How Did Honda's Reliability Die?

Honda was the epitome of reliability, but as of late consumer reports have moved Honda down in terms of car reliability. From my perspective, they've fallen off and I'm going to tell you how Honda reliability has gone away.
It's a bad situation now, as companies like Toyota and Lexus have leapt above Honda and Acura, at least as far as I'm concerned.

I'm a retired mechanic. I always bought honda because of reliability. The 1.5 in 2017 to 2019 is terrible in cold winter condtions. No heat and oil dilution. Honda use to stand behind their product. @@billk8899 Good question. All new vehicles have problems. If were talking gas engines only. I would put the rav 4 on my list. I like that it has a larger engine . It has port injection and direct injection for less carbon build up on intake valves. Rav 4 did have driveline problems . My best friend runs his own automotive repair shop and agreed with me on that Toyota products in general were better built . Honda is still a decent product. Some thoughts on the 1.5L turbo, which I consider Honda’s most pressing problem. A DIY’er with the 1.5 had his oil analyzed after a 5000 mi oil chance using 87 octane gas, and found a 6% gasoline dilution … which is a lot. He then repeated the experiment using 93 octane, and found a 1.2% dilution. The surmise is that the turbo is creating so much pressure that pre detonation is occurring, which is forcing more gasoline through the piston rings. This is also a possible reason for the premature head gasket failures that seem to be turning up. So the general advice for maximizing the life of this engine seems to be to use 93 octane, 3000 mile oil changes, stay off the turbo for “recreation”, and let the car idle for a minute or two to allow the turbo to cool and re-lubricate before shutting it off. This assumes you own a 1.5. If you don’t and are really looking for long life and reliability, don’t buy one.
@ECPP

That’s some great points for those managing the 1.5 and some of its nuances.

Well I own a 2017 sport hatchback with the 1.5 turbo and I have no oil dilution issues or any issues stated here. Also he forgot to mention the most important thing which is these motors are direct injection and requires carbon maintenance etc
@martygillespie5486
@martygillespie5486 6 месяцев назад
Good point on the direct injection. I should have mentioned it. I own a 2016 CR-V which my wife drives short distances. I had an induction performed on it in October and the change in idle smoothness and performance was noticeable. It should be on the list. Too bad Honda hasn’t installed port injectors in addition to direct like Toyota has. I’m glad that you are not having problems with oil dilution, but others are, and I stick to my guns here that this is not the bulletproof Honda engine of old and will require special attention. As Honda isn’t the only company with these issues (the Ford eco boosts are a disaster), I also stick to my comment that putting a very small displacement engine under high pressure so it is working near its maximum is asking for trouble. Thanks for bringing up the direct injection issue!

Good comment. I also drive mine sport mode in the winter to keep the rpms up . This way the engine gets to operating temp faster. I just drove a 2024 crv with 1.5 and noticed it did operating temp faster. They also removed the engine temp guage. Honda owners want reliability. I'm very disappointed with my 1.5 in my 2019 crv. I sold and managed at Honda. There's truth in every thing you said, but there are a couple of points l would like to add. Honda's CVT's have fewer issues than most of the others. But in our shop meetings, our mechanics advised that CVT owners should do this every 30k miles...change the transmission fluid: Simply drain the old fluid. Measure that fluid. Replace it with with the exact same amount of new fluid. New fluid MUST be "Honda Specific" fluid that you buy over the counter at Honda. The other recurring issue of almost all Hondas for 20 years now are A/C condenser issues. I've had a '95 CR-V and 2020 Hatchback (Swinton, GB plant) blow a compressor at 60k and a 2020 Hatch at 30k miles. The Hatch now has 80,000+ miles without any more problems. They have offered a 10 yr warranty on any vehicle with that issue. My 2020 Civic Coupe (Alliston, Canada) has been a 100% perfect car for 65,000 miles. Both cars have had no driveline issues whatsoever. I stand by Honda because they address serious problems and mitigate most quickly with a "fix" or a solid extended warranty, as opposed to arguments with the Service Manager. One thing about the Fuel/Oil Mixing issue. This came to light after the realization that Direct Injection pressurized the fuel so strongly that apparently, in cold weather, some seepage happens. The colder the climate, the more common the issue. Now, l believe our friend Mark lives in Edmonton, Canada, which the rest of Canada sees as a suburb of the North Pole, so this can be a serious concern for them on frigid cold mornings with multiple stops without warming up the engine. It especially bad if Mark has to get out his dog sled team! (I live in White Rock, Canada. We have Palm & Banana Trees 😂)

Pilots, Passports, and Odsseys had entertainment systems that routinely blacked out while driving. Done dozens of them. They look for more and more reasons to not validate warranty. Hi As a retired master motor mechanic / car dealer and my family drive Honda Vehicles for more years than I can remember. It’s probably a bit different in the USA manufacture vehicles and colder winters that we are used to here in Australia, we don’t have the oil diluting due to over fuelling especially on freezing cold start conditions so it’s not been a problem here. Also most of our Hondas are either manufactured in Japan or their Thailand factory. I have always recommend changing engine oil/filter more regularly than the manufacturer requirements it’s the best thing you can do for any engine especially one thats not driven long continuous distance where the engine can get up to working temperatures. I was told that as a young apprentice from my senior mechanics I never forgot it as well as many other things. Like all mechanical things they have to service and looked after properly and also driven accordingly, I said for years don’t rev the engine when you first start especially in the morning turn the start and let it idle for a minute or two switch in the radio adjust the heating etc. On turbo engines when coming to switch off the engine just wait one to two mins before switching off the start Key/ Button let the turbo spool down a little with the engine oil still circulating. Anyway I still think Honda makes great cars and especially engines but need a little more maintenance. Only my opinion as I said 50 years in the motor trade. Cheers Keep Up The Great Work. 😊

Let me start this with I still have my first Honda CRV 2002, 198,000 miles with the 2.4L engine. Had a 2012 Pilot after that and that became problematic after its 4th year. I traded that in on December 2016 for a 2017 CRV with the 1.5L turbo engine. With this car , I won the lottery. The oil / gas delusion problem started within a month or so. Oil levels on the dip stick would get higher & higher. I complained to Honda USA and they extended my warranty to 6 years or 100,000 miles, whatever came first. Found out later, before this redesigned model came to the states that there was an issue with 350,000 CRV’s in Asia & Europe. So having this issue they brought it to the US. Within a few months there was a recall about this issue but the damage was done. In 2022, with 48,000 miles and 6 1/2 years old I was having Head gasket problems. Honda broke my heart. I traded up to a Lexus.

I work for Honda, and have firsthand experience working on these vehicles in the great white north. The issues I have with them are not what was listed here which I find mildly suprising. The fuel dilution has not been much cause for concern. Have hardly seen any with catastrophic engine failure that wasn't a result born of extreme neglect. Perhaps we will see further down the line as they age the consequences of excess fuel build up. The problems I have with the 1.5T engine are the injectors that seem to fail at or around 80,000km. (The vehicles running higher octane fuels tend to delay that a bit more.) and the rear main/Transmission input shaft seal leaks have been a source of frustration for awhile now. Unrelated to the 1.5T the AC condensers on 10th Gen civics seem to be as fragile as glass, and frustrating to say the least to deal with. Every 2 years I've had to replace my condenser. (Fortunately under warranty.) HVAC is definetely not a strong point for Honda. I do agree with the quality going downhill, but mostly from a parts quality perspective. These constant recalls are proof of that. But to me the overall design is solid, and I'd argue they've proven less costly to own than vehicles in the past (Especially V6's, including the recalled ones.) Remember it was not long ago (2011-2017) when they had Piston ring land issues, and that resulted in the engines getting torn down. Not to mention they had oil leaks everywhere, that prompted Timing belt replacements constantly, and caused breakdowns. (Oil pump seal leaks, Power steering pumps leaking into the timing belt, weak hydraulic timing belt tensioners, Spool valves that leaked oil into the alternators causing break downs, ect.) New generation of vehicles, new problems. I think they're doing the best they can, given how they're forced to implement all this new technology in the last 10 years to meet emissions standards, and compete with other brands by implementing annoying infotainment, and crash avoidance systems which make cars in general more annoying to own and service as they age.

Unfortunately industry wide quality seems to be sliding. It doesn’t take much searching to find complaint after complaint about the new Tundra either, everything from blown motors to interior squeaks and rattles. Lots of new models coming out which will take some time to iron the kinks out. But vehicles also continue to get more and more complex while manufacturers look for ways to make every component cheaper to pinch pennies. The end result is a less reliable product for the consumer.

The service manager said the turbo's drive fantastic but they will fail except in rare cases where an owner drives to make them last longer - but 95% are abused as the turbo is enjoyable.

Excellent video. And I agree 100% with what's being said. Former owner of a 2021 Honda CRV and glad it's gone with only 30,640K miles. No engine or transmission problems within 30.7 miles. The HVAC compressor broke and was replaced under warranty. In a few months, a/c broke again, another warranty issue and was fixed. After the second issue, I asked the lead dealer technician about my problem, and in one on one conversation I was told "There is no guaranty this will fix your problem". Second HVAC warranty issue would've cost $4000.00 for those out of warranty. Research problems with Honda HVAC problems, and you'll see thousands of complaints that go back a long way.

I can tell you, as a technician for 20 years, honda's have very little issues with CVT transmissions. And by the way, they do have a torque converter except the early hybrid ones. Compared to other manufacturers, Honda CVTs are way better in terms of reliability and driveability. Also, Toyota cvts designs is a planetary setup where the sun gear is driven by an electric motor, so no belts or pulleys. You think an Atv drive system is similar to an automotive one? Sorry but you are totally ignorant when it comes to drivetrains. If there's one company that has unreliable CVTs, it's Nissan. All manufacturers will have recalls, A responsible manufacturer will address and fix issues. Honda is one of the better ones when it comes to that.

@christianlaforge9597- I was under the impression that Honda's CVT's were better than other manufacturers also. I was surprised to find that the HV-R 2022 only had a 1.8L 4 cylinder engine ( no turbo) and that the 2.0 L didn't come out until 2023. I'm concerned that a 1.8L will be underpowered. What say you ?
@christianlaforge9597
@christianlaforge9597 3 месяца назад
@S.L.S-407 The 1st gen HRV cvt in Fwd format is fine. It's ok for an economy car, but when the same cvt is paired with the awd drivetrain, it's underpowered. The Awd is also the worst combo in regards to reliability. These ones shreads belts and have much greater failure rates than any other honda cvts. If you want an awd suv, stick with a crv with the (physically) bigger and stronger transmission. Regardless of what you choose, change the fluids often. But to answer your original question, the new Hrv is on a way better and refined platform(civic) with a slight weight penalty. Its 2L mill is also an excellent, durable engine with proven, trouble-free port injection. The older R18 in the first gen was also great but now too small for the added weight.

@@christianlaforge9597 -Thank you for such a fulsome answer. I only wanted the FWD and not the AWD. Since I will not be off roading, I don't see the point of paying extra for the AWD which I really don't need. I REALLY like the styling of the 2022 and the 2023 for me falls VERY flat. However when I saw the 2022 only had 1.8L I was concerned about whether it would last for years. Out of warranty, the dealer I charged $500 for that repair, I did had them change all the spark plugs while they were in there. Later an animal chewed the transmission wires apart. It wouldn’t shift. That was another $500. Seems Honda went to a soybean based wiring insulation that animals love to chew. I sold it after this. Later, A lady I worked with had a rabbit chew her electronic steering wires on a 2020 Civic. The dealer fixed it for $700 and it was chewed got through a second time. I purchased a 2019 RDX A Spec what a mistake, Black display on a trip could not use the 40 K car had to rely on my 200 phone. Corp Customer service and dealerships are very unprofessional. Got it fixed 4 times, on the 3 time it sat in my garage for 2 months went to crank the RDX and it just appeared. Well I would never buy another Honda product because from the Corp down to the dealerships are really piss poor. Also who in there right mind would drive a RDX SUV like a NSX or a Type R that is what they are after in advertising not in quality. I know Lexus Corp is great because I also own a mint 92 LS 400 and I needed help from Lexus Corp in the past they are fantastic. At lease to me and my experience. I'm a retired Honda service technican with over 40 years experience and I will say that the modern technology is being "built"with issues based on cost cutting. Take rack and pinion electric power steering as an example. Most steering racks are now made with the motor built within the main rack housing as one unit and it's non serviceable. Where as before, the DC motor sat on the pinion assembly and was replaceable. It's all about cutting costs to save money at the customers expense. A traditional hydraulic rack and pinion system however has more parts and all of its seals, o-rings etc as well as most of its parts are available separately. So you know with this, it's cheaper to service and replace individual items than buying a whole assembly. Consider this scenario and you quickly get to realize where the bean counters have been working on the vehicle to cut costs at their end.

Honda reliability is still there. That being said service requirements have got to change with the new tech being used, but its not people are trying to service these new engines the way they have for decades and you cannot do it. You can't do 10k mile oil changes you got to go back to every 3k miles because High Pressure fuel pumps all brands have problems pushing fuel past the rings into the engine oil. For those that have short commutes its more important as you do not drive enough miles to burn off the excess fuel that gets in the oil. On any turbo engine I would not go past 3k miles without an oil change. Same for CVT you cannot drive them 45-50k miles before service you have to service them every 25k-30k miles if you want them to last 200k or more. They are not going back to the older reliable engines because they cannot go back they have to meet government emissions standards. Even Toyota has going Turbo charged and have already showed signs of new issues. If you can find a non-turbo engine go that route its better. You might get away with oil changes every 5k miles if you have a long commute, but short mile city driving you had better drop down to every 3k miles to avoid oil dilution issues.

@@Tracy-wr7mj Over simplification. Automakers negotiated emission standards with our government. Why did automakers sign up to their demands? Government legislators don't know technology or what is even achievable. Reason automakers sign up is because 'they make more profit on small displacement, turbos, CVT and hybrids as they fail out of warranty.' And that whether you believe it or not is a conspiracy on the American people. Call it the Green conspiracy.

Now the question is why car manufacturers switching to makkng disposable vehicles. Could it be that, they realized that folks keep their vehicles for a long time and they're not selling as many new vehicles = not profitable $ . Got an 04 Rav4 with 315k miles. Looks like the days you buy a reliable car without recalls or premature Transmission failer. Plus the MSRP so inflated high markups. Especially in California.

CVT owners (I am one) need to remember that scheduled maintenance on a CVT is critical to them lasting. Many people will skip CVT fluid changes because is costs a couple of hundred bucks, and then down the road the CVT develops issues which wouldn't have happened with fluid changes. When the CVT develops issues it's too late.

The problem with CVT's is that even with proper fluid changes, they still are a weak transmission by design and will have a higher rate of failure.

I have a 2017 Civic Sedan 1.5T with a manual 6 sp., I sent a sample of oil to Blackstone Labs and they didn't find an abnormally high amount of gas in my oil. I'll send another sample in to them in April. I'm driving a gear lower than normal at all times and shift at higher revs. So I keep my combustion temp up, which in turn gets my cylinder head temp up and therefore all the oil all over hotter and I feel I'm burning up the extra oil more than most folks. I am almost never running in 6th gear during winter time driving on the highway because the 6 sp. gearbox for Civics has super tall gears. My Honda Fit runs about 3400 RPM at 70 or so mph in 6th gear. Yet my Civic seems to be like at idle at 70 in 6th gear!! It's only about 2700 RPM!! So I drive in 5th instead, giving me about the same RPM in 5th as my Fit would be in 6th. The engine runs smooth and is no noisier in 5th rather that 6th. For cold engine starts, what I do is to only warm it up for 40 seconds and then drive off, keeping the revs lower at first for the sake of the turbocharger but soon I'm keeping it above 3000 RPM and therefore warming it up under load much faster than letting it warm up still parked. I also don't turn on the heat at all to keep the water from running through the heater core at first. This also helps with a faster warm up. It's is important not to drive off too briskly in cold weather with a cold engine when you have a turbo. Turbos needs hot oil. So I have to balance that a little with my efforts to warm up the engine more quickly. But with the modern very thin viscosity oils, it's not as big a deal as you might think. I just make sure I don't drive it hard enough on a cold engine to go into turbo boost. Boosting the turbo with the oil not up to temp is not good for it. But really with modern cars running 0-20 weight oil, warming them up forever before you drive off is not necessary any more. But yet folks still do it. With my car it would do far more harm than good and allow far more it to blow past the rings into my crankcase. Gotta go for a fast warmup.

The CVTs in Toyota hybrids have ZERO belts and ZERO pulleys. They are called eCVTs. The use a planetary gearset with 3 inputs and one output. The 3 inputs are MG1, MG2, and the engine (which only runs as needed), MG2 is connected directly to the wheels (through a differential). MG1 controls the gear ratio, recharges the battery and starts the engine when needed. In the case of the Gen 4 Prime, MG1 also helps move the car in EV mode, but returns to normal in hybrid mode. The mechanical CVTs you refer to came to us from Subauru who got the idea from DAF. DAF used pairs of cones too, but with rubber belts. Tiny cars with tiny engines, My self propelled lawnmower works like that, with a hand control varrying two pairs of cones ro control the walking speed. Subaru added a metal belt to this. Some non-hybrid Toyotas also use this. If you hear CVT, look foe eCVT or HSD (Hybrid Synergy Drive) before you get you hackles up. No belts or pulleys!
