I like how he says Vancouvers calling him Gretzky when John Shannon was the one who said it and all canucks fans laughed at it. dont make us look like leaf fans were arent that bad lol
Well I sort of understand Aho the most. Still he was an absolute steal by Carolina. But how did Datsyuk end up to be a seventh rounder. That guy was a god
Actually, the Gretzky comparison comes from Gretzky himself stating that he sees himself in Elias. As for his teammates, they call him "Alien" because he is beyond superhuman in their eyes.
Pettersson wasn't being compared to Gretzky in Vancouver originally he was actually being compared to Forsberg(once he fills out more) or Datsyuk, it wasn't until someone from Sportsnet I believe said something about him being compared to Gretzky. Then supposedly Gretzky himself came out and said he saw a lot of resemblance of Pettersson in himself, but it wasn't Vancouver who started this.
The NHL will see the return of Vancouver in playoff contention in the very near future. Pettersson, Boeser, Horvat, Goldobin and Hughes omg that is frightening!
When you look of these "new" players of the Game, you relize its a new breed! They play the game in a different way. In 3-4 years from now they will be the new Norm! Eichel , Pettersson and Hischier is names we going to hear a lot!
The comparison of Petterson to Gretzky in Vancouver is more of a hyperbolic internet meme than anything. Very few people are saying it with seriousness.
@Carleton Rutherford , I took his comments to mean they were the same "type" of player. Slight build, whispy, whatever. I also live in Vancouver and nobody I know is calling him Gretzky.
Canucks had Pettersson #1 no matter where they were selecting. He was their guy. Crazy how eastern media knows so little about the Canucks lol I mean they even flew him out here before the draft...
the whole media, especially the eastern Toronto Media covering the draft laughed at the Canucks for drafting Pettersson at #5 and kept mentioning how they should have traded down. Just goes to show that you can't always judge 18 year old prospects, and need at least 5 years to determine their career trajectory.
I'm a Canucks fan and do draft predictions, and I was thinking Pettersson was more likely a 10-12 pick: I figured the team would go for Glass or Makar. Pettersson was a surprise, but a pleasant one!
Teams that needs defenders picks them. Teams looking for a center picks centers etc. Team doesn't necessarily take the best player but the player that is the most suitable for them and fits their needs.
This is the primal importance of an NHL franchise executing the right scouting and drafting of their future team. After years of abysmal drafting through the Nonis and Gillis years I think Benning has absolutely proven he can handle himself on draft day with the best of them. Virtanen (still optimistic here, long-term), Boeser, Pettersson, Hughes is a nice little run 4 out of 5 (obviously Juolevi looks like a dropped ball at this point). Benning has overspent on useless free-agents but none of these mistakes have altered the trajectory of the organization, he's still building the team through solid drafting and development. In Benning I trust. -A jaded lifelong heartbroken-many-times Canuck fan
Elliotte can you please do one of your 31 thoughts about Max Pacioretty and the trade market? Was the trade market depressed because some teams think he is past his prime, or is the consensus around the NHL that he is still the same player he used to be? Because when I watch him he doesn't look as fast as he used to be and he seems to only be an average player for Vegas now same as he was for Montreal last year when he only scored 17. He seems past his prime but I'm curious what scouts around the league think.
16, yes. But that was a travesty in itself. Most prospect gurus I was reading that year had him in top 10 and were shocked to see him keep dropping. I have heard that sometimes, when a player falls a little bit, other teams start wondering why he's falling and they let him slip, too. With Barzal I figure it had something to do with his size? But he was *always* a stud.
@@sojiroseta98 I mean we've had 3 players compete and win the Calder 3 years in a row Boeser 2nd Pettersson 1st And Quinn Hughes is 1st at the moment in the race :)
@@phlohmoh6725 right but good scouting is finding gems outside of the 1st round lol, it seems obvious that every team has a higher % chance to get a good player in the 1st round (even tho some teams keep blowing it), Tampas players were found all over the place including their current best player, but dont think im dissing the canucks, they're good at scouting too its just Tampa's been better in the last decade
Gabe Vilardi was projected to go 5th after Makar, everything between 6th and 15 wasnt certain depending on what the teams needed. Elias hadnt proven himself in the top Swedish league at this point either only playing in the 2nd league with J.Dahlén wich probably was a factor to why Vancouver drafted him, it wasnt until months after the draft when he was dominating the best league in Sweden that people realized what a steal it was.
Pattersson is a great player but dont compair him to a big name right at the start, those are big shoes to fill. Just watch and enjoy this rookie who will be a star player
@@sojiroseta98 I think he is back on the bandwagon probably asked to get a Pettersson Jersey for Christmas lol. I tried explaining to him after the draft that it was a good pick because we need skill to replace the Sedins. He wouldn't listen oh were gonna be the softest team in the league I'm so done we need big Canadians our gm is clueless.
Gretzky comparisons, people need to ease the hype here. Even with Matthews, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen young players or players in general have tremendous starts. It just so happens these guys play in Canada
Are you kidding me lots of people fans lost there mind's when Canucks drafted Pettersson, they wanted Nolan Patrick, sure happy they picked Pettersson 2019 NHL rookie of the Year
Yes I know they were different draft years but they are both rookies this year and competing for the Calder....everyone had Dahlin as the hands down favorite to win it and then comes Elias to smoke him out of that convo in just 4 games......Pettersson looks like he should be the #1 pick in any year right now....
What do you mean he “fell to #5”?? He was predicted to go 13-15 with a team that just missed the Playoffs. Everybody scoffed at the Canucks when they selected Petey.
Like I said , my only issue with Peterson is his durability over 82 games and playoffs if Canucks ever make it, plus playing in a big Western Conference, injuries will be my only concern.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Rangers had him at number 1. They tend to go slightly off-board with their rankings (i.e. Kravtsov as the second best forward in 2018 behind Svechnikov) and I know they were extremely disappointed not to get him at #6, where they went with Lias Andersson.
I can see the physical comparison with the greatest scorer in NHL history. But I see Elias as a Tatar or Larkin more than anyone else. Not that it’s bad, I just don’t think he’s a superstar with less than 5 games played. I understand the excitement, we have it too in Toronto. Okay that’s really a bad example because Auston Matthews set a NHL record debut and franchise record season ... but it’s still exciting times for the Vancouver fans. Hope he wins the Calder 🙂👍
This isn't just about his NHL games, EP has star pedigree. For the past two years he has outperformed every Swedish U20 forward whos has ever played, including 9 guys with 100+ point seasons. He probably won't just become som run of the mill top 6 forward like Larkin or Tatar; the comparison is an insult.
Should've been 1st overall in this draft. Well done Jim Benning for getting a generational player. He will be as good as Austin Matthews and Connor McDavid.
Drives me nuts when it's the "let's look back at the draft" everyone has a crystal ball after the fact. Pettersson has had 2 good games in the NHL and now they're talking about why he wasnt taken 1st overall lol. Why were guys like zetterberg and datsyuk taken in the last rounds?? Come on guys. Look at any draft year 5 years ago or earlier and you will find TONS of players drafted later, that have been way better then players drafted high in the first round...
poop because their was a chance. All people in the top 10 are considered for first. Obviously Pavel Bure couldn’t go first but Peterson easily could have.
He now has 10 good games. Youngest player in nhl history to score 10 goals in first 10 games. Tied for most points ever in first 10 games (16pts). Crazy good.
Petterson’s size what him drop. I remember when Erik karlsson was drafted the best Defenceman in the draft but he drop cause of his size. Boom the next franchise. Them damn Canucks were ahead of him that year too... Cody who???....
@JT Nelson Yes he is a good prospect, but also the most overhyped prospect in the league. He plays on the third line because he's not good enough to play in the top six. His production the past two seasons in both the USHL and the NCAA were nothing special. Many picked him for Calder (which is hilarious to me) and lots have said he's on par or even better than Elias Pettersson...to me Pettersson is better and it's not even particulary close. And please don't come at me with the World Juniors or the "5 points in 6 NHL games" arguments. Those are small sample sizes that should not be weighted heavily when evaluating prospects.
The season just started and they're already calling him Gretzky. Good young top 6 centers are considered more valuable. And Colorado and Dallas needed defense. If Patrick was available Vancouver would've picked him.
@@zachmontminy I'm curious if you've watched the canucks games this year. I thought the hype was crazy but watching him is unreal. His iq is something else
It is not the goals or the assists that makes these people so exited about Pettersson it is his hockey IQ he just outsmarts his opponents because of that but i agree that the Gretzky comparisons is not fair but i am sure that Pettersson will be the best player from that draft by far
Elliott Friedman, I used to like your takes, but your dislike of the Canucks shines through way too clearly. Nobody in Vancouver compared him to winey Wayney. That was your buddy Shannon. But I will say I believe him to be the best player they have ever drafted. The player we have waited for, for decades. Players like Sakic were never interested in coming here to play, so win games or lose this season, I don't care. We finally have a star centerman.
Hischier is a fantastic player but i think Pettersson was the best pick of the 2017 draft. Patrick is looking like a bust. Heiskenen looks solid though.
How in the world is Matthews worth 12 million dollars for eight years? He has a history of injury problems and he has never cracked 70 points. Toronto will be making a huge mistake if they over pay him by that much.
Well Mathews & Laine are the new version of Tavares & Ovechkin so it makes sense that both would get the 1 & 2 spots respectively but I would have taken Petterson guarantee third overall no doubt
I really don't see Pettersson being better than Hischier. However I will enjoy watching the rivalry from the fan bases bickering over whose the best from that draft lol.
Little did you know mathews is only worth 10 mil, and Toronto will just watse more cap, for overpaying him... he may of had a great start to the 18/19 season, but come on now, he ain't worth that much, unless i see a 45 or more goals a sesson! With 85+ pts...
