Dig into the discovery of antidepressant drugs, how they work, and what we still don’t know about depression.
--
In the 1950s, the discovery of two new drugs sparked what would become a multi-billion dollar market for antidepressants. Neither drug was intended to treat depression at all- many doctors and scientists believed psychotherapy was the only approach to treatment. Neil R. Jeyasingam details the decades-long journey that followed and how it revolutionized our understanding of depression.
Lesson by Neil R. Jeyasingam, directed by Skirmanta Jakaitė, Art Shot.

I suffered severe depression 20 years ago as a teenage. Got diagnosed with ADHD. Spent my whole life fighting ADHD. Not until my wife recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.

100% agree I used to have Psychosis and paranoid thoughts like "people thinking about me talking about me etc. Very odd behavior after getting off Adderall from 7-16. Antidepressants at 18-29. 31 now. I took way to much, but took about 20g of Gold caps (Psilocybin containing mushroom) I analyzed my entire life. The emotions that came out helped me understand behavior etc more. Wont ever need to do it again because I'm happy and contempt forever, but I wish more people did this to alter their perception of reality. Would help with healing much trauma

I just want to point out how psychiatry always says something like: we have effective treatments for schizophrenia and serious mental illnesses, meanwhile, they don't even come close to understanding how they work; and you just need to get out and see the number of homeless in the streets; I mean they say we can treat it, while you just have to look at those patients and see that they are so-far from controlling the disease.

I have just started my treatment and I can honestly say it's mind-blowing! I have been in therapy before but never had these results. For me, the most surprising part is not necessarily feeling good but the willingness to take risks, take decisions and make changes. Before this, I used to look around me and feel somehow trapped, like there was nothing I could do to change my situation, whereas not it seems as though my brain can find solutions.
@MrGG-xc6sg
@MrGG-xc6sg Год назад
That's it! When you think you are trapped you are just reinforcing the feeling/idea of being trapped. You need to think that anything is possible if you just put your mind in to it. Ones you got that you think that depression isn't real you put these walls over your mind that protect you from depression.

It's not just psychotherapy and antidepressants, there are 3 methods for combatting depression and any doctor that doesn't explore the 3rd option is falling short. Lifestyle is the 3rd factor. If you're working 80 hours a week, living paycheck to paycheck, etc, you can't be happy. Some of this is beyond our control but you can't expect results if you give someone medication and therapy when they're in an impossible life situation.

Finally getting diagnosed and given antidepressants for the last 2 years has definitely helped me improve my mental health. Some depression is situational...death of someone close to you, loss of job, physical health. It will usually go away on its own or with medical/counseling help. Some depression, like mine, needs constant care...in my case, medication. I'm fortunate in that after years of trying, I have found one that works with minimal side effects. Every individual needs to find what works for them, but unfortunately, many don't try or are unable to. It's not an easy life.

@@NotAnti2 hi! in my case, there have been no problems so far, really only benefits from the medication. i still take them everyday but my dose was halved recently. but of course we probably have drastically different cases and our response to the medicine would also be different. again, i don't think and feel i experienced negative effects from the medicine. while antidepressant dependence could be a concern, i personally haven't faced the problem, but i also think i really wouldn't as long as i abide by my psychiatrist's instructions. what i learned, however, is that antipdepressants really are only a part of "getting better." factors like lifestyle, mentality, and your surrounding environment are just as important. with that, i just wanna emphasize that antidepressants did help me, but i could still not improve when i still have problems with those other factors. what i do suggest is for you to visit a health professional and when you've received the proper medications and encounter any problems with it, you just have to tell them and they will make necessary adjustments. in my case, all visits had been a share of responses to the medication and adjustments in return.

Mood disorders are hard to regulate. It’s not something you just cure. I would say we aren’t that advanced. Unfortunately like he said lots of people don’t respond to medicines, but there is still a lot of doctors who just want to throw medicine at the problem and not address other issues that could contribute. (Socioeconomic status, level of support groups, behavioral, nutrition, other disorders, etc.) I was on prozac as a teen for many years. It was seen as a catch all at the time. Now I see a psychiatrist and take different meds that are a little more helpful for me. But let me tell you there is SOOO much that contributes to depression and anxiety. (Vitamin D, anemia, thyroid issues, people around you, exercise, thought process, trauma, other mental disorders like ADHD, anorexia etc,) A lot of times it is a side effect of something else going on. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Mood is hard to quantify. So it’s also harder to study. Harder to treat. Not everyone experiences depression the same way. There isn’t an easy way to “cure” depression. It’s mostly about improving your level of daily functioning.

I was on Sertraline and Fluoxetine therapies to treat depression but none of them helped me recover. On the other hand, I had severe side effects such as weight gain, headaches, insomnia and nearly developing diabetes. Therefore, it was not worthy taking them. Unfortunately, depression is more complex and just antidepressants aren’t the answer to the problem. If a patient suffers from unresolved trauma, medicine won’t really help. That’s why talking therapy with a psychologist is mandatory.

I'm on an ongoing psychiatric / psychological treatment for burnout. The anti anxiety medication I have also happen to be anti depressive. Around two weeks ago I tried to end my life - I had no prior suicidal thoughts in my life and I think this was solely a result from the medication. I took the decision to stop taking these medicines without consulting my psychiatrist / psychologist a day after because I was afraid of it. It was the worst decision in my life... I started to have suicidal thoughts everyday, I felt like I was drunk most of the time, rashes on my abdomen appeared and I simply couldn't sleep. The doctors then said that I should take the medicine as soon as possible and then I did... I'm on a license of 15 days from my job and I'm gradually getting better. The suicidal thoughts stopped and the rashes are gone. It's honestly terrifying how a medication that affects your brain can affect your body and your life.

@@ploofish82 unfortunately, it is true. My psychiatrist always advise me to not stop the medication abruptly. You'll have to try to keep a routine. Everyone's different so you'll have to try whatever suits you best. This is what I did: I've created an alarm on my phone to take them. I always bring them with me if I go somewhere just in case I'm not at home in time. Also, if I forget to take them for some reason I take them as soon as possible.

Very well done and ❤️felt applause for this video , I thought the way it was done by pictures & very nonjudgmental, I’ve been suffering Depression, anxiety, memory loss ( & probably bipolar ) for years ,& a lot of the ( & in layman’s terms) way things were told/ advised were excellent., 👍😎

I just switched school and felt (still do a bit) depressed. I found working out to really help with it. It gives you a better body which feels nice, but you also feel great leaving the gym. Knowing that you put effort into improving your life feels good.

I find studying the brain's chemical ratios and balances so interesting. It's so amazing we can give people special amounts and kinds of medication to balance out the brain.

My childhood best friend I haven't seen in a while has depression now and she's in a psychological clinic... She's only 14. I found out last week when I visited her again. It's so heartbreaking to see the joyful smile vanishing from someone's face... She already told me a while back that she wasn't doing all that well and plans on going to therapy, I comforted her and reassured her that therapy will help and everything is gonna be Allright! But I didn't think it was this bad anyway... I feel guilty for not staying in touch. I'm so worried

Out of the 7 I tried, they don’t work for me & instead make me a walking NPC with no genuine raw emotion. Also, some of them (such as Zoloft) lower your risk assessment drastically which can produce disastrous results in certain individuals (James Holmes). Speaking for myself personally as someone with depression induced by generalized anxiety disorder & PTSD: I am not a fan. Working out, socializing with others, a stronger sleeping schedule, a productive day, etc. benefit me much more. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk El fin

Anti-depressants worked so well for me. It made me feel like myself again. But my family can't afford them, so I just try to function like a normal person.

I am diagnosed with dysthymia since January 2019. I have been on medication with escitalopram and clozapine. This was a hard time. I just lost my job then searching for a new one. My health still wasn't stable from the past traumas I had four years ago. Depression has always been with me in the silence of my heart. Now it's 2021. Still on meds... and am hoping the clouds in my mind will clear out soon.
