Hey Paul - I just wanted to take minute to say thank you. It had been 20 years since I attempted to put together a PC, but after finding your page and watching several videos I decided to give it another shot. I followed your videos first in purchasing all of the hardware, assembling the system and then installing the OS and optimizing the software. By far the fastest, and most economical PC I have ever owned. To top it all off, there is something really rewarding in being able to do something slightly outside your comfort zone as well. In the end, everyone should take comfort in knowing Paul's process and instructions work. If I can do it, anyone can. The videos are excellent. Very much appreciate the time and effort and production you apply to your channel.

For the Linux question: The fast and easy answer is: any distro that's released a version in the last 3 years will almost assuredly support Ryzen. Ubuntu, since it was mentioned, even as far back as 16.04 (the oldest version I see in any meaningful frequency these days) will support it. The longer answer is sometime around kernel version 4.10 is when there's decent enough support for most functions/features you'd want. After that, there have been some extra things like patches for temperature monitoring, some optimizations/security fixes, etc. Zen 2 support came later, but really most popular distros should have no issue at this point. For example, I've run debian, Ubuntu, and arch on zen 2 without issues at all.

I've been building my own systems for a long time now, and I can honestly say that I've just learned something watching this video. I recently bought a new setup as my old computer tanked completely. Old computer was DDR3, so this was my first experience delving into DDR4 from a build standpoint. For the new build, I bought a kit of 2x8GB G.SKILL Ripjaws V 3600 CL16-19-19-39. Went back a couple weeks later for a new video card and decided to double the RAM since that same kit was still available and on sale. Now, I'm running into timing issues with the RAM. I can get the system stable at 3200 with appropriate timings. 3600 forces the CMOS to revert, and anything between causes stability issues. I should note that this isn't running it through the XMP profiles available, as they don't work. There's other preloaded memory configurations available that I use instead. I've checked the compatibility list for my motherboard as well (MSI X570-A Pro), and noted that the specific kit SKU isn't on the list, though it is very close to other compatible kit SKUs for G.SKILL. I was writing it off as a compatibility issue between the motherboard and the RAM, but after watching this, I'm wondering if it's because of using two dual kits, even though they are the exact same SKU. I hadn't done the XMP prior to adding the additional RAM, so I might test that out when I get home later to see if two sticks will run stable at their rated clock and timing.

Paul, Paul.. The Steam from PC-to-PC is called "In Home Streaming" The Steam to a Steamlink or to a device using the Steamlink APP is Steamlink. Steamlink is (im not sure how people dont understand this) also a fully featured Remote client. Just click the corner "Exit Big Picture Mode" and BOOM, you're staring at your desktop. You can play ANY games via Steamlink that way. You exit Big Picture, and then just use your mouse and keyboard (plugged into your Steamlink (device or the device running the App) and open up your other game. Works fine. You can even use it to do real work, watch movies, whatever. Its a full up remote desktop experience. The best way to do it, IMO, is an nVidia Shield TV, since itll actually support 4k. The Steamlink Hardware (discontinued) doesn't (only 1080p). The app on Android or iOS (or Raspbian, you can use a Raspberry Pi to make a Steamlink this way) has to support 4k/60 if you want it to work, which the shield does. iOS and Android devices that aren't Android TV (of which the Shield TV is by FAR the best) would have to have some way to output to your TV, of course, and generally only work over wireless.. and the AndroidTV/ShieldTV has Ethernet, which is a lot more stable. And if your PC hardware wont hack 4k... the ShieldTVs AI upscaling is actually quite good and can be applied to games. The ShieldTV also lets you stream your PC (full remote capability) with the nVidia In Home Streaming option if you have an nVidia GPU.

I couldnt find a straight and direct answer anywhere else ( building first PC) learning as I build upon so far on: Asus P8Z68 Gen3 - i7 2600K - AIO CoolerMaster - EVGA GTX 960 4GB - & now I know 100% when next buying RAM Corsair 4x8GB Package instead of 2x8GB now/2x8GB later because I rather not do that whole BIOS adjustment thing you mentioned. Safe to say buying 4-Pack guarantees a SMOOTH operation out the box & not stressing if adding more same RAM after is infact doing same/worse then just buying all at once

Nice job Paul, especially on the RAM upgrade options. A lot of people skip over the XMP / timings issue when adding an identical matched 2-DIMM kit to a system that already has the exact same 2-DIMM kit and I find that the only people that tend to be aware of that issue are people that have actually run into it first-hand. You didn't go into the advantages / disadvantages of 2 vs 4 ranks (single and dual-ranked DIMMs) and 1T vs 2T command rates, which if done correctly can offer upwards of a 25% performance increase in certain workloads that are often memory bottlenecked. For example: using 4 x DDR4-3733 @ C16 T2 over Ryzen optimized 2 x 8GB DDR4-3200 @ C16 T1 can offer up-to 25% faster compression/decompression rates and up-to 10% higher frame rates in certain titles, although it can actually hurt performance in some scenarios as well. I admit that while that config requires a mild overclock and knowledge that your hardware can do it, it's beyond what 99% of people are going to want to do, or need for that matter.

For streaming PC to remote TV: Depends what 'smart' features the TV has. Can use a wireless-display feature (different terms depending on brand) to clone/extend PC's desktop & games etc for no extra money at all, just make sure TV is connected to same network as PC (Ethernet or WiFi, either should work). If you want to control the PC from the TV-room, there are apps for that. Streaming media to a Smart TV can usually be done by the TV's media sharing app, again for free. Another option is a thunderbolt cable run between the rooms and a hub on the TV-room end for connecting peripherals, can even connect the TV to that for a single-cable solution. (LTT's Linus does this in his house so they don't hear their PC cooling noises etc while they work). IDK how much that solution costs, but a single cable for screen and peripherals is likely easier than a cable for each. Price will depend on the length of the cable-run, naturally. I have a 30-metre HDMI cable I used to use for connecting a projector over a drop-ceiling; it was cheap and worked fantastic for my use-case. I could even set an Android phone/tablet as a WiFi touch-pad/keyboard to control the PC source. Great for streaming movies, though I never tried to 'game' with such a setup! Hope my rambling is helpful to someone :)

Hey Paul! Happy 50th probing! I’ve recently built a PC about a month ago that I plan on taking to college where I’ll be living on campus in dorms. What’s the best way to get a fast internet connection in the inconvenience that there isn’t an ethernet port in the room? Are pcie wireless cards (with the antennas?) better than a usb solution? How much is too much to spend on a wireless solution? That concludes my probing of Paul.

I think you should be probed twice a month for sure. I would suggest doing it for a couple months and seeing if it does well and figuring out after that if you want to continue. Keep up the good work. A question for your next Probing Paul: why don't you use angled power adapters in your builds to reduce cable strain and aid build cleanliness? Particularly 180 degree power adapters for GPUs and 90 degree adapters for motherboards..

There can be a lot of static between the headphone wire to the gold convertor jack to the socket, as whenever the gold socket moves it moves slightly/ would avoid that . I would buy a long cable with weaved sleeving and do the thing we do in events which you tie a twist loop knot and connect the two connect buy leads. It stops the cables pulling apart.

The Corsair LPX series lists speed and latencies for each model. It was a breeze to order a 2x16 that matched my 2x8. Tripling your RAM feels awesome for not to much money. This just reminded me I did it before when I went from 4MB to 12MB... And now I feel old...

Who doesn't like a good probing, the more the better. I say make them as often as you want.

Steam Link on Android TV works pretty well if you are using Ethernet for the TV connection. You can also access the desktop too with a few tricks.

Hey Paul... I just wanted to tell you how helpful this series has been for a new PC builder like myself. Probing you has been a real pleasure. Here's my question: with the next gen console systems right around the corner, what do you think the system requirements are going to be like for the next gen games? I see some people saying that I'm going to need a Ryzen 7 and an RTX 2080 ti and since I just built my system (Ryzen 5 3600 and a 2070 super) that's a little disappointing. On a side note, I'm glad that I wasn't the only one that benefited from the front panel audio question from the last episode. I didn't throw out my old headset though. I upgraded to a wireless headset and I'm going to use that for work meetings and gaming and then use my other wired and better sounding headset with the adapter you mentioned when I track guitar or need a mixing reference.

Some good advice, just subscribed! I knew that the RAM info was the same when I last built my computer years ago and wanted to make sure nothing had changed. (I was kinda hoping I could just slap any old DIMMS in there haha 😉) Oh man, in regards to front headphone jacks, I used to have a nice Soundblaster PCI card that had a fully integrated panel on the front with all sorts of fancy goodness. I also remember getting my FIRST soundcard so I wouldn't have to use the computer speaker for the very limited available games at the time lol. The speaker that just yells at you if you BSOD sometimes or start-up. Kids today have it so good! 🤓

For the gaming in another room question: Linus has a pretty badass solution using thunderbolt 3, and Parsec is a really badass remote play program that is free. For the long Linux question: Linux loves Ryzen! I've used Ubuntu, Pop!, Manjaro, Arch, and all work great with my Ryzen processors (2600, 3600, 3700X)

Really good video dude! Like some seriously good info here that most people don't know about. Especially on the ram. That's a deep topic that most don't fully understand. (ram overclocking breaks my brain sometimes). The trace layout of the board you use matters, and the amount of ram on the stick matters IN RELATION to the trace layout e.g. dual rank sticks work better as a pair on a daisy chain layout vs 4 sticks on a t-topology board.

I am probably the only person from Gen-Z who understands the reference of your 'intro' that being: Bill and Ted's Excellent adventure, which, in and of itself, is quite an excellent adventure lol.

Great advice and excellent! I had 2 x 16gb 3000Mhz Corsair DIMMS and purchased 2 x 32 GB 3600 Mhz Corsair DIMMS... It didn't go well on my ASROCK X570 Taichi ATX motherboard. No sir mixing these RAMs did all sort of weird things.. - Boot Loop... - Setting the Ram speed to 3000 Mhz in the BIOS would cause the system to boot , but on next reboot it will go into 2 boot loop and then in BIOS it would get set to 2400 Mhz. I removed the 2 x 16gb and everything is fine now.

HAD 2x4gb Corsair Low Porfile 3000C15 ram. Micron E die on a X370 board. Had it overclocked to 3200 C14-18-14-16-32 48 1t Bought a 2x8gb Crucial ballistx 3000C15 Micron A die. (identical timings, slightly better subtimings) Figure I would sell the older memory but decided I try to run both of them together. They worked. Overclocked them to the old subtimins I had. Surprisingly also worked flawlesslty with perceived improved timing. Decided to keep it. Glad I did, FS2020 needs more than 16gb at high+ These cheap Crucial Ballistx often go above 3466 C16 speed on modern x570 boards, but unfortunately, anything above 3266 on my x370 won't boot. Tough the thight timings I have gives better numbers than a stock loose 3600 c16 kit. You often have margin for tightening RAM. If you have compatibility problems with 4 dims, often you only need to deal with initial memory training with XMP off to stabilize the 4 dimms, increase the voltage, disable geardown and gradually increase frequency. You eventually will be able to even overclock the ram above its stock speed.

Not sure if anyone will see this but I will post it anyways, recently I was shown that windows has mouse acceleration on by default if you go into mouse settings, then click on additional mouse options on the right side, under the 3nd tab the first checkbox "enhance pointer precision" should be unchecked. If it's checked you have mouse acceleration. This was pointed out to me and actually made a big difference gaming.

I also learned from Episode #49 about not using the front panel audio jack. I had wondered why it sounded so flat and tinny. It would make sense though that an onboard DAC is routed to the back IO panel. Not so much a question, just wanted to say thanks. also a fairly new sub, and enjoying the videos quite a bit! All the info has been super helpful. Looking forward to picking up a proper beer glass set from your shop.

The steam link does NOT only let you play steam games. It basically just streams the whole pc. You can even minimize steam and just use the desktop.

Solved the multi room pc issue with a couple firesticks, a nvidia gpu, a good wifi router, and a program called moonlight. I can stream my pc to any android device or tv in my house and the whole setup only cost me the price of the firesticks (which were freebie hand-me-downs). Wireless peripherals are obviously a must. PS4 controllers worked the best for me and went through multiple floors and walls in my home.

For BC Field Technician: Ubuntu 20.04 runs great on my ryzen machine. Ryzen5 2600, XFX RX580 8GB vid card, 16gb RAM, 500GB NVMe, B450M-DS3H mobo. I have used ubuntu 16, 18 and now 20 on that machine daily for 2 years and have not had one problem. Basically if its AMD it will run fine on linux. AMD stuff is built into the kernel so all the stuff just works automagically. Some nvidia cards have problems on some distros. There are nvidia drivers for linux though.

Hi Paul, I've enjoyed your videos over the past year while planning my first gaming PC, which I built in April (white Fractal S2, Asus TUF Gaming X570-Plus WiFi, Ryzen 5 3600, Aorus Radeon RX5700XT, Noctua D15 air cooler, 16Gb Vengeance DDR4 3200). It does everything I need, gaming is great and I can stream and record Xbox and PS4 gameplay on the PC using an Elgato HD60 S+ capture card. However, video quality is below par when I record or stream games on the PC itself and I'm considering upgrading my 'old' desktop PC as a streaming PC. It's a Lenovo H50-50 (Intel i5 4460 4-core, DDR3 slots, and what seems like a bespoke Lenovo motherboard). Research suggests this is still a capable desktop PC, but I'm unsure what features a budget streaming PC would look like. It would be good if you could suggest some essential features a streaming PC would need for 1080/720 streaming on Twitch, taking the USB input from my gaming PC via the Elgato.

Important for a Ram upgrade is also on which platform you are. I got a 2000series Ryzen CPU and i added also 2 stick to my existing 2 Sticks, so that I have a total of 4; they are all rated for 3200mhz speed, they are all the same type/Kit of ram, same manufacturer, same frequency, same CL, same capacity. However, I ran into stability issues when I try to run them with their DOCP Settings(or XMP as most know it(but that just on Intel, while DOCP is on AMD). My System kept crashing all the time. I remember hearing back in the days, that the ram controller on Zen+ can't handle 4 stick with such speed, I lowered the speed to 2999mhz and never faced any problems. This might seem an easy fix, but I am sure a lot of people would have thought the ram would be dead on arrival, and would not have been able to fix the problem.

For the different rooms problem: I recommend a cheap ChromeOS/Linux laptop. I wiped an $89 ASUS Chromebook, gave it Ubuntu, and run SteamLink. ChromeOS has issues with cursors and ends up giving two cursors (the reason I wiped ChromeOS off and put Ubuntu), but works perfectly fine with controller games. Also, if it's a looks thing (I know people who don't want a PC by their TV), MSI makes a console looking PC.

To add some insight on the HDBaseT balun set, most will be able to do a distance of 100' extended reach will get to 100m (330') the latency is only 1-2 frames

Hi Paul, great content! I am in need of your well-probed (and hopefully probative) wisdom. I find my 17(?) year old Logitech Z-680s are just about reaching their end of life and will need to be replaced. To be honest they have been limping along for a few years now. Obviously, if something works (6 apartments and 2 houses later) I will use it until it dies. Sadly, I looked beyond the obvious Logitech Z906 replacement into the confusing world of motherboard DACs, external DACs, amplifiers, A/V receivers, ahhhhhhh! You were the first person I thought of to hopefully help me understand this chaos. I am looking for a way to use common speakers (e.g. bookshelf speakers, studio monitors) while keeping the flexibility to use a headset every now and then. Oh, if it helps, I am a professor, so remote learning compatibility (e.g. Zoom, Teams) is a must. Please help! Also, please stay safe (you and the family)! Thanks! XL

There are zero issue running any modern Linux distro on Ryzen. I currently have Unraid, Debian SID and Arch all running on Ryzen machines. Graphics drivers will be the bigger issue and the answer varies depending on if its AMD or Nvidia but both are fairly easy to get working.

You can actually use SteamLink (or Steam in home streaming) with many non-Steam games (or other software) simply by adding them to the Steam library on the host system - Add a game -> Add a Non-Steam Game.

Raspi ftw. If you want to keep it on 24/7, power consumption alone would make it cost-effective over any old PC in about a year.

I run Ubuntu 20.04 LTS on my Ryzen 3 2200G with and Asrock HDV rel 4.0 motherboard. It worked out of the box, no need to look for drivers. For NVIDIA drivers see my last sentence. I even run Ubuntu Studio 20.04 and an activated Windows 10 Pro in a Virtualbox Virtual Machine (VM) on the same system. Try out other discos using Virtualbox, it is easy and fast. You don't loose much performance (

19:30 The first piece of advice I'd like to offer is to never say that you can't find info on working with Linux, unless getting eaten alive by a nerd-horde is your thing. Second is to get ready to use the terminal often for things you are used to getting done with the click of the mouse on Windows, don't expect the terminal and Linux window (or X-Window) to do exactly the same thing. Much Linux support you'll find assume you know the underlying idea, pipes, regular expressions, and so on. Depending on how involved you want to be and how you prefer to learn things, you may want to try everything and see what gets broken and what works, or you probably prefer to know exactly what is it that it does before trying anything. In any case it is better to try a live installation (one that doesn't permanently modify your data) before committing to any particular distro. There can be some serious differences between them so it is better to try the ones based on the same distribution, i.e. Mint if you're trying Ubuntu, before advancing any further with the other "fun" versions you want to try. RU-vid channels that can help you depend on which one you're using, for Linux in general there's LearnLinuxTV, LinuxTex, and so on, I'd given on Linux for gaming so I can't give any advice on that, and when you get frustrated you can listen to Bryan Lunduke's rants to let off some steam.

Hi Paul. I love these videos because they answer so many questions I didn't know I had. But I have a question I haven't seen come up before: I used to be very big into PC hardware from probably 2006-2010 or so, but college eventually took enough of my attention that I fell out of it and didn't pick back up after. I only came back to the hobby recently. A lot has changed, like AMD becoming top-dog for CPU's, and I don't think Founder's Edition GPU's were even a thing when I fell away from the scene. Now I am planning a build for my partner, and we've been waiting for the 3000-series GPU's to come out, or see what AMD's answer to that will be. But I never really learned how to discern the best GPU for price--I always just blindly bought superclocked EVGA cards, as they were a very well-regarded brand at the time I was really into hardware. Now that Founder's Editions are a thing, and I'm paying much closer attention, I've realized I don't really know the difference between FE cards and third-party ones, and what the difference between different third-party cards is. Could you give a quick what's-what on how to navigate the GPU market?

Hey Paul, love your videos keep it up. Im thinkint of upgrading to ryzen from intel and just wanted to know what i need to do. Like what should i unistall/install, would i need to re buy windows? Do i/how do i uninstall the old mobo drivers? Just changing the mobo and cpu and keeping old gpu and drivers. THANKS IN ADVANCE AND KEEP UP THE QUALITY CONTENT!!!

When I upgraded my monitor I briefly lost my mind trying to get the colors to look "correct" to me. I had gone from a bog-standard panel to a 144 ips and also from HDMI to DP. When I was playing overwatch I would constantly be clicking around trying to get the "vibrant" colors I was familiar with across the board. Turns out I was just used to looking at improperly calibrated images. Spent way too long realizing my new panel just tends to slightly yellow so bumped up the blue in nvidia and then even longer calibrating it by eye.

The Steam Link hardware was not limited to games. It was full access to the PC. Steam Link also has Bluetooth for my keyboard and mouse. Whatever I want to do at my computer in my bedroom, I can do from the living room. My desktop has 2 monitors, and on the single screen in the living room, it showed whichever the mouse moved to, instantly. I thought that was clever. Guess not? When they went on sale, I purchased an extra, just in case.

Hey Paul, First off, thanks for the PC build tutorials. I knew nothing about PC parts prior to last summer and your content helped me greatly during my first build in the Phanteks Evolv X case. That said, the question I have is do you know of any HDMI 2.0 switcher that supports 1440p and all the other goodies (e.g. Freesync, 120fps, HDR, etc) that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? Plenty that I've found will do 1080p, or 4k, but often nothing in-between. Ones that do (usually a matrix) are way too expensive, I can't justify spending upwards to $300 for one of those. My Aorus FI27Q-P gaming monitor is dedicated to my consoles and I'd like to hook them all up to it without having to plug/unplug cables constantly. Also...what beer should I purchase next?

Hi Paul. Big fan of your content! I'm looking to build a new AMD system. I've not decided between B550 or X570. My two main requirements are to use Blender for 3D modeling (creating shapes, but not much rendering) and VirtualBox. 1) Is it worth it to wait till the end of the year for 4000 series? 2) Do you have suggestions for possible components for a "modest" (sub $700) build? With Steam Link you can run desktop mode and basically stream any content/game etc from host to client. (It works on Linux)
