I discovered this channel a couple of weeks ago. Kakuro and Strimko are math puzzles I love to do. I do sudoku here and there. These are ones that I would normally not try because they would be too hard and would take me days. This one took me one hour. The hints you gave allowed me to finish the puzzle on my own. This is a wonderful channel and I will be trying more hard sudoku puzzles to see if I can solve them quicker than one hour.

Since "simon" is not a word, Google translate simply transliterated it into Hebrew. The actual Hebrew version of the Biblical name Simon is Shimon (Shee-mone). However, Google's transliteration can be read as the Hebrew word "see-moon," which means a sign or a mark. None of this pedantry makes it any less funny, and I got a hearty belly laugh out of it, so thank you.

The name "Simon" is not a word in Hebrew and is a name, and therefore google transliterated it to סימון, as in to place a mark on something or mark an exam. The name Simon actually translates to שמעון or "Shimon" (shi-MONE) deriving from the word שמע or "to listen" or "to hear".

Hebrew is a bit weird in the sense that the exact pronunciation of a word isn't always evident from the "everyday" way that it's written. Google correctly translates the English name Simon to the way it's written in Hebrew, which is סימון. But the issue is that this same written word can also be read as *simoon* in Hebrew, which means "sign", or "mark", as in road mark. Hebrew readers will understand the correct way to read the word from the context. Without context, the only way to really tell whether it's "Simon" or "Simoon", is with the addition of Niqqud: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niqqud
@gilrunchannel
@gilrunchannel 3 года назад
There are no matres lectionis in Hebrew. The way to write the name Simon in Hebrew is סימון. But סימון can also be read like sea-moon (with the emphasis on the second syllable), which means a mark or symbol.
@arielvanmoos7583
@arielvanmoos7583 3 года назад
What does matres lectionis mean?
@gilrunchannel
@gilrunchannel 3 года назад
Sorry, I wasn't accurate. In Hebrew all letters that may indicate a vowel are also used as consonants, so they are martes lectionis. For Simon, the י in סימון is a consonant and the ו is the vowel o. For a mark or a symbol, the י is the vowel i and the ו is the vowel u. From wikipedia: Matres lectionis (from Latin "mothers of reading", singular form: mater lectionis, from Hebrew: אֵם קְרִיאָה‎ ʾem kəriʾa) are consonants that are used to indicate a vowel, primarily in the writing down of Semitic languages such as Arabic, Hebrew and Syriac.
@EzraBradford
@EzraBradford 3 года назад
@@arielvanmoos7583 Extra marks on words to tell you the vowels, since Hebrew is by default written without indicating [most of the] vowels. Sort of like if in English we were to write like "xtr mrks on wrds". You still have pretty much everything you need to read text, and it's lots more compact. It's not a coincidence that phone "textspeak" uses similar compressions. But in Hebrew it's this shorter form that is the standard.
@amoswittenbergsmusings
@amoswittenbergsmusings 3 года назад
@@arielvanmoos7583 @Ariel van Moos @Ariel van Moos Mater lectionis is the Latin translation of the Hebrew אם הקריאה [ehm haqeri'a], "mother for reading". It is a grammatical term, based on a talmudic passage about the interpretation of letters in the written text of the Pentateuch, the 5 books of Moses, or, among us Jews, the Torah. Hebrew has a consonantal script which serves the language very well, since the meaning of words lies in their consonants. In Indo-European languages consonants have less semantic content. Like, rode, red, read, ride, rude have nothing to do which each other. In Hebrew that would be unthinkable. The letter combination M-L-KH *always* has the connotation of kingship, royalty, rulership etc. The letters SH-B-R mean breaking, fracture. SH-M-` (three letters, not two, the third is a guttural unknown in English except when someone makes sick) means "hearing, obeying, understanding". And so on. Letters can be added to, inserted into or appended to three letter roots to modify meanings but never to fundamentally change the basic meaning. "Reading mothers" are uses in the biblical texts. A few consonants (the glottal stop ALEF, the H, the W and the Y) act as surrogates to indicate vowels, to disambiguate or for deeper mystical reasons. ALEF ==> Ah, Ey, H==> Ah, Ey , Y ==> ee, ey and W ==> oh, oo. Israeli contemporary Hebrew uses reading mothers much more abundantly and even more so in transliterating foreign words and names. Non-Israeli Hebrew speakers more familiar with biblical and rabbinic texts than with Israeli literature and newspapers, have a hard time decoding the Israeli way of writing loanwords and non-Hebrew names. Arabic names in Hebrew are much easier to decode than English, French or German names. When I read סימון, I immediately read it as the Hebrew for 'mark, symbol'. In fact, the word is related to 'semantics' in "western" languages. I wouldn't think of the name Simon, unless the context would make clear it is a name. Written biblical Hebrew is an insanely beautiful language, very simple and yet almost infinitely layered in meaning, shades of meaning, resonances, associative properties. Jewish lore has it that the holy tongue is the very instrument of creation itself - but your mileage may vary, obviously.

At 18:00 there's a mistake as the two remaining squares for the 15 arrow can also be 6-6, because digits may repeat along an arrow. It didn't end up mattering for the solve, but I was proud to spot it anyway! :) Edit: Another mistake at 23:10 as the logic for the top arrow of 9 is *not* identical - this one can hold an 8 just fine.

Since the opening was so clever, I wanted to find a way to write more rigorously how we can find the value of the circled numbers. The goal is to calculate the minimum value for the circled numbers. We know the total sum of all diagonal clues (123), the sum of 4 boxes (180), the minimum value the extra cells (2*(1+2+3) + a 1-2 pair =15). So the minimum value for the diagonals + the arrows is 195, we can substract the total of the diagonals so the minimum sum off all arrows is 72. A single arrow sum is equal to 2 times the value of the circled number (by definition), if we calculate the average value of the circled numbers considering there are 4 arrows, we have 72/(4*2) =9. So there is only one possibility, all circled numbers must be 9. All credits to Simon for the reasoning.

"Simon"(spelled PROPERly with UPPERcase S) translates back to "Simon" and "simon" (spelled IMPROPERly with LOWERcase s) translates back to Mark. Maybe the secret message here is that "Simon the Proper/Upper/Greater" is Simon, and "Simon the Improper/Lower/Lesser" is Mark, i.e. Mark is just a lesser version of Simon.

No bifurcation this time. Most of the time I got stuck was cause I had neglected to do sudoku to fill in the next piece to burst forward.

At 18:00, double 6 is also allowed by the little killer clue. At this point in the solve, that not being the solution is more luck than it is wisdom. Without that lucky guess, the progress around the 678 pair box 8 would've been much harder as well. ^^' As if the puzzle wasn't hard enough, yet...

Note - Coloring the 1s, 2s, 4s & 5s helps a lot.

Well. I finished it. It did take 85 minutes but I finished it and that's big progress on a puzzle like that. Cracked the opening with less distress than it would have caused before and then got stuck. Several times. Think I need a nice mental lie down now. The arrow app will be a nightmare. I will buy it and torture myself anyway!

Hugely satisfying to solve! Not too difficult, as there are very few obvious ways to make progress. Elegant!

23:00 Why couldn't that one be an 8?
@PuzzleQodec
@PuzzleQodec 3 года назад
Yeah it could have been at that point. Fortunately the next step in the solve (coloring the 12 cells) rules it out before it's used somewhere in the video.

The secret is in the title of the puzzle 😂 you should color 123 and 9. I think. I don't know.

I wish I stopped after the break-in. Finding that made me feel clever. The remaining puzzle, not so much.

Anybody else believe the "..." to mean "678" after seeing the start to this puzzle? Fitting that it is in the middle of the title, being that it led to the end of it.

at 23:00 the arrow at the top is not identical logic to the one on the bottom, because the 18 combination is not restricted

@@CrackingTheCryptic Thanks! Now that I'm into the video our solution paths were pretty similar, so it's not like I found some secret - I think the speed improvements over the video were mostly just me lucking into taking the correct approach to take as my first attempt on almost every step. Edit: I did color-code the 4/5s (some of which were interconnected indirectly via what they were summing with), which may have been a speed boost.

well, I know Hebrew :) Simon is really סימון but סימון is also a word in Hebrew. it is pronounced a little different though: C-moon (c as the way you would say the latter name) In Hebrew, סימון is a mark

bit of over thinking but I'm not surprised by that point! "You must take your opponent into a deep, dark forest where 2+2=5, and the path leading out is only wide enough for one" - Mikhail Tal (chess grandmaster)

Well, I managed to do this without any hints from the video. It took me nearly two hours but I don't care, I'm really proud that I managed this at all because it was ridiculously hard and I didn't even break the puzzle once (though I'm sure I got lucky once or twice with faulty deductions that led to the correct result. or maybe not). Loved it.
