Thank you Tim, that is the clearest way of explaining finding your own style that I have come across.

Stop trying to develop a style. Develop your skills. You already have a style, you just may not be able to execute your vision. Just paint, or sculpt, or whatever you do. Skills will allow your voice to be heard.

I agree that developing the skills and mastering composition are the important first step to any artists development... as I state in the video. Once that has been accomplished developing a unique voice is the next step if an artist wants to achieve their ultimate potential. No offence ... but it looks like you made your comment without actually watching the video😊

@@timpackerfinearts I did make my comment without watching the video. Well meaning people, like yourself, make these kind of videos all the time. For the most part they are useless. In all my years if teaching, I have never seen students with duplicate styles to their work. Similar, yes. What these people are really asking is.... I see your success so what do I copy to have that success. That is where the art world is failed. The are work is struggling because students are not encouraged to find their own way. They are pushed into creating for profit. The real profit for the artist is the growth and development from trying. Without individual development, art will become obsolete and decorative, only.

I guess there is no point engaging in a debate with someone who has not even listened to what I have said. Have a nice day😊

Just finished the intro bit of your video, just wanted to say thank you so much. To share your perspective and opinion is so selfless and could be very important to artists that wish to be successful, so once again - thank you.

Hi Tim, I'm in the stage of trying to paint in the style of some of my favourite artists. Is it still possible to sell the paintings I make since they are based on my own reference photos? Or is copying the colour palette from an existing painting still a copywright issue?

Dear Tim, am in my baby shoes if it comes discovering my niche. My flow brings to the more traditional far east single brush stroke style. (Sumi E). Colour isn't my forte but I do like to develop my shading insight and skill. Feel inspired by Modigliani and Monnet but feel more for the abstract of things. I feel like when I get inspired and focus it comes but sometimes letting go works equally fine. Inspiring words, like a motivational speech to proceed rather than to give up.

As a watercolor artist I watched my idols Joseph.Z and Alvaro paint and then I went on to figure my own way out, ironically I find going from dark to light easier for myself as it lets the darker tones set the stage for the rest of the painting. Totally backwards but it works.

one great think about developing a process that is different from the majority is that it often gives the work a distinctive look👍

Yeah I agree ...art clones are never the end goal, watching someone else’s process and picking out parts of the process that you could add to your unique process

Seeking out influences and studying other artists is recommended by many teachers. I think some teachers expand possible influences to music, nature, writing. Whatever floats your boat and inspires you.

Exactly😊👍 there are so many similarities between all of the creative fields. We can also learn from the practices and work habits of creatives in other disciplines.👍

Personally, I would recommend a slight tweak to your advice. I think artists should begin exploring their art parents or influences on day 1. There are so many good lessons you can learn even before you have the chops to do high level master studies.
@timpackerfinearts

That makes sense as long as they also focus on mastering the basic skills. I have seen a lot of aspiring artists who just go from one instructor to another trying their techniques... without ever having developed drawing skill or learning about composition. As you might expect all they ever achieve is poor copies of their instructors style that exhibit a lack of competence and many compositional weaknesses.👍
