Ever wonder how cops catch speeders with radar or laser. I chat about that a little here. Not exhaustive by any means, but hopefully help you understand it a little bit better.

100.percent. Speed limits should be set at the 85th percentile. On most limited access highways, the speed limit should be around 80. Most are 70 or 75. It's far better than in the 80s when speed limits were 55 and 65 mph.

Q: Were the questions asked in Court when the officer was sworn in? If so the officer should be held by the court for LYING, and there should be some penalties accessed against him, his supervisor / upper management for not be properly trained and let out on the road to write tickets which drive up peoples insurance, Police are out of control, they need to have some kind of oversight board. I once went to court for a speeding ticket 15 years ago and asked for proof of the officer's radar calibration and the officer said he didn't need to prove or show anything to me or the court. Then the judge took over and defended the cop saying that he doesn't need to produce such documentation, because "he's an officer of the law and he has been sworn to tell the truth". Okay judge lady... I asked the judge if she was acting on behalf of the prosecution and boy...was she heated! "How dare you?!" ... Yup. Everyone in the courtroom gasped when I asked that. Fun times :D Judge didn't make me pay the fine, but still hit me with 2 points on my license

actually they're used for traffic surveys. The MUTCD states that all roads must have a speed limit of 55 with the exception of residential zones and interstate highways. In order for a road to have a lower speed limit a traffic survey has to be done and the findings must conclude that 55 would be unsafe. This has to be done every 5 years. It's a federal mandate. if your state receives federal highway funds (they all do) they have to adhere to the MUTCD.

Love it! I've had the same experience when being pulled over in a race-prepped street car. My track record is great in general, but stellar when in a car that somebody who doesn't know how to drive would never be driving. I believe police sense that kind of thing even if they are not a car guy. Many times they will do a walkaround on the car looking at the brakes/tires/safety equipment and such and get down to business after, usually without commentary about the car. Sometimes if they're a car guy they make a brief positive comment, but make sure not to open with some kind of compliment (staying professional). I was once pulled over by a nice and well-intentioned officer who was oncoming and saw that my seat belt was hanging up on the b-pillar because I wasn't wearing it. When I was pulled over and he walked up and noticed the harness belt I had on instead, he apologized, mentioned why he pulled me over, and said 'sorry to bother you and have a nice day'.

You’re ending statement, “Don’t speed, you won’t get a ticket” leads me to a question I’ve always had about one ticket I did get. I was a trucker traveling an almost empty 2 lane highway, loaded very heavy and climbing a long but only slightly elevated rise. Another trucker passed me at quite a high rate of speed and at the same time a cop crested the hill coming at us. The cop immediately spun around, lit up his lights, and to my huge surprise closed in behind me. I pulled over while the other trucker carried on. The cop insisted he caught me on his radar at way over the speed limit and wouldn’t be convinced otherwise. I asked him if it was possible his radar caught the truck that had just passed me but he insisted that it could not have. I remained polite and respectful the entire time and after the cop completed checking my logs and paperwork, he did eventually let me go with just a warning BUT he made it very clear he did not believe me and that he was CERTAIN I was the speeder! In fact he made me promise him that I would tell all other truckers over the CB for the next few miles not to speed in this area because he was out there and wouldn’t tolerate it! Ever since, I’ve always worried just how accurate radar really is and even if I abide the speed limit could I still get ticketed by just being in the wrong place at the wrong time?
@wetlettuce4768
@wetlettuce4768 6 лет назад
Not sure how it is in America but in the EU all trucks have a tachograph that records how long and at what speeds the rig has been driven at, I'd of just done a print out gave it to the cop and tell him politely to fuck off.
@pat5star
@pat5star 6 лет назад
Wet Lettuce When I first started and was a company driver we did have tachs and ya, that would have been great! When this incident happened it was later in my trucking career and by then I was an owner/operator, so no...I didn’t have anything in my truck that could verify I was telling the truth. I did try explaining to the cop that we were climbing a very long incline and I was hauling a quad-axle fully loaded (140,000lbs gross) so there was no way I could speed even if I wanted too...but of course that’s not really concrete proof and sure as hell he didn’t buy it. I even explained that as an o/o I ALWAYS maintained the speed limit (or even stayed slightly below it) because the increased fuel consumption from speeding hit me severely in the pocketbook but again, the cop didn’t care nor buy it. Nor did my perfect driver abstract (history) matter to him...which was something I was proud of and partly why this incident bothered me so much. So I asked my question here because I’ve always wondered since then if it is possible that a cop can mistake which vehicle he caught with radar and whether it’s possible that sometimes, however rarely, that a perfectly innocent driver could end up with a speeding ticket that should have been for someone else....or if I just had just run into a cop having a bad day that time or maybe even just an out and out asshole cop!

They were telling stories of how this one pig stakes out on that road fucking everyone over with a ticket even if they were only doing 29!!! Neither knows what the hell the other is doing cause its just too much trouble to use that blinky thingy. The interstate is closed for two hours as they cut people out of their cars. I have seen this happen several times, and nearly happen almost daily. Rarely have i seen someone plow grandpa for dragging ass in the passing lane

Not true bro. That's a very negative assumption for a group of people you don't like. Speeding/running lights/tailgating/reckless driving cause most wrecks. If you are one of those, you are worse than the person driving slow in the fast lane.
@jnvqc
@jnvqc 6 лет назад
Flannigan Bluffs You have no clue, firstly it's not the fast lane, it's the passing lane, secondly speeding isn't that big of a factor in causing accidents, the speed limits serve for decreasing the injury severity in case of an accident. Another factor is the speed differential between cars, if all cars travel at the same constant speed, keeping a safe distance from each other, the opportunities for accidents are almost nonexistent. But then comes the clueless lawmaker and decreases the speed limit, then the a holes like you drive at that speed limit on the "fast lane", the opportunities for an accident increase exponentially. There are numerous studies that state that drivers tend to drive at a speed they are comfortably at and ignore the speed limit, some drive slower than the limit, others faster, so the safest limit is the one 85% of the drivers drive below, this ensures a more uniform traffic flow. If a dumb politician lowers the limit too much, more drivers will lower their speed, others will maintain it, causing an increase in speed differential. A driver like you driving on the left at or below an artificially lowered speed limit is more dangerous than a driver "speeding" at 100 mph, you are disrupting the traffic flow, creating speed differences between cars forcing them to switch lanes. A low-mid end car from the last 20 years can travel safely at 85-95 mph on a highway, we are not in the 60's or 70's anymore, cars are orders of magnitude safer, or we are all driving at insane speeds at the time. Don't put speeding on the same level as running lights, the second is a lot more dangerous, also roundabouts should be favored over interceptions they are safer, more efficient, faster and decrease fuel consumption/emissions. But for some reason the US hates them. I'm talking about highways, on urban roads the situation is completely different, the speed limits are much more important, there should be more proactive measures for drivers to lower their speed instead of cops hiding in the bushes on the safest stretch of road, fishing for citations. One of the measures I particularly like is the shared road where pedestrians, cyclists and cars all share the same space, it can be counter intuitive but very effective. Another one is creating obstacles for cars with strange road features like double roundabouts, chicanes, different road pavements... All but suspension breaking bumps. For me the fundamental problems are the politicians that ignore data to appease to soccer moms, under funding the police so they have to rely on tickets, driving school being too easy and the mentality of drivers like you who only care about themselves and don't understand the bigger picture.
@ashleyjohansson230
@ashleyjohansson230 5 лет назад
On the passing lane, you still have to abide by the speed limit even though its a passing lane. You have to have the privilege of others slowing down so you can pass them and get back into the normal lanes. If you speed in a passing lane, you can still receive tickets.

I find it absurd that there's a 55mph speed limit on a straight divided stretch of highway near my house that has no entrance or exit, nor any houses remotely close to it. Speed limit could safely be well in excess of 80 without risking anyone. We don't drive cars from the 1950s anymore. And of course, police always hide in the bushes at the safest stretch of the road and catch people all day long running flow of traffic speeds. Meanwhile, when I was in the UK, the speed limit almost everywhere was 80-85mph. Driving shoeboxes, on narrow roads with heavy traffic, 80+ mph limit. US speed limits are absurd except for in school or residential areas.

Good video overall. However, I have always had an issue with people saying that excessive speed is dangerous. It is not. Now, in residential areas and local roads, speed limits should be obeyed. Same thing with congested traffic. My problem is with the almost Criminal lack of training that drivers get in the United States. I got my license at the age of 18 in Germany. As many people already know, on the German Autobahn there is no speed limit in areas that are open. But at the same time, the rigorous training that German drivers get before they are allowed to drive a vehicle on their own is intense. 90 hours of classroom instruction. 120 hours of Road training. We were taught how to avoid things like tunnel vision and other optical illusions driving at high speed. You also have to know basic auto maintenance. Such as changing tires, adding or changing oil, Battery Service and maintenance etc, etc. I completed my training in 9 months. That is actually rather quick buy German standards. Not to mention the paperwork. Germans love their paperwork. By the time everything was done, I had to pay approximately 1,600 US dollars to get my license in Germany, and this was in 1989! I can only imagine what it costs now. Despite the high speeds we travel on the German Autobahn (sometimes speeds in excess of 160 miles per hour for extended periods of time), accidents are extremely rare on the Autobahn compared to Interstate driving in the United States. This is because people are trained correctly how to drive safely at high speeds. When I came to the United States at the age of 25, the driver's license bureau would not switch my German license to an American license. Apparently that wasn't good enough for them. I was required to start from scratch, as if I had never driven before in my life. What did I have to do to obtain my license in the states? The same thing as any other American. Prove that you are a resident of the county that you were getting your license in, get 15 out of 20 questions correct on a written test, and show that you knew how to do a three-point turn and parallel park. after that, pay twenty bucks and have your picture taken. What a joke! You could train a monkey to pass. It's not that driving at high speeds is dangerous, it's the lack of training how to drive at high speeds, that is the problem. - peace and love to all

You forgot the good old stopwatch. Back in the day, they had markings in or on the road as well as land marks, set at certain distances. Then they had a chart that showed the calculations that figured out speed by time vs distance. Just like now, you think a car is speeding, they cross the benchmark you start the clock. They cross the second benchmark, you stop the clock and check the chart. Traffic cops got so good, that they knew the charts by heart and only watched the clock. They quit that in the early 70's when radar became widely used. (My grandfather was a cop back in the late 50's into the early 60's and told me how they did it.)

The thing with speeding, constantly changing lanes, tailgating and overall aggressive driving in a city thinking you are going to get to your destination faster is an illusion as traffic lights will stop you. I can’t count how many times a day people pass me like I’m hitched only for me to catch up to them sitting at a traffic light and we both leave at the same time from the light the difference being I didn’t have to stop. To to mention is waste gas, endangers lives and is costly due to tickets and insurance going up.

While I do not pretend to be an expert nor an attorney, I will say the way I understand the law, the FCC has authority over transmitted radio waves, not transmitted light. Thus RADAR Jammers are indeed illegal. However the FDA has authority over transmitted light and lasers (from what Ihave read its because the first commercial lasers were for medical use, thus FDA got the responsibility from congress to come up with rules) and they has not ruled LIDAR, or 'Laser' Jammers to be illegal (but some states have individually legislatively banned them). In most states currently ( Dec 2017), laser jammers are legal, however RADAR Jammers are illegal in all 50 states. Please let me know if I am misinformed.

you should always slow down when your going past a vehicle thats stopped where a vehicle wouldnt normally be stopped. On the vast majority of streets the speed limit accounts for common parking practices, but especially on highways and motorways you should still slow down because the speed limits in areas where people normally wouldnt be stopped don't allow for that hazard. The number of people who would still be alive today if drivers simply took their foot off the accelerator when there was an abnormal hazard in front of them is actually quite surprising. So many collisions with vehicles or people in road shoulders that simply wouldn't have happened if any single person going past had slowed down (forcing the people behind them to slow down) so they had more control over the situation.

I personally most often see people slowing down on motorways and similar high speed roads, rural roads, etc. Places where it's uncommon for vehicles to be parked, hence why the speed limit is higher because of better lines of sight and fewer hazards.

Mike, YOU may be good enough to preform an observational estimate of another drivers speed. However, I got accused of going 15 mph's over (45 in a 30 zone) once by an officer. My newer vehicle read 29mph on the guage, with oem wheel/tire sizes. He was adamant of his estimation, but all I could tell him is that he is inaccurate, or my gauges are off by a nautical mile. Just so you know.

VASCAR "Visual Average Speed Computer And Recorder" is commonly used in Pennsylvania. RADAR "radio detection and ranging." LIDAR "Light Detection and Ranging" As part of becoming a Certified Police Instructor for both the RADAR & LIDAR operations. I had to do log & verify vehicle speeds solely based on observation for an 80 hour period. At the end of the 80 hour field observation, i was able to determine vehicle speeds within plus or minus 1 MPH. I hated sitting stationary performing Speed Enforcement details. I felt as If I was robbing Tax Payers of their money, plus started gaining weight, as I basically did nothing but sit parked listening to every radio station for hours upon hours. FYI RED CARS ARE A MYTH. RADAR units are extremely sensitive to MASS so SIZE DOES MATTER LIDAR units are Target specific as they have a narrow detection beam & focus on targets the unit is pointing towards. The ANNOYING noise is known as the DOPPLER tone. The tone increases in frequency as a target is coming towards you, the higher the pitch the faster the target is going. If the tones pitch is decreasing in nature then the target is moving away from the unit. A.K.A COSINE EFFECT.

What does the unit do when your target is in the Zero Doppler Notch. That is when the target is moving at 90 degrees to the beam and therefore there is no Doppler Effect. I know the term from military flying since we would try to get into the ZD Notch in order to evade SAMs, (Surface to Air Missiles), though clearly attemting to find the ZDN on an Interstate would be fraught with danger ;-) Also, one wonders if your units are as sensitive as some SAM radars that show helicopters both as advancing and retreating since it is actually reading the rotor blades so there is always one coming towards the unit and another going away.

"Don't speed and you won't get a ticket." Utter bullshit. Three times in my 35+ year driving career I have been pulled over on false speeding charges. The most flagrant was on a dark, rainy night when I was driving *below* the speed limit on a semi-rural highway because I was giving friends in another vehicle a chance to catch up. They got held up at a traffic light a few miles back. If anything I was the slowest vehicle on the road, as car after car was passing me. Yet these bozo cops deemed that I was speeding. They must think it's a new day every time they blink. They seemed to be quite stupid. I fought that one and went to court. The bozo cop was a no-show. I'll spare you the details of the other times. But on the flip side I was *not* pulled over in broad daylight, laser speed traps when I was indeed traveling at excessive speed. Seemed there was something about that car that must have bounced the beam in directions away from the laser gun.

@@gamefreak12763 they can do it but they will never do it with a competent lawyer. If a cop doesnt show up, just say you want to dismiss the case. I had something similar: I was charged with a DUI and like 8 other charges. They threw the book at me. For months I prepared for trials to represent myself. I just wanted to get some experience and didnt care if I get the full penalty (like 60 days in jail). I had hired lawyers for my 1st DUI and the lawyer didnt do anything. I got same sentence as any other DUI without a lawyer. All he did was just hold my hand. So anyways, at this DUI #2 trial the judge and prosecutor were telling everyone who doesnt have a lawyer to get a public one right now. And they did. As everyones case was being called up, lots of officers were not present. The lawyers said "we would like to reschedule", and the judge did. When my case came up, I said " i would to dismiss my case because no witness from the state", and judge without question dismissed ALL charges My friend had a DUI as well later on. His officer didnt come. His paid lawyer said same thing and all charges were dismissed also police reports or written statements are not in any way sworn testimony if person is not there to verify. Its called hearsay. No courtroom would every accept a written statement from a person who is not there as a sworn testament. Judge would be disciplined. It might work in some very low traffic court but never against someone with a lawyer or someone just wearing a suit. Hearsay is not accepted because anyone can claim "I have a written statement from John Doe that he was speeding". When a prosecutor says that, he is taking any responsibility off his shoulders if John Doe is lying. Moreover, we cant prove if John Doe is lying. So if hearsay was accepted, every prosecutor would rather state "i have a written statement from X" and never actually call any witnesses forth. This is especially true since the cop was the sole witness. The whole case rested on his testimony. By not being in court, he cannot be questioned, it means you cannot have a trial because its basically you against a piece of paper something is not right about your case. Written testimony will never be accepted from a sole witness. What happened was that probably either judge or prosecutor manipulated you to plead guilty and you did

He walks up to my window and says "license and reigistration please. do you know why i pulled you over?" obviously i dont, so he says "you increased your speed to try and evade me" and when i tell him i was not aware he was in pursuit of my vehicle because his lights were not flashing he says "no sir, they were not flashing but when i see you looking in your rear view constantly and then go out of your way to get away from me, i have to question what youre running from" he then asks if he can search my vehicle, i had nothing to hide so i said sure, he called in another cop, he had me get out of the car and stand with the other cop while he rifled through my car, spilling my coffee all over my seat, tore everything out of the glove box and left it on the floor, turned my trunk inside out, was looking in the vents with a flashlight and tapping along the outside panels with his flashlight leaving dents and chips in the paint. finally he says "alright, im gonna let you off with a warning this time, in the future i would advise you to not speed away from an officer like that" i was a young kid who didnt know any better but now i dont drive without my two dashcams recording (one panoramic in front, one rear and a mic) and i always ask for an officers badge number and name before handing over my license and reg just in case

I would have to disagree with you and most people on your statement that "speeding is a dangerous thing to do".. The statistics of countries that have lenient or more then lenient speeding laws have fewer traffic accidents and fewer deaths by traffic accidents then countries that have more stringent speeding laws... In some cases the numbers are hard to dismiss... Now that could be because of many numerous factors, one of which is that bad drivers are allowed to drive on our roads because their insurance gives them a new car every 6 months after they continue to get into accidents... I totally agree that bad drivers should not be allowed to drive.. but I also agree that good drivers should be aloud to speed like on the autobahn in Germany..

Here are some of the factors which make higher speed limits in other countries less of a problem. I've also driven on the German Autobahns, and in fact there *are* speed limits. The "no limit" sections are the exception, not the rule. We'll start with the biggest one: many other countries have a real driving test. I've passed my test in 3 countries, including the US. The one here was a joke. The whole concept of "you can make 'n' mistakes and still pass: in the other countries, you need to get 100% to pass. Their tests also include highway driving, reverse parallel parking, reversing around a bend, emergency stops, and so on. The written test included things like *distances* (how close to a curve, or hill crest, can you safely overtake; how near a corner or driveway can you park; etc). Oh, and if you fail, you go right back to the beginning of the learning sequence and have to wait months before you can retest. Then there are coutries with probationary periods after you pass your test. When I got my first license, I was limited to 50mph (regardless of the speed limit) for 12 months. *Any* infraction, even a parking ticket, and you were walking: back to the beginning with a learner's permit again then months before you could retest. Thankfully, insurance companies were not allowed to "take notice" of a failed probationary license when calculating premiums on your full license. Move onto the state of the vehicles. The US has a smog test: basically for pollution control. Other countries have a roadworthiness test. Everything (from seat belts to bulbs to brakes to oil leaks to body rust) has to be checked once per year. It can take over an hour to complete and includes testing all the brakes on a rolling road. IF your car has just passed the road test, you know it's safe. Random spot checks on vehicles. In other countries, the police can simply pull you over at random and do a roadside safety checks. So again, the average car is likely to be in much better condition. If you fail, you get a producer and have to fix it within a week. This is needed if you want to drive at high speed, I've seen cars in the US which pass the smog test, but are basically held together by the rust. what this adds up to is a higher skill level (on average) for drivers, who are driving (on average) much better maintained vehicles. And that's important, because it isn't speeding that's dangerous per se. It's not knowing how to drive safely at speed. Not instinctively understanding the different response of a car to the same control inputs (steering, braking, etc) at low and high speeds. And driving at a speed more than about 10mph in excess of those around you on a busy road.

@@stainlesssteellemming3885 almost 50% of the autobahn is still unrestricted. I'd hardly call that the exception. You must have driven in mostly built up areas.

@@johnryan6658 Possibly .. that and road works. I often fly into Frankfurt or Munich and then drive to "nearby" cities. I'll keep an eye out tomorrow when I'm flying into Hannover and heading East.

When I was a teenager, I worked at McDonald's and off duty cops were security at night. When it was slow, we would talk and he told me that the most dangerous things for cops to do is approach cars at night for traffic stops. He said if I rolled down my window, shut off the car, turn the interior lights on and keep my hands where the cop can see them, more times than not you wouldn't get a ticket. So far that has worked every time.

Going 5-10 mph above the limit (unless in a school zone) or may be 10-15 mph in a non busy road should be fine, but some jerks are driving 60 at 30 roads and some do dangerous maneuvering in addition to high speed. They well deserve a ticket.

my problem with the idea of using radar while the vehicle is moving, or even with the engine running, is i can foresee vibrations from the engine and road making the reading unreliable. Also, it'd only really be accurate for oblique angles.
