Here’s how I reduced the number of stripped screws when removing cabinet hinges that have been painted over with multiple layers of paint. These screws were filled with paint.
These overlay cabinet hinges probably have two or three layers of paint on them.

Told my wife I wanted to take these cabinet doors off but there was a million coats of pavement so I didn’t wanna deal with it and she sends me this video and it opens with “so many many layers of paint” ha perfect.

I really hate it when people sloppily paint hinges - especially if it's with the same thick paint used for the doors. The hinges get gunked up, and it just creates so many problems because of not wanting to spend 10 more minutes dismantling a few screws before painting. If you want to clean things up and do it properly you can restore old painted metal hinges by letting them simmer in water for a good 20-30 minutes. It also helps a lot if you make the water basic. The easiest way is usually to add some baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), or even better washing soda (sodium carbonate) as it is a stronger base. Most typical indoor paints paint should basically rub off with minimal effort. Highly recommend you use this opportunity to also lubricate the hinges.

Thanks for your video . Working on the same project . Just went and bought OEM tools, impact bolt extractor and driver quarter inch hex receiver worked like a dream . Part number 26081 . Bought it at AutoZone.

Hit those screws lightly with a heat gun…they’ll soften right up.

What's really fun is when the screws are slotted and have been in place since 1949 with four to five layers of oil based paint over them. That's what I'm dealing with now. Twelve doors down, twelve to go. Yikes!

Surprised you could even tell they were screws. 🤣 Good luck!

This is what I’m dealing with. A home that’s been rented since the 50s. Minimum 6 layers of paint.

jeezus...that looks almost exactly like my kitchen cabinets...I think there since 1950...where can we get that hinge..seen them anywhere...I had one break. I like the "tap" idea..looks like it works good...I just used some acetone and then WD-40...but the tapping looks better.

If they are minorly damaged heads, use the skin of a balloon between the bit and the thread to increase friction. If painted, try to dig out as much paint as possible first (thin screwdriver ect.). If you just can't get a grip then stop and try something else before you just make things worse by stripping it completely. If they are heavily damaged, ask for a special bit at the hardware designed to remove damaged screw heads. These are quite aggressive and dig into any remaining metal to get purchase (pushing on it heavily is a good idea). If the screw heads are beyond help or straight out missing then you have little choice but to drill them out. This is is very tedious and will certainly create damage in the surrounding wood you need to patch and paint. Raw force and a crowbar to pry things apart obviously works, but at that point you can't expect things not to break to be reused or restored. Try your best to never let to this stage :)

@TheStigma tx for the tips! I actually discovered that after I cleaned out the screw heads as much as possible, then used a stubby, pushed down hard, and turned slowly until it moved, I could get them out. I keep forgetting that with some projects, I have to remember my little hands... and muscles 😄
