I wish schools would teach how to: grow a garden, hunt,fish, trap. How to preserve food. How to build a shelter. How to gather and filter water for human consumption. How to build a fire( stove,place,oven) using fuel without electricity. How to sew clothes, shoes,etc. You get the drift. Knowledge is power.
I wish high schools would teach kids about electricity so that they're not so afraid of electricity and that they are in the know also I wish that they would teach them basic Plumbing skills for the same reasons .. some schools in Arkansas teach children the skills required to be in a trade like Plumbing or electrical or Horticulture and actually have entire Farms to teach children how to take care of farming and ranching so that by the time they graduate from high school they can go out and get a job that pays $50,000 a year and I know that in Florida you can go to a high school as a freshman they will start teaching the classes so that when you graduate from high school in Tampa you have also an Associates college degree
Why wait for the schools to fulfill this? Where does loving proactive parenting come in? I believe we are responsible for passing on our values to our children
@@clairekuchel-klassen7103 while I agree with you, I also know that these skills have been lost to my generation (1980-90 kids) because our parents were too busy working or self involved, so we now don't know anything about them. We ourselves have packed too much into our lifestyles to see the need for them. Maybe instead of pounding in academics, schools should bring back home economics and scouting/ outdoors skills, to create a resurgence of self reliance and independence?
@@heatherlw13 I'm from the generation you mentioned. It's not too late to learn these skills yourself. Just this past year I learned to pressure can and did a small garden. I do wish that our parents had valued these skills above, or at least equal to, college education. But, at least I can start now. Better late than never!
Something I learned from a frugal lady was to always spend your weekly/monthly food budget. She advised to NOT hang on to it and not spend one week. She suggested to shop the sale ad and stock up on non perishables that you could use another package of….when it’s on sale. I’ve now realized this is what my Mother always did. We had different food every week, yet she stayed on budget and we never ran out. (We always had a very large garden, chickens for eggs etc etc).
To cheer yourself up and add a lift... put a vase of flowering weeds and grasses from your local neighbourhood on your table with a nice cloth, dishcloth or pillowcase under it. You can use a clear coffee jar or jam jar as a vase. Give your table a good clean too.
I cook every other day. I’m only using my stove/oven every other day. The other days are leftovers. Easy to warm up in the microwave. Saves me time and money on my electric/gas bill 😃
I make my own laundry detergent. Being frugal, I noticed the cost of ingredients rising. I researched the ingredients and found that I can change baking soda to washing soda by cooking it in the oven on 200 degrees for 30 minutes! 8 7 ounces of Arm and Hammer washing soda costs me $4.67. 8 ounces of generic baking soda costs 72 cents! That is a new huge savings on an already frugal practice! Never stop researching!
I'm 65, I lost my best friend last year, very little family left & few friends I sought out friends from decades ago as phone friends. A few but have really been rewarding getting back with them.

We needed two recliners so I just watched at waited I found a nice faux leather one for $20 at a moving sale and another for free just yesterday for free at a moving sale - it was great I thought I was going to have to pay a lot more but decided I would wait and it worked out i just had to clean them and they were fine for us 😀
I took about a week to write down every way I could think of to save that we weren’t doing. It was going to be a just in case situation but things were already getting tight so I started them all instead of waiting for an emergency situation.
Regarding hierarchy of buying: More than two years ago, I wrote a list of emergency supplies that would help me through power-outages. In my area, those happen more often during summer storms and last as long as three days. Just this month, I bought a portable indoor heater for WINTER outages.
My spouse and I are going back to work. We tried to live on our investments. I am 57 and my spouse is 51. We moved to be closer to family and to a state with a lower cost of living. We decided that we would go back to work. We have been blessed to find jobs. I found out that I can work another 6 plus years and I will have a larger pension. I was gifted a bag of oranges and a ten pound bag of potatoes. My house smells wonderful as the oranges are dehydrating. Tomorrow, slicing up and drying potatoes. Thanks for your channel!
To me, frugality means being selective. I have to conscientiously decide what to buy, what not to buy. I am more aware of not only purchases but things I already own.
I do intermittent fasting sometimes and instead of having 3 meals and 2 snacks a day, I eat 2 meals and 1 snack a day. I do this for health but it saves quite a bit of money, too.
we don't shop for our amusement we don't follow trends we don't try to keep up with anyone we buy quality items we actually use we take care of our things we only buy what we use.if we don't use it,why buy it? sales don't entice us. if we were never even thinking about an item to begin with,why do we desperately have to get it on sale?we won't miss out.there are always sales to be had. we keep our expenses low. we use free or low cost services in our area.
One major problem is when a frugal person is married to a mostly non-frugal person and the efforts of the frugal one get undermined or even teased. This is especially true when the non frugal one maintains control of the budget.
Or it's discovered that one partner has bipolar. In that instance, that person's spending money NEEDS to be separate from the family checkbook. And they should NOT be in charge of the finances either. Seek professional help for this if you need to.

Yea that's not fair... both people should be in charge of the budget and both people should have an equal amount of spending money and if one wants to make a big purchase it should be discussed with the other person. There should be lots and lots of discussions on how to meet each other half way. Makes for a better marriage to have finances in check and doesn't build up resentment for each other.
We walked into a community thrift stores last week just to check it out. We found 2 shirts 👕 and 2 pr. jeans for $8. They were like new & nobody would know looking at them.
Frugal people also repair their own items.. I fix washers, dryers, ovens, refrigerators, computers, vehicles etc... I've fixed my washer and dryer probably 10 times over the last twenty years... these days its pretty easy to get parts and find schematics online..
We do a once a month game and dinner night with friends. We have 2 couple friends and we take turns hosting at the 3 different homes. Much more frugal than eating out together and we play games and have lots of good laughs 😅
I cut our monthly grocery budget to $100 so yes $25 per week. Cowgirl has our Retirement Ranch fully stocked with 2 deep freezers stocked with meat, and baking goods. All of our paper products yes we have TP for a full year lol 😂 homemade meals and breads. Sinking funds definitely are stuffed every month in cash ..... We started stashing cash into savings $1500 monthly. Only buy the needs, for several months and save the money you would have spent on wants. When I read nutritional information that is based on a 2000 calorie a day diet, (food labels) it makes me have a better understanding of why so many people are fat. It's hard for me to consume 1000 calories a day. The less you eat, the less you require. Your stomach will shrink and feel full.
It's a difficult question in the beginning, what you WANT & what you NEED, but it's very much a great thing to learn. We've been saving money little by little, it adds to a great success! Always put money in your savings &/or emergency fund to take care of anything & everything
Recently discovered your videos and have been enjoying them! I am trying to pinch pennies, like everyone else. While we are still very early in the cold season here in Ohio, I am determined to lower my thermostat. WIth that in mind, I was reminded that a co-worker had given me two large totes of her husbands old clothing (we're both bigger guys, so she thought I could use them) and was pleasantly surprised by the amount of warm clothes the totes contained. These freebies will help me stay warm this winter with the lower thermostat setting!
The thing you said about buying quality items at a decent price has been one of my biggest frugal lessons. My best example of this was blenders. I was buying cheap blenders. They never held up long and I'd buy another every 1 to 2 years. I wasted so much money. I should have just saved up for a nice vitamix! I finally purchased a refurbished vitamix during an annual sale rather than buying another throw away blender. I wasted so much on cheap junk!
My mother always used to say, "Buy once and buy well." Buying the name brand of something, if it's of better quality, is going to last longer than its cheaper counterpart.
I think the biggest difference between frugal and cheap is missing out. When you're frugal, you don't actually miss out on anything, you save to have quality that will last and don't sacrifice a comfortable life. Cheap people give up comfort and quality just to save money

I'm struggling to embrace frugality again. Now I'm just poor and man it gets disheartening to continually do without. Trying to focus on the fact it doesn't mean it will always be this disappointing. One thing I've noticed is instead of sudden splurge spending, taking time to research can prevent over buying. Not just buying too much but over buying by choosing a fancier laptop (maybe a small tablet would work just fine), a car that will cost more to repair, or even clothes- spending $100s on a dress we will wear once for a special occasion instead of finding something we can spend less on, or borrow one even.
The generator I wanted was priced at $950 ; after a lot of searching, I found the same one for $750. Speaking of frugal, try growing tomatoes and making your own ketchup. That was funny about the long spoon. They are useful for planting tomato seedlings, too.
It is worth to watch your show as I saved by 48% on electricity and gas as $30 dollars and laundry. I purchased under wares from Sam’s club that non cotton so we can hand wash and reduced. The amount of laundary, It is not about money but gives me ultimate freedom that I can contro my spending which gives me confidence! Thanks to your spirit and wisdom.

Going to one foodbank I meet a social worker that works there, these people are very helpful getting you aid like grant money. If things are really tight for you I suggest you investigate them.
I make my handwritten spreadsheets fun to do by using lots of different colors sometimes I will put Utilities in Orange and food and red and car maintenance in blue and I just made it look like something fun to look at because of the colors and very easy to quickly glance to see where I'm at in my goals
Ordered 100 free checks online from bank zero cost. Got $18.00 two-inch ribeye steak today at foodbank plus other goodies. Got property tax today, between my sister and me, runs less than $2,000.00, be glad to get this out of way so I can see where my bank & stash money stands, insurance already paid.
I buy simple clothing no fads take inventory before I shop what I really need and not wants so I don't spend time looking at clothing in stores one thing I don't skimp on his shoes I have two pairs of shoes which are for church and going out to eat which is about twice a month and they are not expensive but for everday my sketchers are my favoriite and and I only have one pair I waited too long to buy another pair
We live in an area that is very affluent...our home is the smallest in our subdivision. Our neighbors have lots of toys; boats etc. We know it's not what we want or can afford but some of our neighbors either don't understand or just outright snub us.

I once had the opposite problem with my first driving instructor, he got overconfident and instructed me to get into the lane to do a particular thing at a junction....I got into a different lane and he questioned me about it before looking at where he'd told me to go, and I said "there's an RTA on that lane". And then he looked. And felt foolish. Bless him.

For me, I like to know when "you get what you pay for" and when it doesn't matter at all. That way I can get the absolute cheapest option where I'll never notice and have more to spend elsewhere. I have ADHD so I'm super-aware of the potential to impulse buy - I make a note to re-visit it in a couple of days and make a decision without "impulse brain" involved. I've worked out the right amounts of shower gel, laundry detergent etc. to get the most out of the bottle. Instead of throwing out clothes and replacing them when they start looking a bit rough, I "retire" them to home-only and repair them until they wear out completely. I'm very same-y in my usual purchases so I keep a close eye on prices and stock up during sales. With things like online courses, I take note of which sites nearly always have a sale and wait (semi-)patiently for the next one so I don't pay full price. And perhaps my favourite, Fridge Fridays, which started as fridge cleanup/waste avoidance and expanded to a sweep of the house looking for "last little bits of" or "won't last much longers". I thought I'd have another year to save up for my dream workstation (for 3D work) but my old PC gave up one component at a time in the space of three days recently. Having been so frugal, I was able to afford to get a decent "in the meantime" PC to carry on working - and of course I found a good deal so I didn't need to pay full price for that either!
Very rarely will I pay full price. I usually research and then start scouting around for the best deal on that item. Even though I was gifted money for a sofa, it took me over a year and a half to figure out what I wanted in a sofa. When I found one that I thought would meet my criteria, I went to the store to make sure it was what I wanted. Then I waited another week to determine what size and I bought it for a slightly reduced price with a ten year warranty that I know the store will honor and won't be going anywhere soon. The last sofa I purchased on a highly discounted "sale". I thought was good quality and it wasn't. Although I had a warranty, it was an expensive impulsive mistake that couldn't be fixed because the store went bankrupt. That garbage sofa with the 50% off cost me twice as much as my new one. Lesson learned. Great tips!
We needed a larger chest freezer and ended up buying a damaged one for a couple hundred dollars less. It works just fine, just has a slight dent from a forklift. Who's going to care if your freezer has a dent in it lol.
I am super frugal. I will go to the end of the earth looking for super deals. If I don't need it I will not buy it. I learned this from you (Hope and Larry). Thank You I learn something new every video I watch.
I set up 2 sinking funds, one for annual costs like car rego, tyres, car services, home maintenance amd appliance or furniture replacement. It is so good to have it ready when needed. The other fund is for holiday and travel. I built a new pantry and filled it over several years, and also bought a small chest freezer, and 1 year later it is full of good meat bought on specials. I was very intentional with all this.
I just brought some dish soap, it's in a flimsy bottle and so you automatically use more when squeezing it out, I went and got my old bottle out of the bin washed it and refilled it as the plastic was a lot thicker so I'm not using as much, live all your videos, although I can't always do the things here in the UK you suggest I do find a way to adapt them.
Really hit the most important fundamentals! My quick tip contribution: I avoid the most successful consumer draws like the black plague. Wallyword is very high on that list, but once in a great while I go there. It's like a metro safari for me. I observe all the cues employed by the mainstream mind altering marketing! The colors, design, sights, sounds, and even smells? The people. The zombies? I partake, then I become anxious and can't move fast enough to get the he'll out. Satisfied to not return for an extended time!
I love using curbside pickup for that reason!! I get just what I need, and then I take one more swipe through my virtual cart to make sure I got ONLY what I needed before purchasing! It's awesome to not have to go in and shop 😀
It is about habit. If you think about how many times you make a cup of tea or coffee in a day (6 times for me)and then have that many frugal habits that's 365 x 6! So, while the kettle boils -scrape out that jar or pop that nearly expired item in the freezer or freeze that left overs (labeling it well -including a date!) or do some weight baring exercise or stretch -it all adds up, as does a penny jar!!

I think folks need to start with what’s a need and what’s a want. People think they need a new washing machine when they could get their old one fixed for $50-$100….or they think they need cigarettes …. 🤦🏼♀️ And all those $2, $4 and $6 fast food coffees can really add up. Those are not needs. I bring my own coffee with me and also a water. 😊
And along the lines of being self-sufficient like frugal people it is also very important to consider having health insurance that is stand alone insurance not based on what your employer offers another thing to do is look at insurance..
Many of the bottles that soaps come in waste product. That is, it's easy to accidentally dump out too much. I use pump bottles to dispense dish soap and body wash and squirt bottles to dispense thinner products. This way, I never use too much and avoid wasting water rinsing and rinsing
We are adding water to milk, shampoo, mouthwash, soaps, using less for showers, using cold water to wash clothes in, we have installed things on ends of faucets for less water flow, we cook using cold water, the only things we spend on are food, gas, utilities, dr., dentist, and medicine, and things that need fixed. We use smartphones to watch things and not use tv more than necessary. We buy margarine now instead of butter, eat less, drink more water,etc.

Little things add up. It is only my husband and myself at home. I bought a large toaster oven to use in the summer as to not heat up the kitchen. I find we are using it more than our conventional oven to bake in. It uses 1/2 the energy of our regular oven and is a lot easier to keep clean win/win.
I was never frugal, but I was extremely poor while I was a young soldier raising my child after divorce. I am not sure how I missed the boat, as my mom and dad were quite frugal. I have since had lots of mola go through my fingers. I always gave much of it away. I don't know, I've always felt good about it, and I think I have done alright. However, I think many people make the error that frugality is learned by poor income. I don't see that at all. Do you have a video on the differences?
When it gets low & I can’t get my face lotion through the pump, I cut off the top of the bottle to get to a lot remaining in the bottom of the dispenser!
As far as looking ahead because I'm working so much from people who are trying to get into nursing homes and can't afford it or can't qualify for Medicaid for months when they need it I have found that looking into long-term health insurance that has a specific Home Health Care Rider would save these people anguish and physical hardship by looking into getting those insurances when they are young 40 50 years old because if you wait until you're older the cost is prohibitive
Speaking of deals.....My husband is storemanager at Aldi, and he heart that another Aldi store in the town he works has a really big sale of al the one-time sales ( these are items that are not in the product range normally but only once a year). So he went there to take a look. He bought 3 vans for our childeren , so they do not have to fight over the 1 van we have now. They where 10,- euro instead of 25,-, and it wil be a christmas gift,. So nomore sneaky stealing the van from eachothers room, when one is not at home.
I am able to save by not spending. In my younger years I learned that what I could save was far more important than what I earn, and the more I saved, the less I had to work. I was able to retire at 54, rode a small motorcycle all my life, and avoided getting married and having children. I have never financed anything. That was the key for me. Now days whenever I break a 20 and get a $10 note as change, the $10 note goes to my prudent reserve for additional savings. I like meeting with other retirees who are living large like myself on social security alone.
Whirlpool! I just got a new washing machine that is a top loader and a Whirlpool. It cost about the same as my front loader did 15 years ago. My appliances are Kenmore and Whirlpool made Kenmores. I would have gotten the washing machine fixed but it was hard to get an appointment and hubby had peeled off the serial number for a prior fix. So I will baby this one and hopefully it will last us the rest of our lives. The appliance salesperson told me that the new machine wouldn't wash blankets but guess what? It does!
I’m very frugal but every time I try to find new ways to save my husband insists that it’s not necessary. He says we have never been extravagant so there is no need to tighten our budget. I disagree because harder times are coming. How do I convince him?
Not so frugal, bought TV for sister at Walmart, driving away, saw massage parlor, paid $120.00 for two-hour massage, one-hour feet, one-hour full body. I did feel I got good value for my money, may go back around Christmas time.

We had to replace our 2nd hand 20 year old dishwasher last week . I bought a 2nd hand best brand dishwasher if fb market place . I even manage to get £20 of it as it wasn’t tested! So happy with it
On the subject of owner manuals, I keep mine in a folder incase there is an error and I can check how to fix the appliance but the other reason is when I sell the item they sell faster or sometimes more money as it comes with the manual!
I have excess all over , Something breaks I go get the other one. I have a stack of e pressure cooker. Some I paid $10 for others $100 . Some are purchased for different reasons. Like my 600W PCkr it's jic I loose my house I can cook using an inverter. Lately I've been cooking with hand sanitizer. I got gallons they threw away and it's great to cook with. Usually free food now free fuel ! The pots, free , I did pay for the titanium folding stove.
My car insurance went down. I asked them how can you reduce price when everything I going up? My utilities are what is puzzling me. 3 years $100 a month average is expected, lately it's $145,130,125. I'm seriously considering sleeping in my tiny camper so I can save energy.

I like to have meals like taco bell and BK I have the means, but the price has gone up so much I just don't bother to eat out. You quit funding them they wake up and lower prices.

If I am buying something that I will use infrequently I will spend less on that item , buying at Dollar type store for instance but if I will use it daily or several times a day I will look for the best price for the higher quality item
I think frugality is making the best quality choice within our budget or saving for it, while be cheap can be very expensive because you may buy that item over and over again because it was not a quality product.
