💀 How my two female guppies escaped from death I recently noticed two deformed female guppies (accepting name suggestions) in my stock guppy tub and realized they escaped from being euthanized - thanks to their head indents. I euthanize deformed baby guppies with these characteristics: 1. Scoliosis 2. Blind 3. Unusual buoyancy 4. Missing eyes/ fins I do this because deformed guppies are typically short-lived and have stunted growth. When these two females were babies, their head indents weren’t visible- so when they went into the stock tub, I wasn’t able to see their side view until they grew up. Since this trait doesn’t seem to harm them negatively, I’ll be keeping them in my Walstad snail haven bowl until I can get another tank cycled for them. This way, if they give birth the babies won’t be able to pass on this gene 😅 Portals & duckweed available at FishPortals.com! 🌱

Fun fact, Fish and amphibians produce a lot of eggs when reproducing because they are fertilized externally; the large amount of eggs laid acts almost like an insurance policy to increase the chances that some will survive. A female fish or amphibian will typically release eggs in the water where males can then fertilize them.

I've had a verrrrry weird deformed Guppy come up once. They were born without any sex organs to begin with, so no big belly or gonopodium 😮 Just a slender colourless body and fins, and very skinny fish overall. It sadly had issues with swimming bladder too and usually moved around with little skips, but learned to stay afloat for longer durations of time as time went by. Despite its disabilities it just kept growing bigger and bigger, and stopped at about 2.5cm. It also had a golden tinted body, and couple of its healthy brothers and sisters did too, while some were standard grey. Strangest Guppy that I've ever seen for sure, bless. The dented head actually looks really cute. When an animal is deformed but the deformity doesnt effect its quality of life I always worry that people will see the deformity, think its interesting, and try to breed for it. Dont do this. Just because you think a deformity is cute, that animals shape is nonstandard for a reason and if that trait is targetted it could have severe, painful, and generally inhumane impacts on the animal. Do not distort an animals genetics for an aesthetic feature. Ik that there are many breeds of fish and every other domestic pet that have had this type of eugenics done to them, and for the record I hate that to. This pet owner seems to be doing a very good job at making for deformities that hurt the animal are not selected for.

It's from inbreeding. Guppies take a long time to show negative traits from inbreeding. But because you have glass belly guppies, there's already less if a gene pool. I'd suggest finding some unrelated males to add in and after a few months those deforms should go away.

I just recently lost my favorite fish Nemo, a cory catfish that I raised from accidental eggs. He was messed up for as long as I could see him, missing his left eye, left nostril, and his mouth was twisted to the side, and so I assumed he would struggle and not make it very long. Imagine my surprise that he not only survived, but *thrived!* He outlived his parents and three siblings by YEARS. He even made it through a bout of popeye to make it to somewhere around 6 years, which is pretty good for a cory. Little dude was a survivor and I loved him for it. I obviously wouldn't have bred him purposefully, but I'm really glad I gave him the chance to live his life, because he seemed pretty happy with it.

Imagining if my parents had this mind set. I know, I know, humans aren't the same but 👀.
@Alalea17
@Alalea17 11 месяцев назад
But this mindset affects how we treat humans... so actually nazi Era in Germany was this... but with humans. And they ended 250000 disabled lifes. I'm not saying that fish are like humans in all ways, but the problem lies in the way we think about what is normal. Disability is normal. Mutations are a must for evolution and that what we call disability because SOCIETY thinks it's less worth or isn't accommodated for those needs, is simply a part of Mutation. (At least genetic disabilities). We are evolution, we are an essential part and not the other end of a binary of disabled and ablebodied.
@snakewithapen5489
@snakewithapen5489 7 месяцев назад
@Alalea17 The difference is that humans have social support systems, and we love one another. FISH DO NOT. Disabled fish are simply not equivocable to disabled people. A blind child human would starve to death and die just as easily as a blind fish, if not for the fact that we are a compassionate species that cares for our young. Deformities like that are not 'normal', in the sense that they are typical for a population. They do happen often, but they are naturally bred out by natural selection. Nature doesn't care about human ethics- yes, mutations are normal, but they are only sometimes good. The good ones get passed on, while the negative ones die out. That is the way of things. Humans can live wonderful lives regardless of any deformity because we are ingenuitive and helpful, but many animals don't have the ability to provide assistance for those in their community that need it. We can't apply this mindset to humans because it is horribly immoral due to people having free will and sentience, but it is also equally harmful to the genetic health of a population overall to apply human morals to animals. Especially if you're being an ethical breeder and trying to produce pet animals that have the best chance of success at life.

So the fish is able to perform perfectly fine The only thing is it doesn't look pretty then it's not really deformed.

I guess she defines culling as the euthanizing of healthy guppies, not of deformed or blind fish who will be attacked constantly by the other fish (which she didnt mention) or be able to compete for food or protect themselves

I usually feed my deformed fry to my predatory fish.. Either way some fish has to die for him to eat and the deformed fish can't be left alive, so its a win win

Also, it wouldn't hurt them to set up a "disability" tank so they can live together. They won't fight each other and won't have such a hard time with guppies without deformities.

The issue is breeding. Even if they'd be far away, they'd still breed for those bad traits.

@@margaritaschuyiervanrensse7450why not have two separate tanks? One for males and one for females? Or give the disabled fish away to people who want them and would care for them?
@moonfish3638
@moonfish3638 10 месяцев назад
@@queerbotanicalqueeneople don’t want the fish, they die quickly and struggle to eat even with food placed in front of them. There are deformed fish in every batch, it’s how nature designed them. The cost and time needed to care for multiple separate tanks of deformed fish isn’t realistic for people. The reason why fish have so many babies at once is because most of them die before reaching adulthood. In nature, they are naturally culled, but because of the tank environment, people have to do it themselves.

@RhiannontheCinderacetrainer
@@Amy_The_unbearded they can stunt the fish and they can restrict oxygen levels. I'm glad to see that you're interested though! What kind of fish are you thinking of keeping? As a good way to get back into keeping them tropical would be a good start since they are easy to keep and not as dirty as goldfish, but it is good to do your research so you can see what fish can and can't be kept together
