I really appreciate your subjective demo of the Unfairchild but when I watched Eric Valentine's video he showed the curves of the original Fairchild as well as the other emulations and he actually extended the highs & lows on his hardware & the software. It has so many attack & release option I would think you could make it less grabby. Hope you post another video after you work with it for a while 😁
I have a pair of Tegeler Myth EQ500, how would you compare that with this EQ here, especially on points with transparency ? Further I see 2 slots for Opamps, is there anything to it (as extension) ?
Honestly I don’t see the hype in soothe2 so I definitely can’t see the hype here. Soothe2 isn’t terrible but something to me makes the vocal seem fragile after using it
All good, apart from mentioning Waves, they suck and nothing they do is worthy of buying anything from them. If you've ever been burned by Waves, their Update Plan, the subscription model con or their old code you already bought refaced and re GUI'd and sold back to you as a "new" plugin; no thanks. There is nothing they could do to make me buy another plugin from them. Not saying all the Waves plugins are garbage, some are, some are very garbage, but some are OK and pretty good. That's not the main issue and there are better alternatives. The UAD Fairchild is way better than the Waves thing though.
I love Studio one and the only crappy thing about the 7 is if you use Artist from buying an interface you will lose it which is not cool. I have the Studio Live 16A rack mixer as my main interface and it is great but I need more analog outputs so I'm getting the Motu 16A but Motu is backordered to 2025 which pisses me off. I put down 1200 bucks deposit and I've been waiting months and there are months to go until I get it. Not cool.
Great episode! This is quickly becoming one of my favorite channels. Like the news format. Weaver beats is the only other format like this but its geared more to electronic beatmakers, as opposed to mixers. Love this!
I think CLA has a great mixing signature made over the decades. I don’t think he would be without a mixing desk, he is a promoter for his use of the SSL console and I wouldn’t hesitate to guess that SSL is building his custom desk already. His desk being that many years old is probably running in more and more maintenance costs so I could imagine SSL is building a new custom desk for him. ( need some money to fund that good time to sell unused gear )
Note* The UTA Unfairchild plugin has been updated since the making of this video, with Eric Valentine adressing some of the issues mentioned in this video and others. link here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JPVjQ8H7XW0.htmlsi=fAogGybAINwSwZZd
I'm a studio one user for a long time. It's hard to see any actual value in the new version, and the new pricing scheme just doesn't make much sense to me. It would make more sense, to me anyway, if the ATMOS and video stuff were in another parallel version. Really, I dunno that there's been any real reason to upgrade since version 4 for most people. I stayed with 2.6 for like 10 years, and really it was just the fat channel stuff that got me to "upgrade", and that was out of a lack of interest in buying other companies' versions of the same hardware emulations that would require me to hold my nose and deal with subscriptions or onerous copy protection schemes. Meanwhile I'm purple with envy (though not as purple as you ;) )at the people snapping up the DIYRE Neve clones. I'd love to build some. It's comical how much more there is to them than the CAPI pres.
Hahaha! thanks Maggie. Yeah peterson from DIYRE just did a video explaining the extra gain stages of a 1073 mic preamp. I agree with you regarding the atmos stuff. it's not necessary for everyone, thats for sure.
Eric Valentine has come out with an update to the plugin that addresses some of the issues you talk about. And pricing has been halved. Good on him for both initiatives, but have to say I am a bit disappointed by what are essentially f-ups. By the way, he has said the plugin in stereo form is two 660s as he prefers the 660 sound. Still, a partnership with Kiive Audio / Mixland (16x over sampling!) and some further updates probably means it is worth a buy.
Yeah i caught this today while i was in final edit of this video. Maybe they should have had more beta testing? the no proper makeup gain dial threw me. They fixed that apparently too. I'm more disappointed with the sound i was getting. I might have to give it another crack though! Thanks for the comment.
How does anyone turn the gain up all the way without it clipping? I want to get as much saturation color as possible but it ends up way too loud even with the output trimmed as much as possible. Using a Neve 511 and the API 512c. Just curious what you or others do, thanks!
Hi Anna, excellent question. unfortunately the API 512c doesn't have a volume trim, just input gain. That's why people often prefer the CAPI clones of API preamps as they all have trim knobs, so you can push the input gain and dial back the output of the preamp to get more saturation. The RND 511 does have a trim but only -6dB at most which isn't much. You could use an inline pad before the preamp so that way you can push the preamp harder. Something like this should do the trick. www.mannys.com.au/hosa-att448-xlr3f-to-xlr3m-input-attenuator?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwu-63BhC9ARIsAMMTLXQhXNbS8rlUXcCOBkb95hK7ji6nE4eF84gy6cyWyYLl1fyRpHYY3iwaAvWJEALw_wcB
This is a really, really cool company. They have claimed that this is more of a rethinking of a GML 8200 as opposed to a sontec. Im not sure why they marketed it as a "sontec" since there are so so many Sontec clones out there already
Yeah good point. Either way the EQ is pretty awesome. They have this 500 series unit, which I'm using all the time. They also have a 19" rack unit with the full 5 bands.
It is an interesting project, it makes the mike sounds considerable better than the factory version. I think the mod might worth the time an effort. However it is far from the U87 sound. Saying that it sounds like a U87 is kind of a huge claim. Sorry for the exsesive honesty. But is only my oppinion, perhaps I am extremely used to the Neuman sound that I can detect the difference. But the majority of the people won't hear the difference. The mjority of todays engineers don't pay attention to the instrument response! An for the quality of the singers that we have nowadays, do you really think a mike will make any difference in performance quality, when the majority cannot even sing in tune? You can do it with an SM57, a copy of the "flow" from some supposedly famous engineer and a bandwith "vaccum cleaner" such Autotune or melodyne. Just make everyone sounds the same W/O identity, like the B-9 the Robinson's Robot from the Lost In Space TV show from the 70'. People is already used to that shitty sound. Thanks for the post.
I have a video coming soon comparing the modded mic versus a real u87. I've shot them out in a few situations. Sonically they are way more similar than you are assuming. You might be surprised.
*There is absolutely no need or excuse for the use of foul language: IT IS GRATUITOUSLY OFFENSIVE to many who may view this video, because people of faith also have an interest!*
The bucket and Yamaha approaches seem significantly different. The Jaycar driver has a resonant frequency (Fs) of 50Hz closely matching your measurement. This value may drop as the spider breaks in. The NS10 speaker, from the old measurements I googled, appears to have an impedance peak at about 80Hz which I believe corresponds with the driver's Fs and is close to what you measured. So if you want the Yamaha sound it might be worthwhile to find a driver with a similar Fs. I also wonder what impact the bucket has nearly sealing off the back of the driver. I was under the belief that the Yamaha is not sealed. In loudspeakers, dipole speakers (not sealed, not ported) have much more rapid low frequency roll-off. It would be interesting to see how the Jaycar driver measures without the bucket.
Yeah the yamaha has a mesh head at the back. I have plans to do further tests and revisions and mods later on. I actually prefer the 50Hz bump of this speaker but there are some improvements i can also make for sure!
@@diyrecordingstudio I was talking about the Neve Clone, their Neve clone is better than the native Neve Reissue in some parts (Torx power supply, stepped resistance attenuators etc) when you hear them back to back it sound better than the re issue even, look it up ! 499$ 🤣🤣 Thats why I said Audioscape didn't get it at all, bad move to copy Behringer line up with this, it cost more than 3x the price and I doubt its 3x better
Thank you, It's an excellent mic, if you can build it yourself I can't recommend it enough. They also do pre-built ones. It's my go to vocal mic for sure!
@@diyrecordingstudio Ohhhh ya that would be fun! Many people share my thoughts as well. IK tape machines have a really good reputation and many say they are the closest to the real thing you will find. I particularly like the A80 but they are all great.
@@va941 Cool, glad you think so. UA tape machines are ok but don’t sound like real tape sorry. Maybe you’ve never heard real tape before but it’s a very very very subtle effect. All UA tape machines are pretty exaggerated. Oxide is the closest I’ve heard to what real tape machines sound like. IK really nails the subtleties and compression effects. I use UA tape machines from time to time when I want a more colored sound but when it comes to what actual tape sounds like IK is the king sorry to disappoint. Appreciate your snarky, lack of knowledge, passive aggressive comment tho! Have a great day! 🙃
@@matt_nyc_audioengineer cool, happy you think so, IK tapes are shit, they do nothing, if you want light touch, go for softube tape, or UA ampex, ik is a shit brand an youre just salty you bought their shit products, its ok to try to justify it to yourself, just stop scamming people to buy in to their BS with you. Loved your snarky, bad faith comeback, bruv, peace and love to you ❤😘 Ps, none of them sound like actual tape machines, maybe youve just had access to shit cheap ones, cope harder.
Hi Mitch. Yep, I have the complete set of T-Racks 5 and contemplating getting T-Racks 6. I use them regularly in my projects. Although I feel they are a bit CPU heavy, for my ears, they sound good. You get about 50+ various processors and with V6, you get 60, covering every aspect of processing and effects. I have been trying the UAD Century on vocals and I find it quite musical on vocals. The opto (emulated) compressor is not the same as LA2A, but it does do a great job of being transparent at low settings.
I think this is awesome but is it possible to route things completely separately for more control? For example, I’d like my desktop audio (or audio in ableton) to play on a seperate channel kinda like with how you can use voicemeeter aux to route different types of audio through obs. I like having the control and sometimes I like changing the levels of my voice or the levels of other things im playing without affecting other things.
Wonder how that spring reverb pedal would sound if used in a mixing context.. Radial extc 500 module to send and return to the pedal. I’ve got a couple of pedals I use that way which is fun
Good vid, just correcting you on the century: The compressor is not the la2a, and the plug-in in general is not an emulation of a specific hardware piece. Tip for anyone grabbing the century: it has ultra low headroom, so don’t push it too hard unless you want lots of saturation.
Yeah for sure, thanks for the info. Just to add, I actually didnt say it WAS an LA-2a. I just said it was an opto leveller and that the century layout was similar to the 610 channel strip. Never said it was an emulation, just commented on the similarities.
Is the century based on the LA-610? If that’s true, I’ve used both and I did not get that vibe. I actually liked the century a lot more. I could be completely off, though.
T-Racks were a good value with their buy one get 30ish free deals. Their SSL comp has a unique Grit button that softens peaks in an occasionally useful way. The tape emu's are good for plugins, but I prefer hardware in that area; currently using HRK 552s, but also looking to Louder Than Liftoff's Colour-C and the Sound Skulptors. There aren't any good AB comparisons of Skulptor's emu's vs plugins or other hardware. If you made that video... I'd watch it. Ofc, if you made any other video, I'd watch it too! 😊
Awesome to know, thanks. I'll be checking them out! I'll definitely have some demos of the tape saturators really soon, just finishing off some other content at the moment.
Problem with IK Multimedia is they suffer from an overly popular image. In my country, you can even buy IK’s stuff at the supermarket. But compared to other « pro » labelled companies, I don’t think IK Multimedia is doing a worst job. I mean, why would IK’s engineers would be worst than UAD’s engineers ?
I am waiting on delivery of the behringer 609, which I pre-ordered... looking forward to getting it, more within my budget than the Audioscape😕 I have the UA Century plugin, have to say it's been good 👍
@@diyrecordingstudio I like the 609 because it’s different from what I have so an extra color on the table. I would buy it again. I also have the 1273 and I really like that one, I think they’re pretty good for the money.
@@diyrecordingstudio Haha, I think maybe just adjust the intensity of the light in your studio. You looked human colored in your other vids, just nicely lavender in this one. It was kinda funny.
The man is correct. When I first opened this strip I was automatically and initially overwhelmed by all the dials and switches. I was not familiar with API hardware and to be fair that was my fault. It was hard to read on a 27 inch screen, my fault again I had to use a pair of dollar store magnifiers to read the tiny print...however, like anything else it is simply a matter of familiarity and this became familiar quickly. I should also add that I am a fan of UAD and they put out some terrific things
SmartGain is awesome for quick and dirty recording. I think it's only game changy for getting drum levels faster... or even just getting a great base level to work from. Why the hate? I was laughing when you spoke on what you won't let a computer do for you. We do everything machines tell us from trusting the speeds, times, & temps of things, to the monitoring of our health and wellbeing. Sounds like your issue is with the marketing.
