This is how I start a commissioned painting. Always with the photo reference first. If the art commissioner give me a decent photo ( with good lighting and clear to see), my work will be way easier. Most of the time, I need to do a lot of digital paint over to make sure I have a good reference photo for my watercolor painting. This can take a while but it is definitely worthy. It make my painting process easier and it can help my client envision how is their final painting may look like.
