Marriage is not about happiness. It's about holiness. Happiness is a by-product of that. Do you have children? Divorce robs them of their future. Please don't give up on your marriage!

@@Joyce-hn2ydrubbish. You can only put up with a dysfunctional and unhappy relationship for so long. If you can't work it out together, or if one party doesn't want to try, end it. Life is short. You do your best, but you're not supposed to live an unhappy life. I'm a retired Psych Nurse. I've seen the damage that can happen from people trying to live a lie, just for the sake of the children. You're giving them the wrong example for their lives.

Me too.... I'm a very slow learner. Or maybe I learned this (like, within weeks of the wedding) and the lesson just didn't stick. And so I kept regrouping, pulling myself together, praying to my God for rebirth, and relying on that old tripe, "If at first you don't succeed, try and try again" ......for like 25 years! And the same result, time after time after time. Now she wants a bigger house. Hell will freeze over first.

Nope. Women are not happy. Why? Since the fall of Adam and Eve and the results from this were: Women WANT TO DOMINATE MEN. Women are not happy whether they are dominate or not. Men? We work by the sweat of our brow. Yes some men never grow up and take that leadership responsibility, but most do indeed work.

At least the female versions are typically not.

Serious question: What does she do to show she cares? If can actually list a few things, then maybe buy her flowers. That being said, I'm betting the list is non existent like it is for so many other men's situations. You should ask her how she shows she cares.

I’m not sure if your comment was meant to be sarcastic, but it’s clear that this behaviour is selfish and inconsiderate. Your wife is absolutely not being selfish by wanting you to show you care in small ways. Small acts of kindness are essential in any marriage and should not require begging. It sounds like she contributes significantly around the house, which deserves your respect. Regardless of your view that "people can't make each other happy," each spouse has a duty to create a supportive, happy environment for their partner. Love is an action, and you should actively choose to be loving toward your spouse. If she’s contributing half of the finances, it’s shared money, not just yours. Every married person should have the mindset, “What’s mine is yours.” If cost is a concern, picking wildflowers and wrapping them with a bow is an affordable and kind gesture. It’s the thought that counts, and many husbands on tight budgets manage to do thoughtful things for their wives. It’s baffling that you refuse to do something sweet for her. If you loved her, wouldn’t you want to? You should find more reasons to be kind, not excuses not to be. I don’t know the details of your marriage, but with this much selfishness, how do you expect to maintain a happy relationship? How would you feel if she showed you the same inconsideration? Can you try to relate to her feelings and imagine how it would affect you if she refused small acts of kindness because you "only contribute to half the bills?" It’s alarming that you refuse to show her love and respect while diminishing her hard work. “She barely contributes to half”-you make it seem like that’s easy, but supporting a family, whether financially or domestically, is commendable. Conversely, is it shameful for you to “just contribute to half”? Does that make you ineligible for emotional support and responsible for your own happiness, which would justify her making excuses not to show consideration for you, as you are doing for her now? Relationships aren’t one-sided; you can't expect her to show kindness if you refuse to do the same for her. I hope I’ve helped you see things differently. Perhaps surprise her with a bouquet of flowers, breakfast in bed, or a well-planned picnic. To reiterate, your wife’s contribution to half of the household and caring for the children more than warrants basic emotional fulfillment from you. Her desire for kindness isn’t selfish; your refusal to be kind is. Both spouses should be considerate and kind to each other. Because I don’t know all the details of your marriage, I will add that If you feel she’s lacking in this area, remember that you need to do your part too, and it can't begin without you setting the precedent. Yup. But you know what? She'll still be unhappy, because she won't take responsibility for her life. And you can finally move on and be with people who will.

I really like the way Karyn turns this around. When men are looking for a wife, they need to find a happy one or their lives will be made a living hell. We need to find happy wives, not make them. Sadly, most of us will remain unmarried if we collectively do this.

That mantra was created by some old timers back before feminism ruined women. “I don’t need no man” (but I need you to pay the bills, buy me things, open my doors, remodel the house, do the cooking, do the dishes, clean the house, take the kids to sports practice, etc…)
