my grandfather was a cabinet maker for well over 50 years (I have most of his tools). He always said buy the best tool you can afford. you'll end up spending less money in the long run, I Remember this as a boy of 7 being drilled into me.
One additional note - saw misalignment can simulate the affects of a dull blade. The CMT blades are a great value. I always buy blades in pairs, and extreme use blades in threes.... this allows me to keep my saw functional when sending blades off for maintenance, sometimes allowing me time to bundle blades to save on shipping

Great video. As a beginner it’s hard to know whether you’re wasting your money. It can also be hard to justify the expense of the more pricey brands, particularly when it comes to consumables. It’s good to have a reliable source explain that cheap blades are a false economy. I didn’t even know you could send blades to get sharpened when I first started woodworking, which just made the more expensive blades seem extortionate.

My wife bought me Audel's carpenters and builders guide collection. There was a very detailed chapter all about sawmills and their blades, tensioniong, gullets for moving sawdust etc. Way more fascinating a topic than I ever thought possible. Cool Stuff JKM
Oh kitty kat. You always make great videos. 1 fact I didn't hear in this video is the impact the blade makes on the motor. Cheap blade put more stress on the motor = motor burn out. Side note, I want to be you when I grow up.....

One thing that I was told by the shop owner where I take my blades for sharpening is that if you run your saw blades until they are totally dull, then they have to grind away more of the carbide to transform them. Net effect is fewer sharpening per blade. Blades that are removed from service sooner, at the first sign of getting dull, and sharpened, will last longer. He also said that blades that are cleaned regularly will run cooler and stay sharp longer.
Man - love these deep dive videos! I upgraded to a CMT blade about 6 months ago after coming across your table saw blade review, and its been a total game changer. Cuts are cleaner, smoother, and overall improving the quality of my work. Keep the solid content coming m'man!
Excellent video! I recently replaced my original SawStop blade with a premium blade and found a great local blade smith to sharpen the first one to keep as a backup. Awesome job, incredibly nice folks and a short drive.
Lmao!!! My wife is pissed off at me for mentioning my next tool purchase: a 270 dollar jigsaw. She thinks a harbor freight POS will do just fine! Now, in her defense, the one I want is a Makita cordless brushless one, but I hate cords, and I'm limited to one single outlet in my work space, so cordless is the best option. Also, I already own Makita stuff, so it is the logical choice to stay with that brand. P.S. I only own Makita because it was given to me from a previous job, so I just stuck with that brand. I have owned Ryobi, Milwaukee, Dewalt, and Makita over the years and they all have certain things I like and don't like, but perform similar in my experience.
@@charlieodom9107 when it came down to buying into a cordless system, i debated a long time. It was either makita, DeWalt or Bosch. I never really touched Ryobi since it was in the lower price bracket and didn't want to get burned again. I ended up going with the Bosch mainly because the drill i wanted to get had replaceable chucks. Its such a time saver when you have just the one drill.
@@renel2196 I only went with Makita because that is what I had. I didn't buy the original set, but I like it better than the Dewalt I have and it replaced a Milwaukee set I had before. The tools are a bit expensive when compared to brands like Rigid, and I don't think they are any better or worse, so if someone was buying a set, it would be hard to not recommend Rigid, especially with their warranty.
@@renel2196 I recently upgraded some Ryobi tools one+ tools to a nice set of Dewalt cordless tools. Damn the difference it makes, in my case (buying T-stack models in Belgium) made each tool on average 2-3 times as expensive as a ryobi equivalent. From my experience I'd say all the dewalt tools are just that slightly better and nicer to use, would I say 3 times as nice to use as ryobi? No but it's something I felt right of the bat. I ended up going with dewalt as I am working in a pro tool shop here and there were already some big Dewalt promotions going on and I got my employee discount on top. Ended up with about 3grand worth of tools and batteries having paid less than 2.
I discovered that a company maybe an hour away does carbide sharpening, AND they have a guy who makes a weekly run to my city! He'll come right to my door! No shipping. No BS. Anyway, thanks for this. I have only one CMT blade, along with couple "mid range" blades, and have way too many cheap ones. I've never done a cost comparison, and so now I know that I've been....less than clever? Shall we say? I'm going to go with the "buy once, cry once" more often now. Great video.
Thanks for the in-depth look at quality blades. I definitely agree w your philosophy in buy once cry once. I have always applied that to everything. And BTW, it’s a hand lens not a jewelers loop, ask any geologist!

He's got 10 different blades that I had no idea how much he used them or even how to know if they were worth sharpening. Thanks much for the great and informative video. I saw (yes, a pun) a guy who turned the blade around so it was turning the wrong way, then he took a sharpener and let the blade spin. In seconds he stopped it and turned the blade around and tried it, it cut the wood wonderfully.
I was having some issues with my hand circular saw. Come to find out it only had a few teeth on a the blade😳 I make a habit of checking my blades now. Thanks for this video. I have some new info to use in my checks. 👍

Thanks for this deep dive on blades. I don't consider my blades consumables because as you said they can be sharpened 8 or more times so for me many years of use. Consumable to me is a year, maybe 18 months. Being on the east coast I use RIDGE Carbide as my sharpening service and also use their blades along with Forrest blades.
There's a lot in a top quality saw blade. I once used a thin kerf blade in my worm drive skill saw once, never again. Even with a stabilizer installed, that blade wobbled severely. As for brands of blades, I've tried a Forrest blade, still prefer my Freud blades though. I always get a better cut with them, even over the Forrest blade. A very complete and informative video. I was surprised by the fly-away comment about Freud & Diablo. Maybe Freudtools can comment, but my understanding is that not all blades in the Freud catalogue are targeting the same user market and therefore not created equal. My guess the same goes for CMT with their four ranges of blades. Again would be interested to hear from CMT. themselves on this yopic
Hi JKM. Great video. I love your channel, own and use one of your stop blocks and try to support the vendors that support you. I have place two orders with Taylor tool works and their customer service has been terrible. When I call no one answers and when they finally return emails and say they’re going to send this to tech support no one ever gets back to me. I had this happen with the blade stabilizers you recommended that I purchased. I will not be using Taylor tool works for any further purchases. Just FYI for you for the vendors that you are endorsing.
Your blade videos are steller, I use them as a reference and to show others. One area I see a lot of mistakes is using a dial indicator to measure runout and squareness to the fence. I'll bet you could make an excellent video on this topic.
I bought a thin kerf 40T CMT orange shield blade to replace the thin kerf 24T construction blade that came with my Dewalt circular saw. Working with almost exclusively plate material aka plywood 24T wasn't good. The only downside I can mention about the CMT blade is that the orange color looks a bit weird in my Dewalt saw but I got used to quick enough :P
You missed one variable in your calculations 4 cost of ownership: the sawstop break action. People with a sawstop will most likely have triggered the break before a blade has been resharpened 10 to 15 times. So for sawstop owners, the math is different. But I concur with buy once`s.. so I liked your message and the cost breakdown.

Great vid but one observation: you can’t really generalise about Freud. They have a vast range from entry level Diablo through to premium grade l. A decent freud blade like a 60T tcc with a good amount of carbide and their permashield coating can be well over £100 here. A decent CMT can be £180 but there are cheaper options and you don’t have to spend more than £100 for a good blade that should take 4 or 5 sharpenings. Cheap blades are false economy. Not enough carbide on them and they just don’t last as long.
It would be really interesting to see how the harvey destroyer blades compare to Forrest and CMT. I've been seeing a lot of them in shops lately, but no good comparisons or real reviews.
Generally, I find the easiest way to tell when the blade is Dull is when the conversation no longer flows and the blade brings up topics that it's already discussed.
Thank you. I inherited a lot of blades. I don’t know whether to keep or dump. Some are a little rusty and some have some kind of rubber on the edges. Is that what they do to protect them after sharpening? I inherited so many tools. Now. To figure out how to use them.
Great video. I do think that one other factor to take into account is just how much you use your tablesaw / how many projects you actually make. While I did pick up a couple of those CMT blades, I also have Freud / Diablo ones, and those still work fine for me. Mainly because I only get out to the shop every other weekend, if I am lucky. Full time job and too many other hobbies. :)
@@katzmosestools - Oh, I won't disagree there. Thus why I bought a couple CMT blades using your discount. :) But, if you didn't have that discount...might be an even wash. I really do like the CMT blades I got.
Hi, I don't know if you have in USA but there is a multinational company in Europe named Frezite that sells industrial diamond tip saws do end user, the same saw that industry uses 24*7 in industrial furniture making, man, cost 10x more but last 30x more than conventional carbide, absurdly silent I can cut with no ear protection. It's just like the Ferrari of saws, after that I throw away all my old Freud where it's belong: garbage bin. It's something out of this world.

Needed a 9/16th piece of wood to sandwich between two island cabinets and was ripping a 3/4” piece of pine that I ripped down to about 3 inches wide. The piece was smoking when I tried to rip it down to 9/16ths so I had to lower the blade and do half at a time. What was happening there? Blade seems good.
