How Did MultiVersus Succeed Where Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl Failed?

Compared to a game like Super Smash Bros Melee, Multiversus is the new kid on the block. But in a genre where character archetypes tend to homogenise, Multiversus manages to stand apart.
Are platform fighters all the same?
For over 20 years, the platform fighter genre has been dominated by a single game: Super Smash Bros. The Nintendo IP, the love and care that has gone into each game, and the fact that Smash literally pioneered the genre has made it difficult for any other platform fighters to compete with the perennial giant. Despite countless games made by AAA and indie developers alike, Smash has explored so designs and mechanics and character archetypes that it is truly difficult for anyone to break new ground. Many have tried, but most just end up feeling like Smash clones.
Multiversus is the exception.

One big reason I see is diversity. NASB characters almost all got the same gameplan, fish with your safe aerials and immediately start ladder comboing like a mf. Multiversus' roster features a pretty large variety of play-styles, from big bodies that excel at neutral, zoners that have a strong setup game, and NASB style combo monsters Additionally, Multiversus also is carving out a completely unique niche for itself rather than trying to directly compete with the big dog of platform fighters by focusing its competitive meta on 2v2.
@mehgamer467
@mehgamer467 Год назад
This was the older meta of NAsb. They changed DI like early at launch and not all characters just up air you to do death. That's been changed awhile ago. I also wouldn't call every 1v1 game competition. Rivals and brawlhala never tried to compete with smash. Nick also never tried. The creator even said so in a tweet. It's just hbox and people on Twitter starting this weird "smash killer" thing.

While I'm a fan of NASB and Ludosity's dedication. I must say they didn't do a good job marketing the game outside of the competitive audience. Hearing about these awesome post-launch support only to be met with empty numbers is just sad.

Honestly, while there is a lot about the actual game that determines its success, the biggest difference between Multiversus and most smash competitors is that Multiversus actually had a marketing budget. There are plenty of great platform fighters that saw less success, because for a few weeks, it was almost impossible NOT to see one of your favorite streamers playing the game on twitch. They went hard on ads, as well as sponsoring streamers to play their game, and it clearly paid off. Sadly, it doesn't matter how good your game is if nobody knows about it.

You're the only person I'm gonna reply to here but lemme put your coping comment in the trash bin for a minute & remind you of the fact that no. Not even close, NASB in almost every conceivable way was trying way too hard to follow Smash's formula. Have you seen the f*cking main menu? lmao you couldn't honestly tell me with a straight face that's not a smash clone menu. There's a cursor for picking your character from a grid of colorful cast while the 4 selected player squares are down below lining the bottom of the screen. Each character is given the same kit, there are only 2-3 characters that don't follow a strict formula. (In the sense that it doesn't feel genuine), spongebob's up air is the same as patrick's up air & so on, from hitbox to hurtbox, their cast is all carbon copies that just visually look different. Where as Multi strictly designed every character to be better or worse at something giving them flavor and uniqueness..ergo actually being creative. Like he mentioned in this video, there are slow characters there are fast characters, ones with great aerial options, some with the best grounded options. ((AND there's no need to even get me started on the characters SPECIAL moves, which are all insanely personalized, idk about you, but I ain't seen that kinda dedication since smash. I say Multiversus deserves it's time in the spotlight for branching out & doing things their way. In the end it really doesn't matter what anyone thinks, the fact of the matter is Warner Bros. gave their dev team the LOVE they needed. & it translated into Multiversus today.

Look at how many traditional fighting games there are that are so similar to each other, and yet nobody bats an eye. Similarities to Smash is not a reason for criticism, not every game that comes out needs to flip the genre on its head. Also, the criticism that every character feels the same in this game is completely uninformed. If you have watched any set in this game within the past few months, you'd notice that every character has their own unique style of gameplay that appeals to different people. The only people that think that every character plays the same looked at the game at launch and never touched it again. Yeah exactly. People are missing that the game was F2p which means they were hoping a huge amount of the free players would stick around. At a peak of 150k, only around 5% of them actually stuck around which for the long game, means it technically would be a failure. This game was built to be like overwatch or fortnite. Big budget, big microtransactions throwing around its IPs. I would guess that some exec is sweating this one as they watch the player count dwindle.

Good video! Multiversus also has an "unfair" advantage over Nickelodeon all stars: The popularity of the characters. While nick's IPs have famous names, WB has more history and options: Superman, Batman, Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry,...These characters are not only relevant but were also vital to the entertainment industry, and they had decades of influence before nick or nintendo could even establish their franchises...They're not using it to the fullest potential though... Smash bros is still the more complete game but i think multiversus has more potential. Nintendo is only popular in the west and japan, and you need to buy their products to get to know their IPs. For WB on the other hand, you can just turn on the TV, in most countries, and sooner or later you'll be exposed to the characters of this game. In that sense there could be a bigger audience

Here’s my thoughts for both games: For environment, and more polished development, I’d give to Multiversus. Dialogue, Fluidity, etc. it’s clear that this game had a higher budget, and for most of the part it’s not as primitive as NASB. In character moveset, attack properties, and character classes. The team did a good job incorporating all that to the game. Though, the fact the base roster is on a free rotation schedule is a deterrent to the game. I understand it’s F2P, but at cost of grinding or even paying to play the base roster? Paying for DLC, costumes, emotes, banners, that’s all fine. But the base roster should be free. There’s a lack of modes in Multiversus: Solo, Team, FFA, then bots. You’re playing the same 3 modes, just either it’s Bots, or ranked. It makes the game quite repetitive, and a chore to play. There isn’t a. “Party game” like Grab the coins, Home Run contest, or something like Break the Targets. In addition, there are no NO ITEMS too! Most the items are things a part of a character’s moveset! NASB, has party games, and items (although they’re late). The game feels like you’re playing on Turbo mode. It’s fun being able to do unorthodox things, such as cancel your dash attack to a smash or “strong attack”, or ladder up airs. However it’s also a double edged sword. I know they’re balancing frequently, but the game is still primitive. There isn’t directional throws, every character has a universal throw; it can use to catch, toss projectiles, and throw your opponent like an item. In addition, some the character’s moveset are poorly designed. Korra, Toph, Patrick, and even Aang. Their moveset are so lackluster despite having a lot of material to work with. What motivation is there to play a game if your characters aren’t interesting to play? Title is an over exaggeration , NASB did pretty good for what they had to work with. I wouldn’t say Multiversus “succeeded” over NASB.

I think NASB got a tough go at things just because it's hard to stay afloat in the platform fighter genre without being smash. It's already bad enough that platform fighter games are seen as smash clones, but NASB had to go against that while also lacking in budget. Gamermill and the makers of NASB is a smaller dev group. WB games is HUGE. To say a game with a smaller dev team and budget should fit the criteria of what multiversus brought to the table (free to play, voice acting, licensed music, hyperactive character releases, smooth official launch, sharp visuals and graphics) is just insanely unfair imo. They did great with that they had to work with and for what it's worth, NASB is snappy and even feels like a tighter, more responsive game than multiversus, with a more diverse move-set for characters. Platform fighters don't get enough credit because people don't want to hurt their Fandom of smash. NASB was good, albeit not being worth $40-$50 at the time (needed more content). Multiversus is even better, much better, but even it gets criticized for having dropped viewership and player count.

_MultiVersus_ definitely has potential to be one of the most successful non-Smash platform fighters tied with _Rivals of Aether._ The different mechanics, playstyle and very creative movesets show how much they're to sway from Smash Bros. and be its own thing. On top of that, it's clear the devs have a lot of love and care for the source material because it shows in every single frame of animation. On top of that the team is surprisingly small. However, the game has some clear and notable flaws that is currently holding it back, in my opinion. I can give the devs some slack because the game still is in "Open Beta", after all. - There are a LOT of projectiles; nearly every character in the roster has some sort of ranged attack. This creates a very zoning-focused gameplay and can easily cluster the screen. - The low ending lag and whiff frames on a lot of moves makes hard to punish; a lot of the most powerful attacks in MultiVersus have incredibly generous windows of frame cancel with jumps and dodges. Jake is particular has been problematic because his kit is ridiculously safe and has little to no weaknesses, which is why he has been a top tier on tournaments. - Dodge is way too generous. As aforementioned, you can dodge cancel moves to make combos, but the decay takes forever to happen. This results in many matches being boiled down to dodge spamming until someone slips. - This is a more technical issue, but hitboxes are incredibly busted in this game, even after the overhaul. You often get hit by stuff you're not supposed to, and won't hit stuff you're supposed to. There stil a lot of hitboxes that need some adjustments. - The class system, while being an interesting take in the genre and bringing some MOBA elements to it (Player1stGames is composed of former Riot Game employees, after all), I think this hinders a lot of what the game can offer. There is a lot of discussion on "Why are Mages so OP?" because of player's already existing conception of how Mages operate in MOBAs. The devs could perhaps rename these classes to other stuff to avoid this kind of issue. But honestly, despite all these technical problems (on top of servers being wonky) I'm having an absolutely blast with this game. Clocking over 100 hours on Steam.

Hype/Expectations I feel plays a slight part (with Nick All-Stars over-hyped release tempering expectations for Multiversus). 0:40 - Isn't Shrek Superslam more of a Power Stone clone? Ironically, I feel PSASBR would have been better suited to such a thing given Sony's alignment with the rise of 3D gaming. 2:53 - As the only original character so far, Reindog's mechanics are perfectly designed to show off the teamwork emphasis of Multiversus. Very clever overall! 7:07 - Nick All Stars not being free-to-play wouldn't be as much of an issue if it at least had plenty of single player content or variety of modes (in terms of a game overall; not just a competitive scene). It doesn't though, focusing on multiplayer and online much like Multiversus but at a larger entry cost. It's only advantage really is that it's available on Switch. 8:42 - I'm glad this is a balanced coverage of Multiversus that does point out some criticism to it.
