How did timber help fight two world wars?
World War I transformed the Northwest timber industry to ensure the supply of Sitka spruce for building airplanes to fight the Red Baron. With men away at the front, women were tapped to work in the woods during both world wars - the so-called "Lumberjills." Not only did spruce help fight the Nazis, logging the trees made a major impact on labor in the woods.
