How Did Napoli Become So Good?

In the last three seasons, SSC Napoli have finished 7th, 5th, and 3rd, and last summer they lost key players such as Dries Mertens, Lorenzo Insigne, David Ospina, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Fabian Ruiz.
Consequently, a lot of people were predicting that Napoli would struggle to qualify for the Champions League, but with new heroes like Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Luciano Spalletti has inspired the club from Naples to their first Serie A title since 1990.
So in this documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at Napoli's rise under eccentric owner Aurelio De Laurentiis since going bankrupt, how they won their first scudetto since Diego Maradona's departure over 30 years ago, and why perhaps we ought to have seen it coming all along.

Diego Simeone´s son is also playing at Napoli this season, and scored his first Champions League goal, which made him cry during his celebration since it always looked like an impossible dream for someone who had a career in mid to low table clubs up to that point. Napoli´s truly the working class club. They have to work twice as hard for their successes, but that´s why they taste ten times sweeter than those of the big clubs.

I watched Napoli's first game this season it was a Monday game away at Hellas Verona and I saw some guy named Kvara starting and honestly I was questioning why isn't Raspadori starting as he was great at Sassuolo or maybe even Simeone who was class at Verona. But Kvara guy played so good it was an amazing performance. Then he scored a banger vs Monza in the next game. And it was known that this guy can be a world beater

Forza Napoli! Growing up in England, Italian football was all over our screens in the 90s. Fiorentina's flamboyant Nintendo shirts and Batistuta inspired me then - and Mazzarri & Sarri's Napoli teams reignited my love. So happy the perennial nearly-men have pulled it off again (Spaletti included).

As an Inter fan, I'm so happy for Spalletti. During his time at Inter, he had to deal with a lot of locker room drama and still found a way to rally the troops and get us back to back champions league qualifications, something that we didn't achieve before him for many years. I'll always like him

Its unreal that Serie A has 5 teams left in all European Competitions yet none of the top two are involved innit. 4 different champions in 4 seasons in Serie A, its by far the most competitive league amongst the top 5. Hopefully Italian FA realizes the potential rather than being boomers at their job

Well, Napoli and Lazio were involved until recently. Napoli and Milan were drawn to eliminate each other unfortunately but it could have gone either way if I'm honest, Milan definitely has the European pedigree but is not like Napoli didn't show his control and dominance in the games. Lazio was object of very bad luck: everyone in their group ended up with 8 points and they got eliminated by a goal difference of one goal (then they did perform poorly in Conference League). So it goes even more to your point: Serie A potentially could have had more than 5 teams in Europe.

@Charles Your argument is not even coherant. Serie A does not have good football its a mickey mouse league by any standards the fact Napoli can run away with the league without a challenge cuz everyone else is doing so poor is not proof that Serie A is even remotely good. Your argument about oil money is not a dig at PL cuz oil money or not PL was always bigger than Serie A, its none argument. Oil money would never come to Serie A due to socialist polices that have destroyed the game and quality the simple fact 95% don't even own their own stadiums proof Serie A is a poor and low quality football game that truly has no passion. Look at the performance of Serie A last 20 years tells how bad the league has been.

Last sunday the Maradona was filled to the brim. 60.000 fans were chanting for 90 minutes straight, waving flags and tens of thousands more were waiting in plazas and outside the ground, while obviously millions were glued to the tv, waiting for a victory against salernitana that could have started the party. Osimhen was nutmegged by Dia, that then went on to score an amazing goal, meaning that the game finished 1-1. When the final whistle blew, Victor bursted into tears. He had been supernaturally good thus far, and he gave everything in that game. Most players would head straight to the dressing room, but Victor didn't. That shows you how much this group of players loves the city back. They could leave this summer, but much like Lavezzi, Cavani, Hamsik, Mertens, Insigne, Maggio and many, many more, their home will forever be here, as they showed a love that only a neapulitan could have for Napoli

If Luton Town win promotion to the EPL via the play offs I suppose you could do a video on their drastic fall and then rise through the divisions from when they fell dropped from the 2nd tier all the way down to the 5th tier of the conference in succesive seasons and have since climed all the way back up' of course Luton were top flight regulars just before the foundation of the Premier League and were actually among the original 22 clubs that negotiated to break away from the football League but they were relegated in 1992 which was a season before the EPL started so never actually got to play in it

I remember we just sat down and watched and i was fucking hooked i found it so fast paced compared to American football and more visually appealing then basketball. Napoli won and from that moment on i did everything in my power to learn anything i could about the sport. Research the greats go back and watch thousands of hours worth of games. The way I've always watched sports was i cheer for the players i like not a team i don't live anywhere were these teams reside so i don't see the point. but napoli was the exception. i endured a couple years of mid teams until this happened this year. safe to say on paper this year i thought we would be a lot worse but i was wrong

"it felt like the heart was wrentched from the club" couldn't have been said better, the players I grew up loving all left in a instant. surreal. only wish insigne could've won with us that man is a goat.

Naples is one of the craziest cities I’ve ever been too… the club is just as mental, but they are LOVED in Naples in a way that I can‘t compare to anywhere else in Europe

The historic Euro 2020 campaign greatly helped Italy for developing a football. Although the 2022 World Cup was such an embarrassing because they lost to North Macedonia, the club at least fared better. In the last season, Roma won the Conference League. Now, up to 5 Italian clubs are still in contention. One of the Champions League finalists went to Milan and both Roma and Juventus had a chance to stage an all-Italian Europa League Final this year.

5th request: @HITCSevens Idea for episode: the 7 players currently playing in the lowest division in England to have played (or still playing) senior international football. Eg Knory Scott plays for Bermuda + Hastings Utd (level 7); Anthony Jeffrey plays for Guyana + Billericay Town (7). I bet you can find someone below Level 7 🙂

I am genuinely delighted for Napoli. Let's hope they win a Champions League before most of their players leave 🩵🩵🩵

These guys grow up in Napoli(except the new signings). They get married, have their first kids in Naples. It becomes a 2nd home to them. Mertens owns a house in Naples, he was just there when Galatasaray gave their players a 2 day break. I remember when Matteo Politano(A die hard Roma fan) didn't want to come to Napoli. Lorenzo Insigne had to talk him into it. Now he bleeds blue and white and doesn't want to leave. His kids speak Neapolitan. Ziekinski also got married and had his first child while at Napoli. Meret the same. All these boys are gonna be legends for years to come. Even if we win more scudetti or *knock on wood* in Europe(my dream is to win the UCL), this squad will always be remembered. Great video Alfie. You did your research for this one. A lot of the points you made(especially about ADL) were only reported by Italian speaking news sources. Grazie for sharing and Go Tigers!(I decided to play with Hull City about 7, 8 years ago in PES and have been following them ever since)

As a Milan fan, I hope Napoli manage to keep hold of these gems, except ofc if Milan buys one of them, which won't happen and even if we do I hope not Kvara as it would be a crime to bench either him or Leao. I just hope they remain so they keeps the league competitive and bring back the glory days of Serie A.

There really should be a Coventry City video on HITC Sevens. We’ve seen Luton & I really would of expected a Coventry City one by now. From SISU and the clubs fall into L2 to the remarkable job Mark Robins has done and now the new owner. It’s a really good story.

Although I'm a Milan for 30 years, I can't tell you how happy I am wating this Napoli team, standing toe to toe with Man-City, s the best club in the world, that plays the best football in the world, along with Man City! I know Osimhen has been given an offer of 8 or 9 millions per season, and t... I hope he accepts it and stay in Napoli fo rat least 2 more seasons! It'll be great to see them again in Serie A,winning the Scudetto and attacking UCL trophy!

It's a work that was built through many years, they were a Serie C side not even 15 years ago.
@theraggededgeonboardfastes8461
All astute points: of note they eschewed the 2 forward system from the start of the era & the center forward in their 3 forward system since has been a voracious presser beginning with Cavani...

I’d be interested to see who your most promising transfer picks would be from outside the top five european leagues into them will be for the coming season. Seeing as certainly here in Switzerland a move to germany or italy is basically mandatory for breaking into the national team.
