The Most HORMONAL Macaw I've EVER Seen!

This female blue and gold macaw named Rio was sold as a "two year old macaw"... when more research went into how many past homes she'd had, how she had been kept and for how long, as well as researching the type of leg band she had, we found out she was much older (20+ years likely older!) and kept almost exclusively as a breeder bird. Birds kept as breeders can have a much harder time converting to pets than birds who have always been kept as a pet but just had bad human experiences. There are always exceptions, of course, but most breeder birds have never had the benefit of a human-bird relationship and so have little interest in trying to bond with a human.

I feel so sorry for her. Imagine having your babies taken away from you every single time. No wonder she‘s so aggressive. Good for her she found such a caring owner!

And possibly her mate? I know it's a necessary separation in order to for the bird move on to much better situation with health and the hopeful possibility that they will bond with human,but it's also heart wrenching to think about what they go through missing their loved one; if they were in fact bonded to the bird they were put together to "make the babies":I know it's not always the case,bc they may not even click.

He has such a beautiful home! For humans and the bird. You can tell he really wants the best for her. I hope he keeps up the hard work. Breeder birds are so hard to retrain 😬
@ambernakys1788
@ambernakys1788 4 года назад
Haha hard work is an understatement. I have an ex breeder ( 15 years as a breeder) who is also a special needs and man oh man..although he is spoiled rotten, sometimes I sit back and wonder what I got myself into with him. But I am his forever home and he will never know what it's like to have his cage closed up, or to be outside in a breeding pen again.

@@blamekatie Thank you. He had a less than stellar life. When he was a hatchling he was "tossed" or fell out of his nesting box which severely broke his leg. It healed twisted so he walks like a "pimp" lol. He was at the breeding facility for over 15 years, but because he couldn't get anything chicks from him, he was eventually retired and sent to an actual Parrot rescue, where he sat for another four years. Parrot rescues are great however they are so overwhelmed with parrots and birds, that simple things such as toys and human contact is limited. So he sat in a noisy room full of cockatoos with no human contact and no toys. Those that were interested, would put the effort in to gain his trust, and then abandon him because he wasn't "pretty" and because he was a special need. So when I was told about him, it was very unexpected and drove almost 2 hours to go visit him. I sat with him for the entire day and just kinda hung out. I saw something in Nemo that other people didn't. I knew it was hard enough for normal birds to get adopted, but a special needs breeder? What chance did he honestly have? So I took the plunge. Twice a week for about one and a half months, I drove 2 hours there and home to go visit him. He's really a goofball, even though he won't let me touch him at all, but with so many people failing him, i can understand why its difficult to get his trust. I had to teach him how to play with toys and now his cage is full of them. His cage is never locked up. I fought for him by having in house inspections and post-screenings, because nobody else ever fought for him. Now he is happy, he has a huge cage in my bedroom where i spend most of my time doing college things. And he is never home alone, even if im not there. Because he has to have his wings clipped ( medical reasons) we take him to the park where he loves to watch the little kids play and talk to him, stretch himself in the sun..so yes..he definitely has a good life now.. even though I can pet or touch him much LOL.

What amazed me was the fact that when you switched target sticks...not only did the bird go from aggressive to accepting, it was moving in a way to show that you could trust her as well. She was making slow and predictable moments. That whole exchange just after the stick switch was amazing to watch.

Rio is a gorgeous full size female B&G with perfect feathering and long tail with no damage. She's very well taken care of and preens herself beautifully. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! I went and read Rio's bio that you posted and her leg band should have a serial number on it, as all breeder's are required to band every bird born in their aviary in most States. These are also recorded and submitted to the local health department or State wildlife association that most States require be registered and pay a county tax, ($10) year, so they know how many wild bird's are being bred in captivity. This should give her age and breeder information. There's no way I would have believed she was 2 year's old as many B&G's under 3 still have baby bird mannerisms for the majority of their interactions with other's. I don't know why I'm even typing this since you've been doing this forever and know this stuff. The band on her leg is what made me think of it since my B&G was banded from her Florida breeder, all the birds were, and documented with the county even coming out and doing inspections to ensure the bird's were well cared for and the aviary was hygienic. This gentleman had several mated bird's listed as on the extinct list & would take in rescues for rehabilitation & worked with the Govt on maintaining population of exotic birds, especially one's that were listed as critical in nature. I'm sure most of the breeder's that do leg band's are also required to maintain records on their bird's.

I have a 20 yr old male WB Caique that is so hormonal! Oh, nothing is spared from being humped in his cage, barbs feathers, dances and cries!!! I found making a strong chammomile water for his water bowl and bathing time works in 2-3 days to relax him to be a more calm, stable companion. He still is a bouncy, bundle of energy, just not aggressive and stressed out. I tried everything on the market, believe me! So far this has worked for me.

My Blue and Gold Tico was a breeder bird but he failed at it. The breeder human said he didn't take to the female (all while stroking him down the back). After a few days we realized he was extremely hormonal with me, in particular. We've had him about six weeks now and while his behaviors have calmed down quite a bit, he's now more comfortable straying away from his cage and has started trying to nest under his cage, under our bed and has built nests out of our clothes on the ground. I feel bad for him and I feel like I can't spend time with my bird without triggering him.

My blue and gold macaw, Winnie, kept laying eggs and nesting and became egg bound. I had to sit in a warm bath with her on my chest so the steam would help her pass the egg. She finally did. The vet then suggested a hormone shot - that was what stopped the obsessive nesting behaviour.

Thank you for sharing this video. Jamieleigh, your calm, soft voice and demeanor and slow approach without pushing the issue is why the bird was more receptive to you. Dave, why did you leave your cap on? Your presence was intimidating and assertive, and the cap just intensified her fears. Hopefully he will not feed the bird the egg diet too often. It's not a good idea to feed egg and soft foods to a hormonal parrot, which can exacerbate hormonal surges. It's nice to know that the bird is given a chance for a quality of life.

This is my experience with the sanctuary I worked at for four years. I suspect many of the issues here are similar and can be avoided…. So many people do things for birds that really arent good in the long run with the best intentions…. I stopped working because I honestly got to the point of having nightmares aboit being attacked. People loved giving them cardboard boxes and it would set birds in this hormonal spiral…. Same with fruit in the diet and the use of noodles to absorb excess liquid in the chop….

In the case of a bird who is this hormonal and who is probably grieving for all the lost babies, would spaying her or letting her breed be of any help at all? Looking forward to more! Thank you!

Breeder birds should go to sanctuaries and live wild and free, imagine if this bird went to the wrong person and they’d mess her up more.

I have a breeder male African grey who is 20 years of age, who was a breeder for 15 years and stuck at a sanctuary for almost 4 years before adopting him. And although he isn't cuddly, or allows us to touch him ( without screaming and growling and flopping around, never really bites) he really isn't aggressive at all and is the sweetest boy and I provide him such a good life. He never even knew how to play with toys until I showed him how, and now he gets a lot of toys, and a warm place to sleep and a lot of attention. When breeder birds do go to parrot rescues ( certified ones) such as the one i went through, there is a huge process involved to make sure the house is the right place for any bird. I went through in-home inspections, and two months of visitations twice a week to spend time with my Grey where i just sat with him and talked for hours. I even had to do post screenings with the parrot rescue to ensure he was being cared for.

I noticed she likes females better then males. I wonder if a male in the past made her feel unsafe or collected her eggs.Or if she just likes females better?

@@ambernakys1788 well I would say you found out about the better rescues...most rescues just want to adopt out as it takes too much time and energy along with resources to properly maintain a pet bird.

I don't even have a bird and I like watching their videos. I have no idea how complicated birds can be although they certainly seem to be worth it. It takes a special person to put forth the effort. I was in someone's house the other day and they had a cockatoo the was bobbing up and down and pulling its feathers out. The owners said it was ok but after watching these videos I know that that bird is in distress and it makes me sad now.

My BFA got this way when I became pregnant. Except her aggressiveness became so bad, she was attacking everyone in the house. She would leave her playstand and attack. It was so awful when we had to make the call to foster her out for a little while so I could have my child without problems. Unfortunately, she was attack the foster parent and ended up being surrendered back into the Avian society. I still have not gotten over the loss of my baby girl. I wish I could have had more help back then.

I have a very hormonal male blue and gold macaw that has a closed band on his foot I can’t read. We were told he was a breeder bird and is about 26 yrs old. That’s all we know about his past. He has very hormonal days no one can touch his cage or get close except me. He also plucks his feathers, he was plucked before we rescued him and tries to build nests. We are working on training him hoping to stop his bad habits. I hope your training goes well with Rio.

Why cant you simply grab the bird? When a chicken is stubborn I gently grab her, one handover each wing or one hand on top and the other hand either grabs the legs or I push her forward so she is forced to step on my arm. It depends on if it is a hen or a rooster and their mood. Sometimes I grab with one arm around the chicken and place the legs between my fingers and lift the chicken. Like a hug. The other hand I use to scratch the chicken. They mellow out immediately. Scratching their chest is the magic area. Is it the same for a Macaw? Sorry for all the questions, I want to learn. Will not get that kind of bird but my curiosity is hopelessly limitless. Your videos really triggers my curiosity. Educational videos I love them. Gets my mind off the lockdown.

I love the way birds smell too. Sometimes I just want to smoosh my nose in them and take deep breaths. People think I’m weird that way. But mmmm.

I liked that but I do do more than sniff. I Inhale their entire being. We should come up with a title for it before others. Sniffing is good but I just sniff. Hmmmm where to start
