How do I Create Speed with the Driver? - Mike Malaska - Malaska Golf

Where does Maximum Distance come from? What are the main elements of distance? How do I get more distance with less effort?
What Creating Speed is:
It is learning how to use forces correctly,
It is applying basic athletic principals,
It is getting gravity to work with you,
It is utilizing proper body motion,
It is maximizing leverage.
What Creating Speed isn't:
It is not increasing effort,
It is not adding more "tension",
It is not clearing your hips,
It is not "speeding up your backswing",
It is not "straighten your arms",
It is not "grip it and rip it"

This is so good. I’m done with the coaching which is overly focused on lines and getting precise angles at certain positions thru the swing. The feelings of momentum and fluidity are far more important.

If you've got down what he says in the first 25 seconds of this vid, the rest of it will make sense but if you don't.. You'll be chasing your tail with the rest of it. The arms and hands working properly helps the body respond correctly. If there is incorrect arms and hands influence, pushing away with the left just won't work like it should.

So, been trying to work on “ground forces” and clearing my hips, hit the ball 240-250 carry and roll. Watched Mike’s video on where speed comes from and worked on that sequence with hands and arms. The result? Played yesterday, short par 4 of 304 yards and found my ball 20 yards off the green and dead online. OK, I’m convinced.

I'm 61 with no meniscus in my left knee. I was hitting driver 180 yards at most (75-80mph club speed). Trying to get some more club speed/distance, the simple move of "getting/keeping my arms away from me" instantly got the club head speed in the 85-90mph club speed on my launch monitor. Thanks for all of your videos Mike! I really relate to your teaching.

The things you are teaching, relaxed arms and shoulders, rhythmic flowing swing, pushing with the trail leg on the backswing, taking time to let the backswing complete, pushing with the left or lead leg on the downswing, and a throwing out and away movement during the release all seem to be concepts consistent with those taught by Dr. Kwon, Director of the Biomechanics Laboratory at Texas Woman's University. He does emphasize the movement of the pelvis and lower body as the source of speed, but just like you stress, it is not a violent turn of the hips but rather the result of those two pushing movements.

All the way from Belgium I thank you very much for this Tip. Like most of the midhandicap players I know instead of turning my hips by pushing away while straightening my left knee I turned and moved my right hip forward. That is why I maybe not strugled with my driver but never had satisfying distances.👍👍

I’ll give this the world. My driving is horrible, don’t know where the ball is going and can’t control any aspect of it, can’t tell if the face will be open or shut 🤦🏻‍♂️. Many times I tee-off with my 2i. I do control my irons, but I leave a bunch of yardage on the table and this makes my par 4 approaches into the greens harder. I’m frustrated and about to give up this game that I love. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I have solved the golf swing. It is NothinG like what anybody in the entire golf world would ever think. since what i found lines up with reality even though it extremely difficult to understand since it lines up with reality it cause direct cause & effect. reality & feel then combine. What im finding is people do not want to accept reality because it makes them have to think. People dont want to think because its mental sacrifice.

Speed is only part of the story. Aside from the speed, you want to hit the ball while the clubhead is still accelerating, the toughest to achieve. Otherwise, the ball won't take off effectively!

Absolutely! We do not push off the back foot forward, we push backward with the front foot! One thing Mike has failed to mention is that the force is more sheer against the ground than it is vertical. If you feel like you're trying to slide your foot forward on the ground that will drive the front hip back. Pushing vertically will only drive it upward.
@alexanderkang7246
@alexanderkang7246 2 года назад
I don't remember which video it was, but Mike addressed this in a previous video where he had the player do a drill in which he stepped backward (away from the ball) with his right foot on the back swing and stepped backward with his left foot on the downswing. Eventually the player is supposed to develop the same feel swinging without actually moving the feet, which is basically the same thing you are talking about. I'm surprised more teachers don't emphasize this more.
@HolyGrailOfGolf
@HolyGrailOfGolf 2 года назад
@@alexanderkang7246 No one understands that sheer forces create rotation and downward force creates ... well, nothing, really. I've had many an argument with people who firmly believe the best players are actively pushing forward with the back foot ... and they maintain their belief even after I show them positively that it's an illusion and they're wrong. Some people have had the belief for so long they're unwilling to let go of it.
@alexanderkang7246
@alexanderkang7246 2 года назад
@@HolyGrailOfGolf I'm not a golf instructor so excuse my struggle to explain this adequately, but. . . Jody Vasquez wrote in his book Afternoons With Mr. Hogan that Ben Hogan's "secret" was "running his right knee at the ball" and I believe this was Hogan's way of saying and doing exactly what you're talking about, believe it or not. The move, I believe, was an angulation of the lower right leg down towards the ball, BUT with a simultaneous ROTATION of the right knee counter-clockwise. Due to the bony anatomy of the leg and hip bones, this rotation of the right leg/knee FORCES the hip to rotate counter-clockwise with the right leg. This forces the hip to open up and ASSISTS the LEFT leg in pushing the left hip BACK, not FORWARD or UP as you say. This is a pure rotational move. One of the evidences of this rotation (and maybe a reason Hogan focused on the right leg) is that if you rotate, the right foot will stay in contact with the ground from toe to heel until well after the hit, as opposed to the right heel well off the ground if you push toward the target. If you look at the impact position from the DTL view of Hogan, David Duval, or my favorite Sam Snead, you can clearly see the left hip has been pushed back severely and opened up a lot! You can FEEL the shear forces you're talking about just by looking at photos of these guys at impact.

I truly like all your videos Mike, you are a fantastic teacher but you are missing parts of the equation that add up to ultimate speed. Wish there was a way you could contact me and we could talk about the things you have not covered. Just so you know, in the 90's I had a measured ball speed of 200mph and clubhead speed of 154mph. With todays equipment I would think ball speed would be above 220 and clubhead maybe 160, although ball speed would show the largest gain. I know what it takes to hit the ball farther than almost anyone on the planet.

Good video. Sling the arms and club wth the left hip. Arms must be relaxed to sling. Get the arms, hands, and club up, up, up over the right shoulder, so you can use the force of gravity in the downswing. Mike makes the swing look very easy, but it is not so easy. Most professionals have a way of making difficult things look very easy. Nevertheless, the video is excellent.
