How Do Female Artists Paint Women? I Behind the Masterpiece

Throughout history, women have often faced significant challenges and obstacles, particularly in male-dominated fields such as art. Despite these difficulties, many female artists have created powerful and impactful works that reflect their experiences as women. These works not only showcase their artistic talents but also provide insights into the female experience, offering perspectives that have often been overlooked or marginalized. By exploring paintings done by women of women, we can gain a deeper understanding of the diverse and rich range of female experiences throughout history and across cultures, and begin to reshape the narrative.

If you were born a woman, you see the female figure differently you understand your own body and what’s around it, and how it influences how others see you. In RU-vid, you can pretty much see this difference in the art community as well. Doesn’t matter if gay or straight, it’s spot on when the person painting or sculpting a woman isn’t one.

on the last painting, "the stool or pedestal" looks like a black queen chess piece to me, and she's proudly sitting on it, even though it seems uncomfortable, and it almost feel like a part of her. And i think this detail has great meaning and is worth mentioning, as black in chess always has a step back, but the queen is the most powerful piece.

I have a question, often I've been under the impression that (in certain periods) the main form of education a woman could get for some time was art lessons (amongst sewing and embroidery) so if that's the case why were women so unrecognised in the field or disrespected by men? I mean I assume it's just classic misogyny but still, it's confusing.
@jmhatyoutube6283
@jmhatyoutube6283 18 дней назад
It’s my impression that young women were once taught watercolor painting in much the same way as they were taught embroidery or playing the piano. It was part and parcel of being a lady. You painted little pictures of the flowers in your garden, or scenes from a trip in a journal, or you entertained guests with a passable turn at the piano. You were NOT expected to do any of these things professionally, indeed, doing any of them professionally was out of the question.
@TheSuperBanana8747

I think you can see examples of this exact sexist nonsense in other fields. Cooking is women's work, but professional chefs were mostly men. Sewing was women's work, but the "best" designers were men. Women learned piano but composers were often men. Historically, women have just not been taken seriously in most professional fields, even in the fields that are supposed to be "ours"

It wasn't uncommon for women to understudy to influential male artists, often in exchange for modeling. Of course, because the women were being objectified as models they were considered more useful as props by their male peers and shuttered out of the world of gallery exhibitions. Elizabeth Siddall is a great example as well of how male artists abused their models. Elizabeth wished to study to become an artist herself and was told to model in exchange. She famously modeled for the painting Ophelia by John Everett Millias, and it nearly killed her. She wasn't able to persue much of a career after that.

It was seen as more of a hobby then professional. I guess people simply tolerated women doing certain hobbies as long as they were not considered "professional". Actually, this mirrors chefs. More women cook then men, generally, due to old held ideas that women stay in the kitchen. However, despite this most "professional" chefs are men.

Young ladies off noble descent learned basic painting techniques, mostly flowers and fruit and similar objects, that is true. But they almost never got access to skilled, specialised teachers and by the time they turned 14 they were preparing for marriage they hardly had the opportunity to live out a passion. Then, later, they were married and had children, managed relationships with suppliers and servants and built social connections. Very few young women could just go to a beautiful place and paint, nevermind study painting somewhere for years - it was odd behaviour and might have a bad impact on their children's future and her place in her husband's house. So many talented women only started living for a passion for painting in their later years and by then the style they had grown up loving were usually out of fashion. Most of their paintings were not kept after their passing, at most their kids might keep one or two of their favorites.

im getting a lot of vibes about how depicting women in certain ways that allure and attract and entice automatically make it as though it is a power play or dominance thing by male artists. as if men were spending hours of their lives just drawing women in order to reduce women to some piece of meat. men love women. men have always venerated women. in some of these artworks, men depicted the beauty of what they are inspired by of women. they elevate the various aspects of femininity and the female figure. i mean, let's take the statue of david for example. is that sexualizing maleness or is that bringing forth the potentials n beauty of maleness? how many men even look like the david statue? why is it men don't say 'you made this thing too fit, make him with a belly, make him thinner and less muscular, why is his privates so small? you are taking away his manhood n reducing him to just a muscle workhorse. nobody sensible will say this. but if a man draws women in an enticing way or not in a less appealing manner - sexualization, dominance, power play. men don't spend hours drawing women if they didn't love women and wanted to bring out the most attractive aspects of femininity. you people have it wrong

I don't think there is anything wrong with artists or women embracing se×uality and even allowing it to empower them. Does not mean you have to actually go out and use your body to do the actual act. I'm a dedicated wife but I do have this secret side to my personality and it comes out through my art. That's how I express it and how beautiful I think the female figure is in general.

Do you think that was a genuine expression or feeling the need to fit in with the others, or feeling that to be natural because of art history's obsession with the subject? Just because your classmates were rolling with it and didn't express distress there's a high chance it was something that actively bothered them, which sounds like something you might not take into consideration. I'm asking as a non-binary person who is interested in (and made pieces with) explicit depictions, but much more deeply admires things like non-sexualized nudity and more realistic depictions of people.
@nsjs17
@nsjs17 22 дня назад
Not a single one in multiple classes, huh? Your language is very telling. You're attempting to excuse sexualization by pretending all the women you saw in your classes were participating and ok with it. Doubtful. I'd bet quite a bit that your bias drew your attention to those paintings especially, making you think there was an overabundance. Not to mention, your use of female as a noun rather than adj. tells me you likely overly sexualize women by default, likely are (pcorn)sick, and thus not paying attention to reality and instead ascribing your own perversions onto women and their intentions.

@@nidhishshivashankar4885 You might be restricting your definition of bullying into a really specific and narrow version of it. James stating that there wasn't a single one who didn't have an issue in their art classes is a similarly really ignorant statement. Of course there are girls who draw pretty girls, or sexualized ones, but stating that "nobody bullies" anyone into creating anything they are not comfortable with is factually wrong.

This generation of young women embrace their sexuality. Maybe sexualizing the model is liberating for them. They get to take ownership of the female form. Maybe they're just joking around together for fun.
