Hey just wanted to throw in a comment about the end of this episode when you discuss markers of success whether it’s awards or teaching etc. All I can say is Mr Jake Parker, you have had such a huge impact on so many people’s lives by opening up and sharing your artistic practice and sharing the talents you’ve been given to guide others. I’m truly grateful. The SVS learn team have changed my life and made me believe I can achieve my dreams of being an illustrator. The very first time I heard of SVS was through inktober many years ago. I used the inktober challenge to raise money for charity in memory of my cousin and raised over £1000 for the brain tumour trust. I’ve always been a listener of the Pod Cast since those early days. Jim Henson wisely said he wanted to leave the world a better place than when he got here. Your work and efforts Jake have truly done that, and that is this biggest award of all. I speak for the many when I say your advice, wisdom and coaching has been life changing. It’s fair to say you make an impact on the world with your art 😊😊😊😊

I have to say that the stories and vulnerability is so refreshing, as most of us have secret thoughts that haunt us. But to keep going, believing in your unique way of art, is in the end a healthy way to be a positive force for yourself and the world.

Can confirm, the course was worth the cost! In 2 weeks I wrote and illustrated a comic book, and now I'm hooked. The discord has been entirely positive and the feedback from other comic makers has been incredibly helpful. 10/10 would recommend!

Jake, many years ago, back in '98, I was studying and working at a higher education institute in Iquique, Chile. I worked in the computer lab, and for the first time in my life, I had the opportunity to connect to the Internet. I spent all my free time searching for artists and illustrators, marveling at their work. The ones I liked the most, I printed (using the institute's color printer 😅) so I could take them home and keep admiring them. One of those illustrations was yours. Years later, more than 20, I decided to return to the path of art, especially illustration, and I enrolled in SVS to learn how to become a children's illustrator, not knowing that you were one of its founders. Your work and your life have greatly influenced my work and my life.

Yes we listen to every episode! Ive literally listened to every episode 3 times so far, except the interviews only once or twice on those.... We appreciate you Jake!

Jake, of course everyone listens to EVERY episode! :D Some do that even twice, because the episodes are far too short to survive a whole week. I do miss Lee and Will as well, but I also LOVE episodes with Samantha and Anthony! :D Would be cool to have it mixed up even more, f.e. having Samantha doing an episode with Will and Lee etc. Or doing a 5 point perspective and make that episode 2 hours long. ;)

Comparison can be good. However, I tend to see art as a horizontal hierarchy rather than a vertical hierarchy. Meaning, when I see artists that are "better" than me, I always ask myself if I wish I could replace my work with theirs, and the answer is always no, because it isn't me.

In response to the first question: Although i agree with the mental health comments i think we should also discuss the mindset factor, the "toxic work environment" is only toxic if you let it be toxic to you, yeah some things might suck but she has a great job that other artists would do anything to be in that position.... i understand everyone has their limits and there is only so much you can take but a little gratitude goes a long way
