You know, you guys are the 1st people I’ve actually felt like you know what you’re talking about when it comes to birds of all species. I’ve had birds a long time - growing up and then bigger as I’ve become an adult. I’m old now - early 50s but have come across so many “specialists” who have said one thing and I’ve experienced another. So,for the most part, I’ve taken the specialists information together and kind of generalized everything - hope this is understandable. I make up my own ways with a mixture of what I have learned. I guess what I’m saying, in a long way, is I don’t have to dissect your info and figure out what works. It’s pretty right on. And I truly appreciate that. So, keep it up and thank you! I hope one day we could cross paths. And thank you for your work with the birds & for teaching others. Be safe during these times - the birds need you and so do we!!!

lol, mine is a 1250 grams and does not even have any flightmuscles (female B&G, normal, not obese, healthy bird with wingissues). Rule of thumb: handraised birds almost always end up smaller and lighter as adults than normal parrentfed birds.

That would have been an monsterbird indeed! :D My non-flighted B&G (so not that much muscleweight as she should have) is a kilo and a quarter (1250 grams in real grams, not freedom units). We breed 'm large around here. (Parent-raised birds always grow taller and heavier than handraised ones, maybe that is where the discrepancies come from?) No I do not clip her wings, she is a rescue and got stuck in a too small cage for far too long before she ended up in my place. (3 years of careful fysiotherapy and she is now able to open her wings past the halfway mark, still work in progress).

Mine just take off or signal they want to. It is easy, like kids pushing the plate away from them at dinner when they are feeling full. But I think mine are part duck ;D , some of the time I stop them showering because I have other things to do/ start to prune up (showering together/ flockwise behaviour/ but not at the same time -> 1 showerhead, 3 birds, 1 human...we are in there a long, long time). One of the greys and the macaw sometimes just love to soak (or marinate? themselves) and will sit there (indefinitely ?) and will protest when I interrupt.

Also if your bird is really scared of a spray bottles try bottles with different colours. Have a rescue Amazon parrot and he didn't like the spray bottle at all! I had a white one but then I got a blue one and he was suddenly totally okay with it and now loves to get a shower.

I just got my first bird, a 2 year old scarlet macaw, a month ago. She is terrified of the shower and spray bottle. I’ve tried a large bowl too and she isn’t having it. She will get there! I just took mine into the bathroom a few times without anything going on, just to let her get used to the room. the next time I opened the tap (sink), played with the water and that was it. After that I did the same with the shower, turn on, play a bit with my free hand, turn it off again, leave. After that she got to watch (siitng on the sink, safe distance) while I was having a short shower etc.etc.. The one thing she really freaks out about: if people stare at her all the time to see how she reacts. So I took a gamble and ignored her during those times and focused on describing things, touching things, tapping on them etc.etc.. (you feel by the clinching of the feet how a bird is feeling about something anyway, so you don't actually have to watch them) It is amazing how much their mood improves after a good soak :) Don't give up, you guys have just met/ moved in together. (It took mine a few months after rescue to even go out of her cage, you are starting way ahead of me!)

@@SATANFUCKSMYSOUL depending on the species it came be. Scarlett was my rosella, she passed away in 2020, and she lived a very good life imo 😊 she was fed fresh foods every day, had a huge cage for sleeping in and the rest if the day was able to hang out on the play gym and fly around. She developed a tumor on her cheek and while we could have done a lot of invasive treatments, she was not friendly and having to treat a wound and medicate her would have stressed her out to the point of causing her more harm than good. My vet and I decided it was best to just let her be her happy self, monitor what I could and keep her comfortable. Scarlett was with me for 14 years, she was sold as a failed breeder at 6 years old and as many breeder birds do she could have ended up in another, then another, then another breeding facility getting little in the way of individual care, instead she came to college with me, back home again, and I miss her to this day. Don't assume that just because parrots can have very long lives means that all of them will. I have no idea what her first 6 years of life were but I made sure the test of them were filled with toys, fresh air, healthy foods and friends to sing with

A good trick I’ve found for encouraging small birds (particularly budgerigars) is a shallow dish of water with some freshly picked grass thrown in. It seems to encourage them into the water as they can stand on it without really sinking and really flutter about getting themselves wet.

Cat / small dog water drinking fountain. I went with the isYoung Cat Fountain. Birds seem to love it as well. It is moving water, with the flower thing in the middle letting you get a sort of stream going they can bath themselves or drink from it any time. Just be so so careful on which one of these you do get, some are seriously not made with birds in mind, and have sharp holes around the rim that bird toes can and will get stuck in, which can end up in broken toes / nails. (the stainless steel models all seem to have this issue). I am currently working with a 6 year old cockatiel who needed a re home. I highly suspect he was punished with a water bottle (he also has serious hand aggression, that I am trying to curb). For a few days I just had the water bottle in the room. He didn't seem to care to much till I picked it up, so I would do that, and just set it back down. It may also help that I have 2 parakeets who loooove spray bottle time. They even try to drink water droplets from the air as they trickle down. The cockatiel sees this, and becomes a lot more interested in what is going on. All 3 of them are starting to not mind each other being so close to one another, so when I go to bath my 2 parakeets now some of the water is bouncing off them onto the cockatiel. He is no longer freaking out or flying off. This took me almost 2 weeks to do, but I also sleep and hang out in the same room as them all day. I also spray around him waaay high in the air sometimes, just so a little mist gets on him. I haven't gotten a bathing response yet, but we are still working on that! Oh, yes I should also add, I use millet. That only worked after I increased the treat value of it though, he was free fed all seeds and millet for 6 years. Now that he is on a better diet of veggies in the morning, and pellets in the afternoon, he has a much higher response to doing things for millet :D

Hi!! First, I just want to say that I love your videos! They've helped me with my fearful little Jenday girl sooo much. She was given to me for free a few years ago because the lady who rescued her couldn't get her adopted out. She was so tiny and underweight and extremely 'aggressive'. I had lost my dusky conure just a few weeks before and needed something to pour love into just as much as she needed someone to love her. Flash forward a few years( and almost all of your videos) later and she's doing SO much better! By using what I learned from you and Dave I've been getting her switched over to a better diet and that extreme 'agression'(which was really just extreme fear) has been getting so much better as I work on desensitization( also learned from you😉). So all that's to say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! With that being said I'm hoping you guys can come to my rescue again! I recently started doing indoor flight training with Lydia to help her confidence(it's so crazy awesome to see the change in her demeanor!) And now I'm stuck because anytime I have her out of the cage to hangout she's constantly trying to fly to be on my shoulder( a practice I recently stopped). While I'm stoked that she's more confident In flight you'd think I was abandoning her on a roadside with the way she reacts when i leave her out on her stand. How do I encourage her to overcome her separation anxiety? And I know parrots are flock animals so when I mean separation I'm like literally 10 feet away on the couch. I'd love any tidbits you can give me!❤

I used to think my bird hated bathing because she would only be okay with a very light mist, but one day, one of her toys fell into her water bowl, and she tried to get it out but fell in instead. I guess she had some sort of revelation because now she loves dunking herself in her water bowl whenever I put in fresh water! So maybe if your bird doesn’t seem to like bathing, try putting toys that they like in some shallow water to get them used to it 🐥

I've actually been taking my Amazon in the shower with me lately. He doesn't want to get wet just yet, but he'll sit there, watching me (lil' perv) and just make all the sounds and noises he knows. So he seems pretty comfortable with just being there, but as soon as I move him closer to the spray, so that he can walk under it if he wants, he gets quiet and just looks at me like I'm about to drown him. But oh well, he'll get there... And the other day, as I was vacuuming, he suddenly wanted to bathe, so I got the spray bottle (which he really doesn't like) and it was all fluffed, wings up, the whole nine yards! So... Maybe turn on the vacuum in the shower..?? XD

Our female eckie likes spray bottles and light blow drying on a cool setting. The CAG likes rolling around in her water bowl and misting in the shower. Our parrotlets are still a work in progress, so the greens are a good idea to try. So far, they've been offered shallow dishes to bathe in and that's been somewhat successful, buy could be better. They're hardest to read and, like most birds, will resort to washing their faces in their water dispensers if we don't pick up on their clues. Enjoyed the video!

I used to clip a good-sized wet bunch of herbs like cilantro or dill to the side of my budgie's cage and my girl would go nuts shoving herself in the bunch and rubbing herself all over the leaves. The other way my budgies love to bathe is in a shallow dish with some greens in it and cold water just covering the top of the leaves. Usually, I'll use spinach for this, or occasionally grated carrots (even though this dyes them orange for the day haha). They'll also have a nibble on any greens in the dish.

Very useful thank you. I have two budgies one who loves the spray bottle, Eric and one who gets aggressive, Doris. It is too early to get the birds moved into the bathroom for a shower, so that is why I am using a spray bottle right now. I decided to use the 'white noise' technique, i.e. the vacuum cleaner. However, my birds are very used to that noise so I decided to find Thunderstorm Sounds on RU-vid. I was looking for a unique trigger to indicate it was getting wet time. It worked a treat! First time I tried it Eric was less excited but still enjoyed the experience and Doris was not aggressive at all, in fact she fluffed up her feathers and didn't move away, which is what she used to do. Well done Birdtricks!!!! So many of your suggestions have worked for us. Big thumbs up!!!!

Remember what Jamieleigh told us about Living In An Apartment. We cannot have parrots in apartments, because of the neighbours, since some parrots scream alot when they're happy, and we cannot make them less happy, for the sake of the silence!!! Maybe, if you live in a small block, you can ask all the neighbours, for permission, and explain, that they can scream so the glasses crush in 1000 pieces, almost! Maybe they're cool, and let you have parrots. But, then maybe, after some time, the neighbours get really tired of the noice, and say:"You must get those birds out of here!" THEN, what to do? So be smart, and never get a parrot, if you live in a flat!! I hope you live in a nice house! 🍀🦜🏡🏕️

I'm trying your method to get him not to be afraid of being sprayed but in the meantime I've discovered a way to get him to bathe in his dish more often. I put my hand inside the water dish and "grab" a bit of water, then take it out and let it drip in the water dish. I do this several times until I see a good reaction. He sees the drops of water and sometimes it splashes towards him and he gets all puffed and ready to bathe. As soon as I take my hand off the dish he runs there and bathes : )

Hi, JamieLeigh! What brand of Aloe do you put in the bathwater and how much! My cockatiel, Beenie, hates baths since we moved into my room in my Sister's/nephew's house in late August 2019. I admit I have been nervous and maybe that's why he hates it. That's probably why he doesn't like it - because I'm nervous. When I lived in my other place for 8 years, he let me give him a spray mist bath more often but wouldn't let me get him very wet - hardly ever. I was probably nervous then too. It's been a rough many years since my Mom got sick in 2001 with heart disease and died in 2011 and up until now. It wasn't very warm either in my apartment for 8 years. I'm going to try really hard with your suggestion. I will also try to do it when it isn't noisy too. My room is right next to the kitchen. I have been waiting for my apartment on a waiting list since 2016 in Burien, so I hope it won't be too much longer. It might only be a matter of months because I called 2 months ago and they said I am near the top of the list. I'm praying it won't be much longer. I found my clicker too that I bought many years ago!!! It is 20- years ago just about when I bought the clicker! I will have to get him use to the clicker noise too. I hope I will be much calmer there. I will have to work on being calmer here as well. Love, big hugs, birdie kisses. Barb, Beenie, Baby spirit! PS. I loved seeing Bandit and Bondi together and Cressie! They were all so cute together! :)))

Weird: -> My greys HATE water in/on their heads near the eyes/ nares etc. , the macaw will plunk her entire head under water for longer periods than just a quick dip (yes even in the bath) for fun! Macaw: on a fore-arm sharing a shower, relaxing (she sometimes even falls asleep there, plunked against my chest / in the morning!) or (very active but short lived) splashing away in a huge bath, waterlevel anything from 2 tot about 4.5 inches/ 5-12 cm. deep max.. (She is a very large bird so no problems there; and I am always with her at those times.) African grey: on the shoulder, sharing a shower (protesting if I move too soon) or running in and out the largest dogdrinking bowl I could find that still fits through the door of the cage, trying to take a bath, but it is just too small to really get the job done...but he keeps trying! I keep trying the misting-bottle ( tried several of different types already) on hot days: they don't mind the water but really, really object to the sounds it makes.... LOL Since my 3 are obviously more or less out of their minds (rescues with shady pasts), not sure if this information is in any way relevant ;) (sorry about the typoos)

I’m going to buy from your website, are your training programs videos as well or mainly manuals? You guys are great, down to earth, easy to understand and just seem like an all around great couple! Thanks for putting all of this out there.. it really helps a new MacawMama! Xox

We have three Kakarikis who bath in a water bowl that attaches to the side of the cage. We change the water every time we change the rest of the water. It’s warm water and most of the time when we change it they get in straight away because it warm and all three love it. Edit: they bath when ever they want to

My four cockatiels only bathe when my blowdryer ist running 😄 They don't like dishes, bowls, sinks or the shower. I can only bathe my two oldest with the blowdryer running while they're on their playstand. I don't blowdry my birds, but with their preferences in mind they usually take a bath when I blowdry my hair. My two Youngest loooooove to bathe while sitting on my head .... sooo most of the time I shower "twice", blowdry my wall (hold the blowdryer away from my birds) and need to change my clothes afterwards 😂 I hope you can understand my faulty Englisch 😅 Love from Germany 🤗🦜

I have two sun conures who grew up with taking showers multiple times a week, so they never had a problem with it...🤷‍♀️ I started out with a spray bottle, but now I usually use the hose because I live in South Africa (it's usually warm or hot here) and they're in their outside aviary most of the time anyways 🌴☀️ They love their baths and even request them sometimes by spreading their wings in a 'ready for bath!' motion 🚿👍 The weather outside definitely influences if and when they wanna bath as well... Sometimes hearing thunder really far away makes them wanna bath. In general, the less it rains, the more showers they request. Makes sense, I think 😄🥰 🧡💛💚💛🧡

You buy them from breeders of course. (there are a lot of them out there, some very good ones but also a lot not to be trusted / look up parrotmills and there are a few well known seller-names that are actually the worst humans alive) So when the time comes -do your homework (read forums etc.etc.) and maybe opt for an adult as a first bird: they have setled personalities already (no surpises after puberty) and you cannot ruin their upbringing; large parrots outlive humans on a regular base and they all really deserve a good second, third etc. home. (my birds were and are 4th, 7th and even more multiple-owned-birds and overall utterly great parrots. They just had some rotten luck.) so maybe: adopt, don't shop

My little sun conure was very wary when young and preferred to be in my cupped hands with very low flow. She’s a bit of a scaredy bird overall for new things. I found that having her with me when I do dishes or brushed my teeth without directly offering her a bath (cupped hands) and ‘ignoring her fluffing I want a bath behavior’ helped her to take matters into her own hands and climb down into different sinks in the house. She eventually graduated to also using the bird bath outside in a screened in porch after she watched me fill it in the sink. Shower perch is next, but she seems NOT interested at all. I have to say I have never tried a spray bottle.

Hey Jaime, I dont know if you can give me some advice but worth a shot 😊 my partner's parents have a Senegal parrot, and have asked a few times if we would like to have her. The problem is, she bites, she isn't handled and is never let out of the cage, 5+ years they have had her. She's about 10 years old. I wouldn't love to have her but I'm also scared of her and I have no experience with birds but I'm very patient and love all animals. I looked after her for a week while they were on holiday and she seemed pretty relaxed but still wasn't keen on me touching the cage to change water and feed, a couple times actually coming at me. Half the time she seemed ok with me passing her a peice of food through the bars. I talked to her and had her in the main living area so she could watch us. I felt like we bonded somewhat. I would love to home her but also scared of her.do you think it would ever be possible? ♥️

Im not Jaime but i think everything is possible with A LOT of patience, small steps, and good training & reflexion. What you already did sounds awesome! If he associates your presence as a good thing you will see him approaching maybe just a little more. My bird and i took a year to get were we are now. (she never bites me anymore, she trust me, she steps up everywhere, i can go all around and over the cage with my hands, but still can't touch her & thats fine)

No bird should be given up on. It's never too late to help.. if you are willing to put all the time, effort, patience, and money into caring for and training that lol birdie then you definitely should. Since from the sound of it the parents are not caring for that bird as they should, hence why it has those issues in the first place. If you can recognise that it needs your help, and follow the tutorials and training and such on this channel, you will be ok. :) It's worth trying to help, i think. You two will both be scared of each other, but you can both work through it and become lifelong friends.

Some birds have/show! a completely different personality outside the cage than in (somehow they learned to 'defend' their cage as if it was nesting season and it is their personal space) so they may be actual fun in 'public space' versus little monsters inside one. I do not go with the american idea of 'my home is my castle' and "it is the only place a bird feels safe" so I am voicing an unpopulair opinion here: a bird should learn/experience that outside the cage is just as much fun and safety as inside, and courtious behaviour on their part is expected when I am inside the cage 'visiting' (so: no biting!) If that bird is one of those 'nice outside- nasty inside' animals, work with it outside the cage first and take the training inside after you are okay with each other. (sometimes clickertraining inside the cage first is a great idea if you are nervous about each other). LOL I met a friendly senegal a few weeks ago and I was terrified I would break that bird: soooo tiny! (compared to my macaw) Beaksize is all relative to what you know ;) but being bit is never any fun! Try not to fear it, just a bit of broken skin will heal. Everyone will get bit eventually (by accident, out of fright, because something crazy happens, when yo do not pay as much atention as you should have etc.etc.).

My baby cockatiel loves baths and will try bathing in her water bowl - sometimes she begs for a bath by trying to wet herself and holding out her wings so I will get the spray bottle and give her a few sprays. She loves it. My adult cockatiel is another story. He refuses to bathe. I’ve tried a water bowl at the bottom of the cage, the spray bottle, and wet leaves. So far the wet leaves worked the best but he is also afraid of the leaves sometimes so that also isn’t the best solution. He isn’t tame so I can’t bring him out of the cage and into the shower or sink. I don’t know what to do and I’m trying to get some ideas but I’m lucky at least one of my birds likes to bathe. I am going to try some different types of dishes at the bottom of the cage (so far I’ve tried a plastic bird bath and a stainless steel water bowl) I have another stainless steel bowl that’s much larger and deeper but I figured the shallow bowls would be better since he’s not a fan of getting wet. I can’t tell if he’s afraid or just not enjoying it - he moves away when I try to spray him. I will also try pairing the spray bottle with treats as suggested and adding some wet greens to the water bowl at the bottom of the cage. The only time I got a bathing response from him or saw him initiate some kind of bathing was with a wet basil leaf that I was offering as a snack. Anyone have any ideas as to what might work for him?

my Alexandrine always needs to get over a roadbump it seems. I put her in the shower with me, she will get wet but she rarely puts out her wings/start bathing then, but the moment i put her on top of the shower door she goes all crazy about the water, hanging almost upside down all floofy and then i have to splatter the water up up up, over her (my bathroom becomes a swimmingpool yeah...). I laugh my as off and she won't stop to wiggle the tailfeathers and run over de top of the showerdoor/walls with her wings spread. That's the way it works for her. If i do not wet/take her in de shower with me first and just put her on top of the door, she will not bathe. Bathing is great to also see how the feathers are growing (she was very bad rougly clipped before i got her & now she is regrowing finally :D )

I know where there is a blue McCaw and he gets a bath with a spray bottle but his feathers look all bedraggled afterwards. I wondered if they could use a blow dryer. Looks terrible. Instead of using a suction cup perch you can use a shower rod that goes all the way across and is really tight and removable. I remember seeing a house that had a giant room connected on to it it was a bird aviary.
