Today’s video is an exciting one! I found the most insane vintage treasure to add to my new home. I was truly shocked when I found it….and even more shocked when I almost broke it! I also took a stab at stripping the paint from the windows in the living room. I wasn’t sure what I would uncover. Lastly, I attended an amazing event at one of my favorite spots Olive Ateliers, come along with me for the ride!

Consult with a carpenter to determine if the stained glass windows are suitable for hinging and to be used as doors. The side stiles are pretty thin wood and they probably were originally fixed and decorative rather than functional.

I agree. There's bound to be solutions but it's important to invest wisely. Don't want to face disasters later on because you failed to do your research and course corrections. It would be disasterous to invest in property, security and insurance if they refuse to payout because the wrong thing was installed or something installed incorrectly.

Great points. in the end there is a solution, but it may not be installed as exterior doors. Your climate is different, but good points on how can be used.
@kylieharrison3782
@kylieharrison3782 Год назад
@@ritaevans7125 I agree. Maybe a set of double glazed doors on the outside keeping the fancy doors for on the inside of the doors as 'window treatment' rather like blinds or curtains. Maybe the outside ones on hinges but fancy inside ones on sliding tracks but fancier than barn doors. The solution might just need a bit of creativity.

I grew up in an 1890s house on the East Coast and the window trim and baseboards look like the same wood as what you have, especially the grain pattern. I think it's probably oak and it definitely looks original. You can probably take a photo of the wood and mail it to the local extension service or take it somewhere that wood is sold and a person there should be able to tell you. In the past, wood used to be varnished and varnish gets darker as it ages. I think that's what the darker layer over the wood is. The wood trim in our house had a layer of varnish over it. Varnishes can still be used today, but widespread use of varnishes fell out of favor, partly because they are highly flammable even when dry, and are toxic when applied. Let us know what you find out.
@j.n.sloane
@j.n.sloane Год назад
I agree that it is original. I owned a 1920's Mediterranean style house and this trim is very similar to what we had. It had mostly oak but also some mahogany in places. The grain looks more open so I'm leaning toward oak.

Citristrip works great. Sometimes takes two coats. The first coat applied just like you did. Scrape off as much as you can. Apply another coat, cover, let it sit for a while, and scrape it off. Fine steel wool works well on the last of it. Always use a neutralizer and then mineral spirits. Takes time and patience and it has the potential to be messy. If you take your time, the product works! (Cannot believe the door survived the fall!)

The wood still has some varnish and stain on it. You will have to sand it down to get to the actual wood and it is probably oak. Also be careful with the heat gun, left in one spot to long and the wood burns under the layers.

I agree that its oak (probably red oak considering what the grain looks like), and that it has either a heavy varnish or glaze finish left on much of the surface. Steel wool and denatured alchohol is the way to go. Then some sanding pads of various grits will take it down to the natural wood and the sanding will help tighten up the grain - should be beautiful when you're done.

The trim looks like there’s still shellac- ask your contractor, he’s got a wealth of wisdom. This would make sense since that is a bear to strip- often paint was chosen when a person became exhausted 😩. Also-Please ask him to do the new doors. I’m 70- an avid DIYer (married to a historical contractor for 10 years) so I understand both ends of the spectrum. The window sashes are thin to hang and he’ll know if reinforcements are needed. 😘Elizabeth

Hey! :) You can actually find out the exact date of manufacture of the windows: On a double pain window the date is usually printed in between the two pains of glass or sometimes on the window seal. Your windows right now look like PVC... so definitely not from the 1920s. It would be so nice to update them to more authentic looking wooden windows with modern insulation. It would really complete and elevate the whole look and atmosphere of your stunning home!

I agree, these newer windows were fitted within the existing window frames with a new frame. It's a cheap way to update windows but it reduces the size of the glass and makes the frame super large. Considering how many windows this home has, I can see why the previous owners made that choice, but it's such a shame...

OMG, I didn't really love the doors in the store....but then, you got them home and ohhhh wow!!!! These doors are perfect in this room!! That's the colors you were looking for in the walls. I mean, when you put these doors up, the wall colors transformed, wow! Then, seeing the natural wood from the windows, it's gorgeous. The wood from the windows look original because the stain is that same weird dark colors from the 1920's. I'm excited now to see this room finished. YAY!!! This is why I watch you, I learn from the Master.

You are meant to have them. Okay, I’m going to continue watching. I hope there’s nothing else coming because my heart and my dogs can’t take anymore fears tonight.

You are one lucky guy, 1st to find those amazing matching stained glass windows/doors and for it not breaking! Wow! Thought for sure when you lifted off the floor the glass would be broken. I have been refinishing an old desk from the 50s with layers of paint, now going to use the heat method. It’s definitely been a pain to get the paint off. Love how you mix your events into this vlog. What a fun evening. Can’t wait to see more. You are an inspiration Drew! 👏 Love your enthusiasm!

Drew this was so hysterical- your excitement and giddiness, the screaming in car " to let it all out", mom on speaker phone while you rhapsodize over windows and finally the window falling over ( exactly how I would written the scene in a screenplay)- but after all the laughter- those window panels ARE amazing AND look like they are original to house ( wow could they be?)

That "door" is a window, by my thinking, since it's off the ground level.Southern homes had those to accommodate indoor-outdoor summer living in porches and balcony type situations. Imagine if you found the original windows! Maybe you could take the hinges off the old doors to use for the new ones, assuming the hinges are worthy.
