Was wondering about this, but am glad to hear the comparison because it was my plan to use them together, while expanding my choices of colors and shades!!! Thank you!! ~tina

I really like the way they all turned out with this stencil. Fun :) I have seen one other comparison tutorial and the major difference seemed to be when activating/blending two colors with a water brush. I do believe that the gelatos blended a tad more seamlessly ... say, on a flower petal when working them from a water color standpoint. Even that difference wasn't much, and as you demonstrated here, it was more pronounced when the distress crayons had been allowed to sit for awhile before trying to blend further. I don't really care on that score. I love the distress color line and these make a fantastic addition. I also eat up every color I can get when new gelatos colors come out too :). I think it's fair to say that if you want the under layers to stay intact on a multi layered project, that sealing them with a gel medium using the gelli plate would be a good way to go before building up any wet media layers on top. Always love seeing your beautiful smile (and purely scientific manner in approaching art ;) Thanks

Thanks for the great comparison demo. Great NEW supplies come out and it very hard not to go get them, especially when you already have something that can work just as well. You just don't know it until it's tried and compared.

Thanks,,Carolyn for doing this test, as I have wondered about the Distress toys. Now, I know to collect ones different from my small set of Gelatos.

I have a large set of gelatos, then saw Wendy Vechi do a demo at a show with the distress crayons, I thought, great, now I have to get them. You saved me a lot of money thanks!

After you let them cure, I would have liked to see a comparison of smudginess before you apply water. I want it to be stable and curious if either one is.

Thanks for this video - I had purchased a whole set of gelatos and really didn't know how to use them - tried several times trying to use them as watercolors, scribbiling on a piece of paper and wasn't happy with the results. Baby wipes now I know the answer -- I think the store clerks look at me a little strangely when I purchase babywipes at my age LOL.

It is as I suspected. Distress Crayons are basically the same as Gelatos. I've invested heavily in Gelatos, so I think I'll be bypassing the Distress Crayons.

did you have gesso on your paper before you began? That makes a huge difference with the distress crayons

I have used both every which way and I prefer gelatos by far. But I was able to find distress crayons for a few bucks a pack and have four of the sets. But if I hadn’t found that fab deal which basically got me $50+ worth of distress crayons for a little over $10 I would NEVER have purchased any beyond the two open stock of my favorite Holtz colors I bought to try. I just love my Faber Castell, and I love my Neocolor II and Portfolio crayons. They are amazing. The only thing I give Distress line is the variety of color, but FC gelatos have tons of new colors that are also in metallics and iridescent and the6 are stunning! Distress crayons have neither of those and instead he made a few gross colors. Unique, yes, but ugly. Gesso or not, gelatos are the bomb and I see no reason to invest in expensive Distress crayons.

I was gifted some gelatos, but I’ve never used them, because I thought I had to use specialty paper or prep the paper with gesso. It doesn’t look like you used anything special. I’m mainly a card maker. It seems like these products never really dry. I’m having a hard time seeing myself using them. 🤷‍♀️

Quick question. Did you Gesso first? I am assuming you didn't, but you know what happens when you assume. LOL... thanks for sharing your play!

+JokersSoul 69 I did not gesso on this one, it was straight on the paper. :)

I don't think this is a totally fair comparison. They are very different when activated with water and blended straight after application. Have to say I love them both equally.

It looks like the gelatos are much more vibrant. I’ve always found the gelatos to be much more creamy.

Ah well a few questions i had that you didn't address... I can put gel medium over my gelatos and they don't smear... can i do that with Distress Crayons?? Also it would have been nice to see a blendability comparison... How nice of a blend you can get between different colors of crayon as compared to different colors of gelato... But thank you for what you did do... It all helps. Hugs! deb

Did you do up ever try these? My guess is that if gelatos don’t smear for you then distress crayons wouldn’t either. I haven’t tried it but for me the gelatos are more workable and creamy and Distress goes dry pretty quick and are designed to not move once you put them where you want. I’d guess Distress would even be less likely to smear and shouldn’t. Intuitive guess based on the two products.

I haven't used the distress markers yet. I love all things Tim, so I know I'll love them. I just saw where someone compared Distress markers with the Target Gel Crayons. Heck I didn't know they made them. I will say that they work very much like the distress markers. 3.49 for 8 colors (limited of course) at Target. I could get into doing some serious blending!! lol I love your scientific comparison!! It works for me.

I really like the dimensional effect you got by smearing the partly cured colors with the baby wipe. Especially the circle in the very middle of the page--wow!

So basically, Distress crayons are more permanent after drying (just like everyone says) , and Gelatos are not. Got it. I don't want color that can be easily ruined by throwing water over them after drying. So I will consider the Gelatos too unstable for use. Thank you.

I love them. It's but I really prefer Distress Crayons over gelatos for card making. I also love the creaminess of the distress crayons. I also found that when I blended them together for backgrounds on my cards that the distress crayons had a smoother look (could have been me)!
