How Disney Broke Space Mountain: From the Earth to the Moon | Disneyland Paris

The original Space Mountain premiered in Magic Kingdom in 1975 and numerous other iterations have been built since. However, the most unique version was Space Mountain: From the Earth to the Moon which opened at Disneyland Paris in 1995, finally drawing in enough people for the park to achieve profitability. In today's video, I discuss how interesting the theming for the attraction used to be and chronicle its fall, from the cheap 2005 re-brand, to the permanent Star Wars overlay implemented in 2018 despite being promised something temporary.

The Paris space mountain seemed amazing and really well themed, it’s very sad to see Disney has to slap an up on everything, including this exceptional attraction.

Man I swear they didn't even get rid of the Theming, it s still themed over the OG space mountain aesthetic, the trains are the same, etc.... And then you go in and you have bank camera quality screens with star wars shit coming for some reason, I ve never seen something so disrespected 😭

I spent so many years of my life where I'd wait all year or two years specifically to go on this ride, the theming was exquisite and really beautiful, it's so sad it's not like this any more. Walking through the queue, hitting the indoor bit with the French woman speaking over the retro graphic of the coaster and how loud it got in the dark corridors just to open up into the space exploration rooms at the very end of the queue, it was such a good ride experience, shame it won't go back

It’s heartbreaking that Disney refuses to create an immersive, detailed and original attraction. I’m so sick of Disney just slapping IP’s on things that were once good. Examples; The great movie Ride at Hollywood Studios, Space Mountain at Disneyland Paris, Tower of Terror at Disneyland California, California Screaming at Disneyland California and more. Disney flourished because of their imagination and now they are losing their magic because of their lack of creativity and talent
@PoseidonEntertainment
@PoseidonEntertainment 11 месяцев назад
A little ironic for the Great Movie Ride, but I think it's a good example of how IP can be used effectively. It used its IP to celebrate cinema as an artistic industry, versus using attractions like a billboard for some nebulous "Disney" brand vessel.

It’s a weird hill to die on to claim that Mission Breakout is somehow inferior to the former DCA Tower of Terror, it is like almost objectively a more exciting experience with the overhaul of the ride system. As much as it was the ToT of my childhood with me living on the west coast, it was always a pale imitation of the original. Also Incredicoaster is _literally_ the exact same ride as California Screamin lol, even to the point that a couple of those “show scene” tunnels were already there in some capacity. You may as well say a ride is ruined because they used a slightly different shade of white to repaint it

I also miss the old Disney parks unique feel. Disney Imagineers need to be allowed to be more creative by the "powers that be" at the Disney Co. and stop treating Disney owned theme park designs like they are now going to an industry catalog like SEARS and/or IKEA to pick out new attractions that they can shoehorn into being “Disney" IP. I hope there are there still Disney Imagineers capable of expanding domestic Disney theme park theming beyond another themeless rollercoaster ride. I worry now about a total lack of creativity and originality out of every aspect of the Disney Company. Funny how it seems like Disney theme parks resorts that are not totally owned by Disney Co. but partially owned and/or not owned by Disney Co like Tokyo Disney resort , Hong Kong Disney Resort and Shanghai Disney Resort seem to do a better job with Disney theming.

When I was little I was deathly afraid of this ride because it went upside down and was in the dark. I would stick to Big Thunder Mountain as my main thrillride, and would do other stuff with my mom as my dad and sister went on Space Mountain. One year they finally managed to convince me to join them, and I was absolutely terrified as I waited in line. Of course when we arrived back into the load station I was ecstatic and wanted to ride again right away. As we went home I couldn't wait to go back and experience it many more times. Only a few months later they announced they would update the ride with Mission 2, so I never got to ride it again. Life got in the way and I never got to go back to Disneyland until only two years ago, where I did Hyperspace Mountain for the first time. Suffice to say it was fun but nothing compared to the ride it used to be. But when the cart approaches the projection of the star destroyer, and I squint my eyes, I can still see the grinning moon that's been permanently engraved in my mind ever since back then.

I remember going on the original as a kid (it was my first experience with a loop-). To this day it is still one of the most immersive rides I've ever been on. The light and theming was actually insane. I legit believed I was in outer space, when you came up on the sun it was beautiful. I went in again couple of years ago and being absolutely destroyed that they just slapped Star Wars on this, and basically removed every single light in the building. It's near pitch black inside and it doesn't feel like outer space at all anymore.

I will point out that Space Mountain Mission 2 wasn't just a generic sci fi ride, but actually a sequel to the original ride. (Hence the mission 2) it's kinda vaguely explained in the second to last room of the queue that after the success of the Moon mission previously, the Baltimore Gun Club had recharged the Columbiad Cannon to shoot further out into space. And now guests are boarding the new bullet ships on a mission to see a supernova and study it
@rct3isepic
@rct3isepic 6 месяцев назад
Also. I Completely agree that Hyperspace mountain shouldn't be permanent. I think it's a half baked version of that concept anyways and those new trains need to be put in a story they actually fit. I'd be ok with either previous missions returning or even a Mission 3, but Star Wars needs to leave
@A_A610
@A_A610 5 месяцев назад
However, the original De la Terre a la Lune version had a lot more period specific theming that really nailed the "1900s silent movie" feel (the Stellar Way, space mining equipment, Jules Verne cameo, the smiling moon). Mission 2 was a sequel in that it retained some superficial story elements, but once the ride began...it was thematically indistinguishable from any other version of Space Mountain. I think a big part of the problem was the original name change from Discovery Mountain to Space Mountain during development, since the more unique take would be inevitably compared to the other rides as opposed to being its own thing. Mission 2 made Space Mountain more Space Mountain in the Tomorrowland sense, but largely distanced it from the period elements that made the original Discovery Mountain concept unique.

I miss the old space mountain and I wish Disney would see the potential in the whole steampunk victoriana aesthetic. Theres so much to explore in that industrial revolution time period. What they did to Tim Delaneys masterpiece is from a theming perspective, the most confusing and most heavy handed presentation of the way disney has lostits way opting for stupid overlays that lose appeal when the IP becomes stagnant or oversaturated. Notice how disneys longest lasting attractions are often not IP based. Like haunted mansion, pirates, btmr and the original space mountain. Thats how it should be with DLP space mountain. The fact that DLP is a fairly big financial pit for disney is purely down to their lack of investment and the price of a stay. If they fixed that it would be much more of a destination. Why would you revisit every few years if theres literally no changes? I have all the blueprints and stuff for this space mountain and have been tempted in the past to recreate it in VR.

@@PoseidonEntertainment I haven't been on the new one but the fact is that they haven't added a permanent overlay for good reason. I'm hoping they don't retrospectively adapt them all to the upcoming movie though. It would break the entire story of frontier land at DLP given it has a totally different and all encompassing story throughout the land differing from the story of the US parks and tying it into BTMR very nicely. Disney could make such a great film based on the original DLP space mountain story because there is prior art. It would be a fantastic story to see the Columbiad in all its glory and follow the actual story of de la Terre a la lune and it would then give them a reason to return it to its former glory. I just hope that eventually they oversaturate themselves with IP and return to their roots.

As someone who grew up in the 90s with a lot of the more classic attractions at EPCOT, Magic Kingdom, etc, few things rub me the wrong way as the stripping down of timeless and educational properties in favor of key-jangling "look, it's [insert character name here!]" style rides. I can appreciate a lot of the tech and engineering that goes into them, but the fact is, they're a cheap design route and lack what made the original rides so fascinating and unique.

I'm a huge nerd of both Jules Verne and Georges Melies, and Disney's Vernian films and attractions in particular. I've been on every extant Disney Vernian attraction, and have the pin collection to show for it. Unfortunately, what I just barely missed was the original iteration of Discoveryland. I didn't get to DLP until 2008, and the last time was 2013... After From the Earth to the Moon and Le Visionarium were already gone. Mission 2 was still adequate, but basically just like any Space Mountain. At least it had the wonderful building aesthetic, and I still think that Disney's iteration of the Columbiad canon is stunning. It's really too bad, because From the Earth to the Moon looked amazing. The Vernian-by-way-of-Meliesian aesthetic (Verne was less concerned with "Steampunk" visualization... the Columbiad in the novel was just a hole in the ground, and the Nautilus was a sleek, cigar-shaped vessel) really captured a European fantasy and charm that resonates through the entirety of Disneyland Paris, which is by far the most beautiful Disney park in the world. And I remember being so hopeful that after Mission 2 they were going to restore it to From the Earth to the Moon 😆

Star Wars/Captain Eo while being an outlier not having that steampunk aesthetic and vibe, was always cleverly integrated. I’m paraphrasing with this but in a tour I watched from Tony Baxter, he described Lucas as the modern day sci-fi dreamer equivalent to Verne and Wells and the X-Wing on the top of the facade mirroring the other types of transportation seen around the land. However I’ve always been disgusted that this overlay still remains, it feels so tacky and the issue is I don’t think most guests really care unfortunately, it screams of an amusement park overlay IP tie in like Batman the ride, despite it being incased in this beautiful covering of what was intended…

The steam-punk theming is a nice way to tie everything in Discoveryland together but it was still designed in an era where each land contained a variety of thematically eclectic attractions, so I can't really fault it for that. An entire land based on European science fiction would be cool today though.

Ugh this is absolutely the saddest story of a great attraction becoming a total cashgrab. I loved the original theming of the ride and it’s a shame I won’t be able to experience it as it was originally designed. My only hope is that since Disney is a company that is known to bank on nostalgia, that they will eventually remove the Hyperspace Mountain theming and revive the original attraction with updated effects. They sort of did this at California Adventure, with Soarin’ Over California coming back as a limited offering in-between Soarin’ Over The World. The new steampunk cars at SM Paris also give me hope that they don’t plan to stick with the Star Wars theming forever. Thanks for this video! I’m glad to find others that share in the sentiment about this attraction.

Honestly Euro Disneyland, for all the good it had, probably should've never happened. Because of it's BIG financial failures, we never got Tomorrowland 2055, instead getting a cheap overlay with the ill fated Rocket Rods. We never got a cool 2nd gate in California like Westcot. Eisner hired Paul Presler, who was basically the Bob Chapek to the theme back in the late 90s, and cause some of this stuff. I know I sound angry, but just imagine the stuff we missed out on.

I still feel upset that i couldnt ride the original version of the paris space mountain. We used to go every year to dlp and i was never tall enough to ride it! On my 3 recent trips i was able to ride hyperspace and as a star wars fan i liked it the first time, but yeah this ride is really missing out on being one of the best. The theming was so unique for a ride that already existed in other parks, just like phantom manor compared to haunted mansion. I hope they bring back space mountain because i would love to ride it :(

Another well crafted video! Sad to see a unique and superior theme attraction be marginalize for the sake of reimagining. It looked like Paris Disneyland had a well theme E-Ticket attraction that complimented the theme of Discoveryland. WIth the departure of From the Earth to the Moon, it appeared the Disney turned it back on the steampunk vision of the Future. Now I am curious how well this land functioned including complimentary attractions and the overall atmosphere. I suppose the space mountain concept was Disney's second attempted of including a roller-coaster within their park after the Matterhorn which is also classified as a waterride. But with space mountain, the ride became a combination of a dark ride and a roller-coaster. I mostly have been familiar with the Disneyland version and later becoming aware that the Magic Kingdom coaster preceded that one. But both are devoid much theming. Except for the technology available at the time. And the Cosmic Rewind and the not mentioned Rock and Roll Coaster are also more extreme coasters in the dark. The bluesky of image of the volcano would have been incredible ... The Indiana attraction in Anaheim also had more dynamic interactions with the neighboring jungle cruise. ... I am not sure if we will see multiple attractions intertwined in the future. Besides the backstory theme, the other benefit that the Paris Space Mountain benefited from has been the improvement of the queue line experience. After space mountain in Anaheim, we saw a more immersive queue line experience with Big Thunder Mountain, Splash Mountain and Indiana Jones. Both space mountain at MK and DL pale in comparison to the original iteration of Paris version. Immersive queue line lessened the pain of the wait :-) . at least better than the monitor solution at many other parks.

Spot-on. I was there in 1997 as a kid and immediately fell in love with the Jules Vernes themed Space Mountain. When I returned in 2008 to show my ex gf what an awesome ride it was, nonetheless wanting to experience some long-lost nostalgia, I was very disappointed that nearly everything that made this ride such a great experience was stripped. It struck me as lack of maintenance, cost-saving cornercutting and a very cheap attempt to squeeze out a few more bucks over the backs of the returning fans. Save to say that when I visited the attraction again in 2017, now rebranded Star Wars, I had lowered my expectations thus much and even then it was a disappointing experience. I returned once more with my gf for the New Years eve event, but DisneyLand Paris is a sad reminder of a once great initiative, now turned into a bitter, expensive and capitalistic overcrowded reflection of todays consumer society. 'De Efteling' in Holland is a 1000x better choice if you're contemplating to visit a theme park in Europe.

Generally speaking, the best parts of DLP and TDR were the portions which were original to those resorts and not drowning in cartoons. Universal has always been about “riding the movies,” but by using former Imagineers to build out fully realized lands, Universal’s latest IP content has been impressive. Before Potter, Uni never matched Disney for placemaking. Sadly, over my last few trips to Japan, I’ve noticed Tokyo Disney Sea is drifting towards the same IP problem as the American parks. I suppose the decline is inevitable because Oriental Land Company is required to use WDI for all projects, and we know how WDI is going downhill. Imagineering simply doesn’t employ the talent it once had. Period. I hope Tokyo holds out as long as possible. Paris never had a chance.

As a major Star Wars fan I must say: I LOVE hyperspace mountain, as you said I think its a great season overlay for space mountain. But it should 100% be May only, if not the first two weeks of May alone. The problem as you mentioned was that its an overlay that has become a de-facto rebrand, despite the original theming present. I think if Disney were to go full-bore, and retheme the building, ques, and remaining original ride elements to Star Wars then it could be a successful concept. But this half-assed attempt to market the ride neither compares to the other Disney Star Wars rides, nor is as thematically consistent an experience as Space mountain or Cosmic rewind.

The biggest pro gamer move they could do but choose not to for some reason: - Revive any of the Jules Verne IPs they have worked on in the past and restore all the themed rides for new and old generations to discover again. Literally make it Discovery Island for new people. They have or have had Verne in what feels like half the parts already, just revive those with a good movie and suddenly they'd have a profitable IP again to use that they already have plenty of plans, rides, or designs for.

The irony of butchering this version of Space Mountain -- and some of the more questionable changes I've seen others discuss made to the wider Discoveryland area -- was that this presented the best "fix" possible to the Tomorrowland problem: how do you keep a land centered around science, technology, and the future relevant without overhauling it every ten years? Place it in the world of imagination, and theme it around a familiar, particular vision of the future. Trying to simulate a trip to the Moon or Mars based on current rocket science might not hold up once the realities of making those trips set in, but there's still a great deal of romanticism about the idea of space travel. Something retro-futuristic like the Jules Verne steampunk-esque theming of Discoveryland might already be extremely dated, but it also harkens back to an era where people had genuine interest in science and speculated about how new discoveries and new technology would transform people's lives. Tomorrowland was dreamt up with good intentions, but everyone's idea about the what the world of tomorrow will look like is different from person-to-person, and changes with the passing day. Keeping to a particular vision, molding your theming and attractions around it, and focusing more on the universal elements of that vision of the future would do more to serve any version of Tomorrowland or Space Mountain than slapping on a new coat of paint, or throwing in a cheap overlay.

Space Mountain is such a thematic disappointment currently. But next to what's said in the video, what really annoys me is that the first two iterations had a orchestral score and that's it, however Hyperspace Mountain of course has the Star Wars music, but also continued pilot chatter. It's like a Frenchman is yelling into your ears for the duration. Especially annoying if you don't speak the language. Disney also clearly hasn't learned. The Rock 'n' Rollercoaster refurb into Avengers: Flight Force is a disappointment. While RnR was an exciting ride with the music and light effects, Flight Force is a ride in the dark with a few glimpses at, I guess Captain Marvel or Iron Man? You fly past so fast you can't make them out. And then we have the queue. The Iron Man animatronic is somehow more often broken than working. There you stand in a room with a closed tube, looking at a TV. Wow. Finally the trains. Instead of getting new ones, they slapped a new hood on the ones they already had. I'm 6 feet, that shouldn't be too tall, but the seating's too short and the over the shoulder braces are too low, pushing you down uncomfortably.

When a ride features dynamic physical features that make it look unique and spectacular, like the locking barrel effect on the original Paris Space Mountain, that generally equates to high maintenance costs needed to keep those features working. The lead-up from the original ride to Hyperspace Mountain reflects just a part of Disney's anti-Eisnerism with its creative and thematic decision-making. The parks under Eisner's reign sought to deliver original experiences divorced from film IP, but the failure of endeavors such as California Adventure lead Disney (and Iger) to develop an incorrect affiliation with self-contained theming to guest disinterest. In reality, the failure of late-Eisner projects were obviously due to insufficient budgeting and thus cheap experiences.
