How Did Nintendo Make The 2DS So Cheap?

@LukeOof Please read comments you respond to.... They kept both cameras for games and apps that require two cameras to run properly, it has nothing to do with people actually taking pictures.

maybe nintendo wanted to make more money so they decided to make a Cheaper 2ds to push sales. it's a good approach since they're demanding less money from the consumer

Indeed, this is a 1st from what I've seen. And as I expected, 1 screen but not full pixels doing their trick, rather 1 glass panel with 2 internal LCDs. I would even suspect it having 2 different controllers on the one bottom chip-on-glass, one for top and another for bottom one, given the 2 flat cables. I suspect this is ALSO to cut costs, instead of designing a controller that would have 400x480 and sum the two signals from the CPU, just literally make a 3DS with 3D slider hard off and both screens combined into one glass, save for top one's resolution being cut to half.

@@Kalvinjj I doubt the top screen includes the parallax barrier for the 3D.

@@No_True_Scotsman of course it doesn't, that would be unnecessary added cost, specially given it has the pixels only for 400x240 at the top as well. What I meant with 3D slider hard off is just that it internally has the connections for it on the ICs but shorted to ground (or VCC whatever it understands as off), and on software it knows it's a 2DS.

And Switch Lite isn't even cheap, considering the really outdated 2015 hardware in 2023. Should be £119 tops today.

Executer 66 I actually disagree with that. The switch is okay without hinges, but it's a lot less portable. If you want to carry around a switch, you need a bag in most cases. The same with the 2ds

I still think the 2DS was kind of a weird decision. Removing the clamshell design and taking away the main draw of the 3DS. Then the XL came out and they made the 2DS look even weirder. I upgraded to the Hylian Shield edition only because of how it looks despite not really buying 3DS games anymore.

Don't do it, very fragile system, I took great care of them 1 broke I don't know how, the second broke from light pressure in the middle from my knee, as I went to reach something across the sofa... inside it's case too. I couldn't believe it, but the plastic over the screen is very thin. Bought a new 3ds XL recently, feels much sturdier, feels better too.

I think that's the main reason they released the 2ds XL. Everyone I know (Including myself) thought the weird flat design of the 2ds was the worst feature.

Not at all. I’m pretty sure that after a while, everyone treated the 3D as a throwaway gimmick (I certainly did), and the main thing about it was the better hardware and the Circle Pad. What really bugged me was without a hinge (I can understand complaints about the hinges breaking, since that happened to me), you can’t stick the thing in our pocket and carry it around.

PS Vita is great, also get one you can hack and load up emulators on, it would make it 100x better. It is the best system to hack right now for emulation. The PS Vita is considered dead at this point and they are dirt cheap in stores, so nobody cares if you hack them, as long as you dont pirate current games like Stardew Valley, its good.

Yes! A friend of mines has the slim one and i saw the 1000 model in gamestop for $159, it was tempting but i know i can find one cheaper so im trying to be patient, my switch and ps4 spiderman will be soaking up my game time anyways

I just bought this for my 6 year old because all the ds light somehow end up with broken hinges, and the best part he can still use all his old games.

That’s the great thing about Nintendo, their handhelds are very durable and very cheap. The original game boy survived a bomb during the gulf war, and the DS survived a trek up Mount Everest, even though all the other electronics died during the trek. I feel like Nintendo could start selling phones and sell a lot of them because of how durable their products are.

DjSamination Interestingly, the 2ds can run SNES just fine using an emulator. You have to have custom firmware, but it does show the 2ds does have enough power to run them just fine.

It can run using homebrew emulators (need CFW). Also, Nintendo said they couldn't get GBA emulation right on 3DS, but look at the GBA VC for Ambassador Program, they all work just fine. In actuallity, the 3DS DOES HAVE some of the GBA hardware still, like the processor ARM7 (which is mainly used for better compatibility with NDS games).

Officially the 2ds can't run superNES titles, only systems that says "new" in front of it can. So the new 2ds XL for example can use SNES titles from the virtual consoles, but not the og 2ds. Lol, I called BS right away when Nintendo did this as a way to market more "New" 3ds/2ds systems, even the GBA had a port of super mario world.

Docked-only or handheld only isn't going to happen for the Switch. There is first-party software and hardware that already exists that demands the Switch be a modular device. It looks REALLY bad having to slap a sticker on something claiming incompatability on a product that came after its launch (in case that sentence wasn't super clear, I'm saying throwing a sticker on say the Labo Variety Kit that says "Not Compatible with Nintendo Switch Uberdok or Nintendo Switch Miini" when the Variety Kit's been out for a year already shows an incredible lack of foresight). This is an entirely separate issue than having games only be playable on a theoretical Switch Pro that keeps the same form factor as the current Switch, as the Pro would still keep retro-compatibility with the rest of the Switch lineup.

I expect more to get an only portable version outside Japan in one or 2 years . Maybe with some additional cheaper dock “ substitute “ as optional buy . Could be only a smaller version of the dock . Using less plastic.

1, 2, Switch and Super Mario Party have minigames that only work in Tabletop Mode (handheld with Joy-Cons removed) but are part of games designed for as much screen real estate as possible outside of those couple of minigames. Basically every local multiplayer game doesn't really work as handheld only, 4 player Mario Kart is nearly impossible in handheld and I imagine 8 player Smash would be even harder to tell what is going on (but these games still work excellently as handhelds when playing local WiFi/online or against CPUs).

The selling point of the Switch is taking it on the go, this would defeat the purpose of it. Although i see your point, maybe people only want to play it in TV mode, so for a cheaper price, it could come bundled with a Pro Controller instead of joycons to take advantage of the fact that it will be a lot cheaper.

Ismaeel Sher you can use the same account just like a having a Switch and a 3DS. You can send games from your 3DS to your 2DS but you sadly can't have them on both on the same time.
