I think it’s good you took the extra time to explain why you had to take the leg off. Sometimes people just need to hear a longer explanation especially if it’s something major. You may see it daily but regular people don’t and they may need to be shown the thought process and how it was the best available option. I appreciate it anyway so thanks for everything you all do to help all these animals!

There is no harm in asking him why he doesn't do prosthetics. The good news is that he's a good doctor and actually lets us in on the reasons why! Should Dr. Matt let people get him down? No, he is doing what his training tells him is correct for these animals.

I am now 70 years old, and have seen a thing or two in my lifetime. And yes, BTW hubby and I are donors to VR. In my experience, DISlikers, almost never donate/foster/adopt/rescue/advocate, or really do very much of anything. All they do is sit and disapprove. I hope they will be very happy up on their moral high ground. The rest of us down here can get on with the business of creating value in the world and supporting others (like Vet Ranch) who also do the same. Over and out.

Plus, he was already used to not using that leg, so losing it wasn't a big deal. Animals are so much more resilient than people want to give them credit for, they want to think animals go through the same things humans do when losing a limb. Usually, by the time they lose the limb though, they've got so used to not using it, it's no different, and maybe even a relief to not have to drag the thing around any more. So, yes, it does improve their quality of life, for the simple reason that they can move around easier.
@kaitlyngatineau6240

People here need to understand that many of these dogs and cats were facing euthanization.. would you rather the animal be euthanized or have an amputated leg and then adopted out? Dr. Matt tries his very best.. but he can't spend a fortune on MRIs and prosthetics (that will likely become chew toys) on every animal so although physically more could have been done, it just wasn't feasible under these circumstances. It's sad that Dr. Matt would have had to do an x-ray just to make the naysayers happy, even though he already knew what the outcome would have been anyways. He's the vet.. you are not. Let him do what he does and lets enjoy the fact the lovely pup was adopted into a new home.
@4cornersgalsst415
@4cornersgalsst415 6 лет назад
I totally agree, although he may have done the radiographs. Folks have an unrealistic view of animal rescue. Millions of animals are euthanized every year. A. it was a good decision for this little guy. B. prosthetics? He doesn't need it. And the cost would be equivalaent to saving 100's of lives.

Do those people understand how much a prosthetic costs for a pet?!?! I watched a series of videos of a vet in the UK that does that....and trust me, if you don't have "thousands of dollars" you can't get it. It's called The Supervet, amazing show, amazing doctor and his dedication to peoples pets is wild. Very, very expensive!
@catv9085
@catv9085 5 лет назад
Yup, plus it took a ton of failures to get to that one success. And it's a wonderful achievement, when you have a 150-pound arthritic dog who couldn't function on 3 legs, who has a semi-retired millionaire owner who can afford to give them a chance at decent quality of life by taking extreme measures with the possibility of failure. But why do that with a small breed puppy even if they could afford it, when an amputation has faster recovery, and they're going to be perfectly happy on 3 legs anyway? Just doesn't make any sense. And of course, that's to say nothing of all the money it takes, and needing 24/7 care for months afterwards, which is obviously something homeless animals just aren't going to get. I think people tend to have an emotional attachment to the idea of "this animal lost a limb" and lose sight of the fact that they're still losing a limb when they get a prothetic anyway! Supervet is really amazing, but that kind of extreme operation is just not the best choice for every animal, even finances aside.

Remember that (almost) everything on vet ranch is paid for by donations, they don’t really have the funding to try a procedure that might not work when something as simple as amputation works just fine. This is especially true when you don’t know the animals medical history. If someone were to bring their pet in with a similar issue they would have funding to use specifically for that animal, and they would know what, if anything might have occurred to cause the problem. Amputated limbs on animals, once healed, have no negative repercussions. There’s just an empty spot where there was once a leg, the animal can walk just fine and there are no additional procedures needed.

A lot of people are like “oh no, three legged dog/cat :(“ I absolutely love three legged animals, my current cat is named yardstick, because he only has 3 feet. They’re just such happy little tripods I can’t help but love them!

Elmer, sober or drunk, is absolutely adorable! * I've seen so many where you folks left the stump and wondered why. This is the surgery version I'd seen recommended more often. It allows their body to "recenter" instead of forever trying to use a part that no longer functions.

I watch this episode at the doctor. And a little boy that was sitting next to me looked over and said well will his leg grow back. He had the cutest look on his face. I explain to him that no it wouldn’t, but he would be OK without it. I showed him the rest of the video with his mom‘s promotion and he was very happy to see that the dog was OK.

Thanks for the addressing how and why you approach amputation the way you do. It was a question for me and i didn't even think about the notes you said... like about the dog freaking chewing on the dang leg. A natural thing for a dog to do. thanks!

Amputation is the right thing. I think some people watch shows like Vet on the Hill or Bondi Vet where sometimes instead of an amputation the will do something else...like some kind of prosthetic, but those are very specific cases. Even those guys do amputation most of the time.

Whenever I see something about animal amputation, I am just honestly amazed at how quickly they bounce back. An animal’s ability to adapt will always be incredibly inspiring to me. From everything I’ve seen of animal amputation, it isn’t a tragedy like it is to a lot of humans, it’s a relief. However any vet can make a pet most happy is beautiful in my book.

What a handsome boy Elmer is. Having said that, I wished there was an alternative to fixing his bummed leg so he wouldn't require an amputation but if the leg comes in the way of Elmer having a good quality of life, then out with the leg. Dr. Matt I'm glad you took him to your home. He's very good with children. Anyway. Thank you all for the awesome work you do (not just with Elmer), but with all other animals. You're awesome. By the way. I am glad Elmer was adopted. Hope he's adjusting to his Forever Home :-)

Poor baby yes from our perspective as humans. I'd probably be suicidal if I lost a leg. Dogs are different. They don't know what it means to be disfigured or different. They just know love and if they're pain-free in a happy home with lots of food, they're good to go. It's painful to see this emotionally and if my dog had to have an amputation, I'd be in hysterics. Ultimately, his mindset as a dog doesn't process the loss of a limb like we do which is good. I was hoping for a different outcome myself because it's just how we're programmed but he's going to be fine.
