time of DMX - He came years after the fact - Def Jam starts with LL Cool Jay (1984) but it goes back as far as Kurtis Blow (1981) - Scott La Rock (1984) - DMX didn't come out until the late 90's - when Hip Hop was already dead.
