this is How i remove painted screws from a door hinge, these are old slotted screws covered in paint. I needed to remove the screws from the door hinges so i could remove the door from the frame to cut it down and fit the new carpet.
painted screws in door hinges is a pain, but removing them doesn't have to be a nightmare. this is an easy way to remove screws full of paint, before I try to back out painted screws I use this method to remove the paint from the head of the screw so I have the best chance to back the screw out 1st time. failing to get them out can cause a load of damage if the screw head becomes ruined from trying to unscrew them, than you can no longer actually fully remove the screws. once in this position it can be very hard to remove the screw from the door hinges and normally results in damaging the door frame to get them out. ( sometimes you can drill the screws heads off to remove the hinge however you then have the threads left in the door frame and that can cause problems too.
the process to remove the painted screws I use requires no power tools and limited hand tools but I follow a series of steps to give myself the best chances of removing them, and you can see it works even in this case where the door hinge are smothered in gloss, to the point its hard to see the screw slots from them being filled with so much paint. However sometimes the screw can become to damaged to unscrew and requires more work to remove.

If the screws are square Robertson, common in Canada, use a 7/16” drillbit to drill out the paint of a #2 screw. Then use the Robertson screwdriver to slowly remove the screw. Other sized Robertson screws will use other sized bits.

I sometimes give the screwdriver a few taps with a hammer so the shock can help free it a little

Thanks for your advice. I am renting an apartment in a building that is at least as old as the 1940s; and as expected, there is like a bajillion layers of paint on every paintable (and even not) surface.

Hello rushdiy so your vid caught my attention because the cupboard doors have been up since I moved in and that was 11 yrs ago so god knows how long they been painted over 😂. Managed to remove one screw but that’s because it had some grip . The others had many layers of paint . So is the best option to do as you said or to try some sought of paint remover ? Regards Mark

What if the screw head is stripped? One of my hinges has a Phillips head that won't hold a screw driver.

i have managed to hammer a old screwdriver into the head before but if its to far gone and really tight then i have drilled the head off but then you have a thread in the way of the hinge fixing hole if you refit the same hinges or iv levered the screw out and plug the damaged hole it leaves, but this can damage the hinge and frame. its a pain to be honest

One can get, from a DIY store, a removal kit (not expensive). Basically consists of a left-handed drill bit. One drills into the screw and, because the drill is going anti-clockwise, the cutting force, of the drill bit, causes the screw to back out.
