I always stress about grouping my cards by positioning or by unit type.

Since I don't do that, would that cause routing units to immediately leave and is that desirable?

@@MDMDMDMDMDMDMDMDMD It's most effective against melee focused enemies like orcs and khorne because they have to bunch up making spells easy, and also great against cav because they can't flank and you'll always be braced against them. However, corner camping will send your whole army to death or a rout should the enemy have artillery or worse yet, dwarven aoe explosive damage, so it's best to hide some cavalry in trees away from your army so you can rush their long range back line stuff while they're engaged in the corner.

@@MDMDMDMDMDMDMDMDMD makes it so you cant get surrounded when vastly outnumbered, also good for protecting missile units/wizards provided they have room to fire. It struggles vs artillery, missile units, and any AoE abilities/monsters. Playing the corner as some races is very strong but not perfect. Instant routing is bad but doesnt make much of a difference when battles are super lopsided and routing is gg anyways. its a bad crutch of mine coming from twr2 where 6 pikemen phalanxed up in the corner could take out thousands.

i can only recommend to everyone reading this: give yourself the rule that you aren't allowed to use the map edges to corner camp. Only actual terrain, like stone-formations etc. Makes the game far more interesting, and sometimes losing an army to an overwhelming foe brings massive spice to the campaign. Trust me, once the enemy murdered one of your armies it's going to be far more fun to defeat them, and victory will be so much sweeter.

@@XpVersusVista I mean, the game already cheats massively throwing 3 full stacks at you when you could not afford half army in the same circumstances.And even if you clear those up they rebuild those 3 armies in 3 turns so... there is no more realiable strategy to deal with overwhelming forces. In TTW3 they started adding scenery in the edges of the maps, specially cathayan maps, and some bottlenecks of terrain so you can basically cornercamp without having to think about the absurdity of having two white magical lines that prevents the enemy from flanking you. Thats makes me think that CA is completely OK with people corner camping.

But of course! And sending in the same army I used to defeat Kostaltyn multiple times to beat a couple of Gnoblars and one unit of Ogre Bulls.

@@AshenVictor Imagine if they just made the map so large that getting to the corner with infantry before cav reaches you was not possible. Or artillery before infantry would reach you.

Though it is technically false now since Legend mentioned several times in his streams that doomstacks aren't as good now and mixed armies are preferable.

The corner is the best military alliance I ever had the pleasure to be a part of.

Obviously you play however you want, but the best part about total war games are the battles. If you just wanna play a good campaign there's plenty of games that do it much better.

@@taserrr Well, I've played many startegic games, like Age of Empires, Empire Earth (kinda forgotten series) Crusader Kings or Europa Universalis. Out of all of them, Total War is my favourite in terms of the campaign experience. I enjoy battles too, of course, but the campaign side of things is way more interesting for me. If autoresolve tells decisive victory and low losses, I take it every time.

We have no choice when the AI can micromanage all their cavalry to always encircle our troops and focus the backline.

@RJMPublic That's not true. In my last campaign I had at least a hundret battles, where autoresolve predicted a decisive defeat and I only sent half of the army to the corner! That was with Yvresse and only stealthy units+generals. Full stealth breaks the ai so effective, that a fire archmage on a dragon can win most battles alone. Of course you need a ground unit(with stealth) to prevent a leadership debuff. lvl 15+ life mage, lvl15+ swordmaster of hoath, skyhawks are good for that.

Even Later in game: Legend of Total Doomstack Ultra late game: Fuck it, imma Auto Resolve and if it dies, it dies.

Turn 1: I lost 50 units instead of 49, guess im restarting the campaign Turn 20: OK set up these guys here get this army in position get this flank in ... eh i lost a couple units but its finee Turn 50: Get in the corner Turn 120: Well guess i lost my main lords army, whatever shall we do!

Have you tried just following what they do? I know AI can be naturally unpredictable in tactics, but I finished many Med2 and R2 campaigns just by doing the exact same things.

Or just use the lord to make the enemy waste all their ammo before moving in for an easy kill.

that's the 'other perfectionist' I believe.

What?! You can do that?? That would have been so useful, with the kitchensink I tend to field.

I feel vanguard does not work well because the maps are so small and does not allow you to start on the flanks, behind the enemy or outside the walls.

@@Ragatokk At least in TW:WH2 there are small slivers of space in both corners behind the enemy, where you can deploy vanguard troops. Not being able to put them outside city walls is pretty dumb, though.

Nasty Skulkers! And vanguard deployment can be amazing on most quest battles that allow deployment, some game changingly so, and certain army line ups. I usually go try to get One that hunts unseen on at least 1 lord as any and every faction I play except ones with built in VG.

That's why the bigger maps mod was 100% a necessity, even though it made for some occasionally janky terrain features that the units would clip through...

the pain is real! but what do you mean only artillery? even if i select e.g. 3 units of spearmen "a b c", their units cards are somehow arranged as "b c a"; if i directly select cards "a b c" and deploy them, they somehow deploy as "a c b". simply WTF especially if i hv a mix of units and a specific formation in mind

if you put them in a group it'll deploy them in the order of the cards.. I think edit - ya I just tested in game, I'm right, throw your artillery in a group and they'll behave the way you desire. I know it's lame you need to do that but hope that helps

You can actually make it do it. Order the cards in the way you want them to be ordered but make sure you've moved each card atleast once otherwise it won't register the order they're in. Sometimes you'll have to move a card from where you want and then back again. No need for grouping.

yeah, have that shit happend with all sorts of units. horse archers are a riotous pain in the behind when you space them out perfectly in a square and they blob into a clump and gets caught by enemy when you tell them to turn around... soo fuck horse archers.

Yeah move each at least once and don't assign them to group until AFTER.

I do that too but only if there's a lot of enemy cav / flankers and I want some reserves for line infantry.

Nah, I do it to. During my Skragg campaign, I usually had a unit of Gorgers back to defend my artillary. Make the enemy THINK it was vulnerable thanks to their Stalk and then..... BOOM! "Looks like meat's back on the menu boys!"

No, because you camp somewhere they can't reach your rear... Ideally using actual map terrain features, but corner I'd necessary... Now, when dealing with dwellers below, always gotta leave one infantry to chase off the clan rats. XD

Halberds/spear units always cover flanks, swords (if you have any) for the middle. Those flanking cav have to be dealt with somehow! XD

@@Olav_Hansen in my hef lineup (I don't usually doomstack because that gets boring), and admittedly using myriad (170+) mods, so my lineup of units is vastly broader than vanilla... I use 3 regular swordsmen (basically HEF bleakswords) for the front, plus 2 halberdiers or spears for the flank. 3-5 lords/heroes, plus usually 8/9 (either 2 lines of 4, or 3 lines of 3) archer units. My last slot or two is either a monster (I appreciate the arcane and frostheart phoenix for different reasons) or a bolt thrower to force the enemy forward... If I want to go end-game armies, the basic composition stays the same but the units get improved (swordmasters, Phoenix Guard, plus soa or similar level units from mods)

@@EagleScoutmano bleaksword is how they are called for def. Now that I think about it hef currently don't even have a bleaksword like unit.

@@Olav_Hansen exactly. The mods just call them 'swordsmen'. What's funny is, because I have so many different mods, several of them add that type/tier sword unit to the HEF lineup, but the stats are slightly different for each (including one which is a clone of spears but swaps anti large for anti infantry, two or three that are clones of bleakswords stat distribution, and one that is almost mirroring the corsairs stat distribution)

*drags unit card one slot furter to the left in a group, only to have it get yeeted all the way in the last slot, so you have to touch all other unit cards so the get yeeted in the right oder*

Also, after Placing, half that time again needs to be spend to admire your Handywork and look at how pretty the troops and formation look
