Hey Andrea, you don't really have that strong of an accent in English. You only mispronounce a few words here and there. Adding a foreign language to your mind is like installing an additional operating system into your brain. You do great in English!

I think it is important to make clear that these benefits happen if you begin learning at these time periods, but obviously if you ever stop, you can lose the benefits easily. Hiring a nanny from China to speak to your baby for the first 9 months only will not help her learn Cantonese when she is an adult. Another important thing to mention is how different the learning is. I have worked as a tutor of languages to young children. Basically it is a waste of time. These young children can easily learn language if they are really exposed to it. But if they are five and they have one hour per week of my lesson, it is the same as zero. As Andrea explains, only after 8 do they learn consciously. Traditional style learning (aka low-exposure learning) basically won't work until they are 8 or older. To learn at a younger age they need 30 hours of exposure a week at least.

I heard once that if you speak your 1st language while mimicking someone else speaking your same language can help you with the accent. Example, my first and only language is English. The sounds of other languages simply confuse me because I cant mimick them or remember the words. However, if I try to learn Portuguese, I could find a native Brazilian who knows fluent English and listen to them speak English. If I tried to fake their Portuguese spin on English, it would familiarize my palate with the funky sounds! I tried it and it absolutely helps!!!

Another great video! I am very interested in this early period potential of children. You mention 0-9 months, 0-3 years old, 4-7 years old as separate periods each with its associated potential. Can you please direct me to the specific references? I have seen 0-3 years old somewhere, but can't remember. I do have a theory about why we should teach children languages as early as possible, and it has to do with brain development during the first few years. I do not know of any explicit studies that say language learning is directly influenced by the early brain development, but I think it would make sense. The biggest point is, regarding accent, I would argue that kids slowly lose their ability to "hear" or "distinguish" between different sounds in languages that he/she doesn't speak as they grow older. And this leads contributes to their inability to recreate the accurate sounds. I'm thinking this is related to the process of pruning, as seen in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R0fiu2S0_3M.html Anyway, your insights appreciated!

I live in Sweden where there are many immigrants. All the people I konw who came here when they were about 12-14 years old or younger speak Swedish like native Swedes. While those who came here as teenagers or adult have an accent.

Yes, that it possible, although if you take a closer look to their language level (amount of vocabulary, spoken and written level etc.), I think you would still notice that the language was learned at a later stage.

Same here in USA. 13-14 is usually cut off time. Every kid who comes here and still gets into elementary school will have no detectable accent. After 14 a slight accent persist. After 18, strong accent remains unless they take accent reduction classes..

Hi, My dear! Firstly, congratulation about your channel, it's amazing and help me out a lot. My name is Cinthia, I'm a Brazilian and I live in northeast of Brazil, Recife. I have 2 gorgeous kids, Júlia 3 years old and Theo 1 year and 8 months. Since they were in my belly I spoke English with them till now. They both speak English and Portuguese. Since Júlia is in a good level of English for her age, I'm introducing the trird language, Spanish, and pretty soon I want to introduce Mandarin. Just started Spanish and your videos about being a multilangual family is helping me a lot. I'm a teacher and I would love to became a teacher specialist in multilingualism, just like you. Will you help me? :) Just wanna know a little bit about your professional life, how did you became a specialist in multilingualism and what courses did you take, or even books you read about it. I do work in an International school and I would love to be the first multilingualism teacher there and of course, to my kids too. Hola Cinthia Thank you for your comment! Well, I´ve had to do with this topic my whole life and when I studied Pedagogy and became a primary teacher in Switzerland, I specialized in German as a second language and wrote my thesis about multilingualism. I´ve been visiting regularly courses about multilingualism since then, while working at public and multilingual schools teaching but also leading project and organizing courses for teachers about integration and multiple language acquisition. Some years ago I also finished my Masters Degree in Spanish. When it comes to books, I have several in English but mostly in German. Join my mailing list to stay in contact! Have a great day
