The API 2500+ is a famous bus compressor used to create amazing drum sounds and can work amazing on the master bus for final mixes too. In this video we compare the API 2500+ to the API 2500 plugin from waves. Is the hardware better than the plugin? In this video we dive in and find out!

The plugin sounds muddy compared to the hardware

The hardware API doesn't sound anything like any plugin if you push it into generating more harmonics. The plugins all handle the release time really weirdly too, vs the hardware. However, the UAD and Lindell versions are WAY better sounding than the decades-old Waves plugin. The Waves has always been crap.

The hardware sounds way better than the waves plugin, and slightly better than the UAD one. I have a 2500 and will usually mix w/ the UAD plugins then swap it out w/ the real hardware at the end.

The Nebula Live analog Sampled API 25th Anniversery Unit Destoys UAD and the regular Unit but in total its going to run you $450 Opposed to $3800 for the regular unit and the $10,000 for the physical API 25th anv. unit

I feel the same and got the hardware. I do use UAD API 2500 sometimes and think it is good for a plugin. Best/Mathias

I may be biased since I use a few hardware gear in my mixes myself, but as you mention, they are tools, knowing which one to use is the key. Coming from having electronics as my background, analog for me has more infinite value and the small component tolerances what makes it unique and most times better. Whereas digital is 1 + 1 = 2. Good content.

the Nebula API 25th Anv. Unit by Alex B Engineering kind of makes the regular over priced $3800 Unit and UAD not really a big deal anymore Even the Plugin Alliance SBC is pretty close to your physical Unit If your gona use a Plugin Shoot out I dare you To shoot that out against Acustica Audio's Pink 4 2412 Comp and the Plugin Alliance SBC they will be "Pretty Close" to your physical Unit outside of the "Analog Hamonic Distortion that the real unit and the Nebula API 2500 has"

The Waves plug in version is like 20 years old with old technology. A better test would have been having the hardware against the UAD 2500 plug in.

I definitely don’t like the Waves plugin, I have it a couple of years and end up almost never using it. Alright I have a lot of hardware compressors which I love on the drums but I sometimes use plugins too. I love the Waves DBX160, the Kramer Pie compressor and the LA2A on snare works great too. For drumbus I like the Shadowhills or the SPL Iron which both sound amazing 😊

The hardware sounds good I use it on my drum bus I have the Nebula 50th Anniversery API the Higher End Yellow Unit it sounds really really good compared to Digital Plugins from what Im hearing my 50th Anv API sounds even more open and musical than your "Standard Unit" the Commerical Player N4 Plugin is $400 The Live Sampled and Impulse Response Program for Nebula 50.00 us from what I been hearing all over the internet and having analog gear myself and already having the PINK 4 (Acutica Audio's) 2412 Comp their API convolution Tech Version the API 25th Anv. seems to be a better version of it I really wanted the API 2500 in Nebula Form but Im glad they did the upgraded one it was worth the wait On Drum Bus its Incredible

Wouldn't leaving the analog setting off in the plugin not saturate the same and leave out any of the clipping it's trying to mimic? Great video though, thank you for the comparison

Great question, the "Analog" on these waves plugin doesnt add saturation, it crazily enough, just adds analog noise. It used to be on by default and you can imagine the noise build up if you had these waves plugins on every channel. Crazy stuff.

@@diyrecordingstudio yeah well that's not the case, speaking about the whole waves api series. It does what the guy that commented supposed, Just like he said it simulate (also quite in a good way) the clipping

The source material in this video is low quality, for a better comparison you should better tracks/ a better mix. shooting out whether or plugin or hardware sounds better on a crappy mix is like seeing whether your trashed car looks better with new rims or not, you’re missing the big picture.
