@athleticmotiongolf I am AMG+ member. Love the content, hitting better after a week of drills. I do think downswing intent is huge, and no one talks about it. Need more videos about starting downswing after pressure shift, and what the arms need to do. Everyone talks about pressure shift, but lead arm intent in downswing. Please let me know if I missed it on the AMG+ site.

The key thing you mentioned in this video is to not force holding the angle. That is so important. When I don't think about that, and get my hands moving faster more quickly, the club naturally lags more and I can feel more of the whip through the ball. Great video. Without that point you made, I would not have grasped the key concept.

Amazing vid and info.. just a tip for anyone trying to put this into practice... if you keep your right elbow/tricep tucked into the right side of your torso on the down swing, like the pro at 6:20, it creates the natural delay they're speaking of which will let you unload your wrists better, ramping up club head speed. It also promotes the inside out swing path even if youre hitting a fade. You can certainly over do it and start spraying shots, but a little dialing in will have you launching scuds as long as you flush it or something close to flush.

Just another Great video from you Guys. This is showing scientifically and without question what is 'actually' happening. How many coaches out there are teaching concepts which either they don't fully understand and therefore can't communicate properly or are teaching the 'feels' they have which are just that, 'feels' and isn't what is actually happening? When I've hit the ball best, the power has been just 'effortless' and has often left me puzzled as to what happened and why I've found it difficult to repeat consistently. This video should hopefully help me a lot, because who doesn't want more clubhead speed. Thanks Mike, Shaun.

I was always taught to believe that you accelerate your swing through impact and beyond; however, your video suggests that instead one should reach maximum hand speed much earlier in the downswing. Perhaps this the difference, and resulting confusion(?), between thinking about hand/arm vs. clubhead speed. Would appreciate hearing some additional insights on this concept.
@Clickumentary
@Clickumentary 3 года назад
I agree this insight is confusing to me now.. sort of antithetical to everything I try to focus on. "don't swing from the top" "accelerate through the ball", it's as if I've stepped into an alternate universe lol. I seem to have more success by letting my hands "fall" naturally from the top, not crank my hands down as fast as I can. I'm really not sure what to do with this new insight, but it's interesting.

The video analysis shows the Am’s hands coming “out” of plane when his body rotates too fast relative to his arms/hands trying to remain passive (presumably as he was instructed). This clearly illustrates one of the causes of classic “over-the-top/casting” motion.

Thanks guys! Incredible details on maximizing the hand speed EARLY to provide sufficient runway to accelerate the club head to reach maximum speed at impact. Also interesting is demystifying the myth of "holding on to lag", which has been plaguing the golf community for the past 30 years and hindering club golfers' ability to swing faster.

Love the video guys. I'm addicted to data driven golf swing analysis like this. I know I lose my angles way too soon in the downswing and have a strong hit impulse that is been the hardest thing to overcome. I'm certain my hand speed is fine, it just tragically comes at the wrong time (at transition) robbing me of distance while costing more effort. Would you say that most pros reach maximum hand speed at or near the trail hip/belt area like at 4:36? I just fear that the takeaway of hands moving faster, sooner doesn't fit for me.
@jdw6580
@jdw6580 4 года назад
Guys, this might be your best video yet. Mind blown. Not only by the fact that pro hands max out earlier, but also HIGHER. For years I've been trying to accelerate my hands through the ball with a concept that the hands reach max speed PAST the ball (but before impact due to shaft lean). This was an amazing reality check. Actually tried this on my carpet (my wife hates AMG now) and by focusing on earlier acceleration, I got a much more powerful feeling and a faster "whoosh" of the club at the bottom of the swing. Can't wait to try this at the range! Thank you!!

This reminds me a lot when Tiger and Butch Harmon was on golf channel. During his lesson, Tiger said one thing that changed the way I played. Tiger said “feel like his hand is winning the race” as tiger tried to avoid the old “o’lay” move. Took me a log time to understand what he was trying to do, but over time it made me a better ball striker. The down side was it turn my fade into a 3 yard draw. This video brought back memories. But a very good video. Took 6-8 months to undo that early hip rotation that made my swing stuck and/or early release.

I am 72 and have been having trouble (of course) loosing distance. Just a week or so ago I realized I was just swinging with my hands and arms. So, I figured I'd concentrate on turning my body a little more, back and then through. What do you know?! I gained about 30 yards on my tee shots, and my irons were much longer and more solid... So, I'm I little skeptical about moving the hands faster on the downswing. That would lead me to believe the fastest way to increase your hand speed is to rotate your body faster.

WOW, this video together with the video about “Create LAG In Your Golf Swing” by having your arms more in front of the chest in the back swing have increased my average driver club head speed by 4 mph in one day (from 97 to 101). It was even more noticeable in my irons where the speed of i7 increased by 6 mph. It also puts my hands in a better position at impact. Very interesting. Not sure though, why faster hands earlier means better lag angle. Is it just that the centrifugal effect has had less time to take place or (my theory) that pulling down with both hands actually has the effect of pulling that angle tighter, so reducing, for a short time, the centrifugal effect?

@@AthleticMotionGolf @Kevin Smith It's the same concept if someone asked you to throw a baseball as hard as you can without thinking about it, just do it. Your body is amazing at making all the correct athletic compensations to produce a desired movement if you just let it happen. You'll probably have great body sequencing when the only thought in your head was "move this baseball as fast as I can." I think most golf instructors teach the downswing backwards, as in most say what they want you to do FIRST. When in fact, if you focus mostly on the outcome you want, or what you want to happen LAST (i.e. move my arms/hands as fast as I can), then just like the baseball, your body will naturally and athletically sequence itself to get to your desired outcome.

Think lot of people are going to go to range and start these quick jerky downswings that burn up speed too quickly instead of accelerating their clubs. This might be where too much info necessarily isn't good thing or beneficial.

When increasing the hand speed as you mention, is that from rotation? My hands are typically the last thing to begin back toward the ball in my downswing. I just want to know if that means I need "faster hands" or if this is a result of rotation.

Guys, you have the best golf instruction channel out there, and I have watched a lot of them. One word you often use is “byproduct.” You could create a single master instruction video by separating the phenomena in the golf swing into keys and byproducts. So much golf instruction focuses on the byproducts, which is obviously counterproductive. Teach us the keys to focus on and make clear what the byproducts are that we should observe but NOT train for.

@Randsurfer
@Randsurfer 4 года назад
That would have been a good final 3 minutes for this video because thinking "faster, earlier" will cause many people problems. The amateur being shown in this video received a lesson to make this happen. It would be good to know what exactly he was told to do. What exactly he was told to guard against, etc. How did he hold his lag without 'trying' to hold his lag? There must have been some drills or physical sensations that were suggested to help this amateur make it happen correctly. Other than that, the mechanics and data shown are pretty awesome.

I'd imagine it'll be a hard for amateurs to increase the hand speed at the start of the downswing as most amateurs will surely cast the club more, due to lack of trail hand wrist cup and not getting the trail elbow down and in front of the hip.

It shouldn't be. You can easily move your hands super fast without casting and without holding the angle. To feel how to do this, from the top of the swing take your lead hand off the club, lay the club on your arm and shoulder and leave it there while you swing your hand as fast as you can.

This is a great video and explanation. This past weekend as I was scrolling through You Tube I was seeing more then a few recent videos done by teachers who are talking about slowing the hands down. I was getting nauseous watching those videos. Don’t know if this is totally correct, but my thought was faster hands, slower body. Watching the swings I had on video, I did not notice my body not reacting properly even though I had that swing thought of slowing the body down. My hands also looked better at checkpoint 6. Not lagging behind the body too much.

Great lesson. Read all the viewer comments and your replies as well. I think the pro I take lessons from may be after the same thing as you are in this video when he wants me to make a faster backswing as opposed to a slower backswing followed by a fast downswing. If I understand correctly, he is looking for a more matching rhythm in both the backswing and downswing, rather than a slow backswing and a rushed, strenuous downswing. If I understand your video, that faster backswing, assuming relaxed arms and hands and the correct light grip, would produce the better angle at the top (90 something degrees), and moving quickly from that into the downswing would produce the earlier maximum hand or grip speed that creates the higher clubhead speed at impact. There are of course many other things that you have shown in your excellent videos that one should do. For example: rotating the hips by pulling the right hip back rather than turning the left hip out toward the ball; turning the shoulders on the backswing and keeping the club in front of you, the pros move, rather than folding your arms across your chest and getting the club stuck behind you; turning the chest and shoulders fully on the backswing (the back to the target concept); setting the shaft on plane by making the right wrist extended or palm up (I am right handed) and the left wrist straight or slightly flexed; dropping the arms down at the start of the downswing as you said the pros do rather than out toward the ball; and maintaining the spine angle and not standing up and pushing the hips out toward the ball. Lots of things you show and recommend, all good.
@TheNYgolfer

John K. Atchley- When you look at classic swings like those of Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Walter Hagen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus (in his prime) Mickey Wright etc., you will notice they all had relatively fast backswings and even faster downswings and they looked like they did not hold back any power in their full swings. It was a 100 percent effort swing. Reason for that is that a faster backswing creates greater inertia in the clubhead as it goes back. This greater inertia does 2 things in the transition. It will create a greater resistance to the change in direction, which increases lag, and that increased resistance stresses the shaft. The more violent the transition the greater the stress will be on the shaft and the greater the lag, which kind of gives some validity to the claim that reaching max hand speed earlier creates more clubhead speed. Yet I think of Hogan in the past, and Mickelson currently, along with most long drive champions, and marvel at how deep into the downswing they hold a 90 degree lag angle. Much deeper than the model here, which tells me that they are reaching max hand speed later , rather than earlier. They are deliberately holding off the release (with soft hands) until physics takes over and centripetal/centrifugal force is allowed to do it's magic.
@johnk.atchley5079
@johnk.atchley5079 4 года назад
@@TheNYgolfer Thanks for taking the time to comment. I think the pro I take lessons from holds the same idea you express here. I can see where the increased lag produced by inertia and the stress on the shaft can make the clubhead travel faster at impact. One concern for me at age 78 of course is you have to make sure you don't swing so hard and fast that you sacrifice balance. I have found that, recalling several AMG lessons, if I focus on getting my hands into a good position at the top of the backswing, which involves turning the chest and keeping the arms out in front rather than folding the arms across the chest too much (one of the AMG lessons with avatar illustrated the big difference between pros and amateurs on this count), making sure my right wrist is extended and the left wrist flexed so that the shaft is on plane(a la Duohnson but nowhere near so extreme), making sure to get the upper part of my right arm up a little higher to get a fuller backswing (without changing the angles between the arms or chest and arms) , and then, finally, starting my hands and arms downward sharply (another AMG lesson showing pros started by moving their arms down while amateurs were already beginning to swing out and around), all without uncocking the wrists early, that gives me higher, longer and straighter shots with both the driver, 3W, utility club, and all irons, from 3 to wedges. Again, thanks.

Does the increased and “quicker” hand speed come from a conscious effort to pull the hands down harder in the downswing?
@AthleticMotionGolf
@AthleticMotionGolf 4 года назад
It's a fairly natural thing to do, Mike. But we find that intent is the biggest roadblock causing it to be slower than it needs to be. Using the arms, for some reason, has gotten to be a phobia for many golfers. It's hard to make the arms and hands move faster earlier if you don't use them. The best in the world use them.

A very clear example and explanation! I get that you need to accelerate the hands couple and grip as wuickly as you can in the downswing. Could you please explain though, what level of effort the golfer makes with his hands from their fastest point through to the finish. Do you continue to try to move the hands fast through impact or does the speed generated intially allow the hands to free wheel through without conscious effort. Is the golfer trying to pull or push the grip through to the target or just letting everything release from left arm parallel? Hopeful for some clarification. Best regards from Richard (🇦🇺)
