I knew I'd run into problems with 4 sticks of RAM but bought them anyway. Glad I could find a description on what the issue is. Thanks!

It's a year after you uploaded this video now. I have a simular situation. I have an Asrock Steel Legend B450M with the newest BIOS. First after my build 6 months ago I installed 2x8 GB sticks from Corsair 3000 Mhz and everything worked fine. I have also overclocked it to 3333 Mhz and tuned the settings and everything worked also fine. I have now upgraded with the same Corsair adding 2x extra 2x8 GB 3000 MHZ. First I have load BIOS default and then put XMP which worked perfectly fine. Then I overclocked it to 3333 and it also worked fine for me. Then I tried to tune the timings and I could not reach the same as with original. I was experimenting and have managed to set so much as possible timing which worked stable. I could not set every timing setting as the original but 80%. Everything is working fine and fast. Read and write spead have increased 10%. Asrock B450M Steel Legend is also LOW-to-MIDRANGE motherboard. So, this is my experience. Type Corsair RAM is: Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 ... I'm wondering how is the situation now? Cheers. (Sorry for my bad English :)

everything is the same for Ryzen 2000 CPU's BIOS updates didn't really change anything. The memory controller on Ryzen 3000 CPU's really improved memory support, even on older motherboards.

I’m literally having the same issue I’ve bought 2 identical, 8gb DDR4 3200mhz Corsair RAM sticks, to go from 16GB to 32GB. And my b450 plus motherboard, just doesn’t want to know. It tells me that there is hardware failure or whatever when I do a memory check. Thing is.. I’ve sent it back and replaced the RAM already... so it’s not the sticks. And I’m banging my head against the wall not being able to find anyone online who understands what the feck I’m trying to describe “Ooooh did you click it in, ooooh well you must’ve damaged it” Like NO, fuck... I’m more than capable of clicking in bloody ram, Jesus Christ... So yeah, it’s lovely to see it’s not me, and it’s actually a known issue Thanks for the vid bud

Good to download CPU-Z and check the timings that the XMP settings actually launch into. Have found with many boards, even though running at the xmp profile speed in MHz the Xmp timing profile, if individual timings are set at "auto" good chance they are not running per the XMP profile. Even possible to increase latency even though you have increased MHz if timings are too loose. Something to keep an eye out for. Need on many occasions to adjust settings like CAS manually in bios to ensure you are getting benefit of higher MHz.

@@HardwareForGamers I know i might sound like a noob but whatever. i built my new pc: i got an 8700k on a z390 board (this one is pretty high end board) and i bought 32gb ram 4x8gb (corsair vengeance pro) 3200mhz but its four sticks idk why i did that maybe for aesthetics i dunno if whether was a good idea or not. The question is can i enable xmp on my ram safely to 3200mhz or not because i heard that 4 sticks of ram might stress the cpu memory controller and eventually burn out the cpu memory controller especially with higher oc,i know you can do this with 2 sticks only with no problems but what about 4? Right now im using the stock settings.My second question is does enabling xmp or any other oc on memory could void my warranty on cpu or not, some people claimed that they lost the cpu warranty and been told that their memory was running at higher speed than was designed for. Intel says (i7 8700k max 2666mhz) anything above voids warrany? cuz i dont want to lose a 500 euro cpu. Could you please explain this things for me , in details if you got the time.
@HardwareForGamers
@HardwareForGamers 4 года назад
@@paulferenc Okay so this might be a bit of a long response, but by enabling the XMP profile of your memory will likely add some additional heat to the integrated memory controller and CPU (I would think 1-2 C). The only time I've ever really heard of a memory controller failing is when overvolting / overheating the CPU and that will degrade both the CPU and integrated memory controller over time. so as long as you have adequate cooling I really don't see much of an issue with overclocking a CPU or memory. And about the warranty watch this : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GMnoIRPHBms.html

Take out your motherboard cmos battery. Ik it’s been 2 years but that’s likely your issue. My pc would do that same thing but I found a guide saying to remove the cmos battery with a toothpick and wait 30 seconds and reboot. You’ll have to reselect your ram speed in BIOS. My 3200 reset to 2133 and during my restart the pc crashed thus causing the same issue you had.

It may also be that the voltage to the ram is too low, so it cannot run at full potential.
@tdrduarte
@tdrduarte 8 месяцев назад
Yeah, this is a tricky issue. I lowered the timings, the frequency, pushed more voltage, sometimes it takes days for me to get a BSOD error. It's pretty random. So, yeah, look into your motherboards. it was stable at 2666 with super low timings and it was stable at 3200 with only two sticks. But I couldn't get it to work without lowering the frequency from 3200 to 2800MHz and tweaking a lot the timings.

You can get more speed but your memory has to be single rank. Then 4 sticks will be more improved over 2. And usualy single rank memory is 8GB and under. 16GB sticks and above are usually dual rank. And there will be no speed up.

Well, if frequency difference is not that big, it may still be better to have 4 modules, because of dual rank thing. 4 single ranks sticks is like having 2 dual rank RAM sticks. And as I have heard, having more than 2 dual ranks does not give that much performance, and dual rank is harder to overclock, but it still gives a little more performance. Thanks for the video!

I’m actively going through this issue and after a lot of bios boots I’m pretty sure I have a definitive answer Mobo: Asus m5a97 Cpu: AMD FX 6350 BE Ram: 2 2x4gb gskill ripjaws x 1600 9 9 9 24 (16gb total) My board has OC Tune option that I took advantage of to get data. when I run one set of dimms I can set the D.O.C.P. (Amd’s xmp) to the advertised profile but freeze shortly after booting OS when running all 4. I noticed the boards auto tune wants to set the freq down with out changing timings but stock setting keeps the freq and loosens the timings. It seems that when running 4 dimms dual channel with the DOCP profile, you will have to manually raise the dram voltage slightly to make it stable or make a choice between advertised timings or freq. I think just about all g.skill ram has a heat sink so raising the voltage slightly to achieve stable advertised settings shouldn’t be detrimental, especially if you know your cooling is solid. I have not made any tests with a specific 4dimm dual channel kit and honestly I can’t find one to buy lol

Hey, Thank you for the amazing video. I still need help on this subject and if you could help me, I appreciate it. It's a fast question, I guess. So, I have an MSI B360M PRO-VDH board with 4 DIMMs, up to 2666mhz, it's a Dual channel motherboard. I'm currently using 2x4 DDR4 2400mhz from G.Skill (Aegis), similar to the video but different frequence and memory size. I want to add more 2x4 RAM sticks (same exact type from G.Skill), so I can have 16GB of RAM. That means I will fill all of the 4 slots. Will this work normally? If I place the second kit in A1/B1, will I successfully get the 16GB of RAM? I did some research and it appears that the motherboard (and every dual channel board does this apparently) will read A2/B2 as a 8GB RAM slot, and A1/B1 as another 8GB slot. Makes sense but I would like to hear from you!

Looks like that this is a common problem on the first gen Zen based processors and cheap motherboards with daisy chained 4 slot of RAM. It's less of a problem for Zen 2 and newer chips. I have a budget system with a brand new Athlon 3000G + ASRock B450M Pro-4 F R2.0 bundled together and 2 stick of SK Hynix DDR4 2400T, the cheapest DDR4 memory I could find. I can overclock the APU to its limit easily (4 GHz on CPU @ 1.3v and 1.7 GHz on GPU @ auto) but I'm struggling to get that RAM to anything over 2800 MT/s even with 1.4V. I thought, well, those are cheap 2400 MT/s modules, what should I expect? Then I realized I actually put those RAM in the wrong slots (A1 + B1). Moving them to the correct slots (A2 + B2) allows me to bump the speed to a stable 3200 MT/s with the same timings as the stock speed (DDR4-2400T) at 1.35V. So for this system, 2800 MT/s is the best speed slot A1 and B1 can reach. I'm thinking of adding 2 stick of 8GB memory with the same JEDEC specs to it just to see if it can run those 4 stick of RAM at that speed AND with a mixed module size.

@HardwareForGamers

That clicking on and off is the motherboard rechecking the memory, now if the motherboard has to check it more than three times the motherboard will reset to its default settings. If CPUz is showing you the memory running at 1500 MHz (double data rate) then the memories running at 3000 MHz.

@HardwareForGamers
@HardwareForGamers 4 года назад
All AM4 Ryzen CPU's and MB's are dual Channel. meaning it can run 4 sticks of ram in dual-channel. Which is increasing the amount of memory capacity not the actual throughput. The memory controller in the Ryzen 3000's are pretty good, so pairing them with a X570 MB you should be fine as long as the speed of the memory isn't over 3600mhz.

Hi, i just found this video after having a similar issue on my Asrock B450 fatality K4 Mobo. I have 2 * Corsair LPX CMK16GX4M2B3200C16 3200mhz 8gb sticks. all ran fine at 3200 XMP 2.0 in the BIOS. I added 2 more sticks of a different brand (on sale) same clock speeds etc, but found lots of BSOD issues etc. So i returned the sticks and purchased a set identical to the set i already have in the ,machine. The BIOS will not accept higher than about 2800mhz with the 4 sticks in. reading online this seems a common issue. The main thing i cant nail down is, i run a Ryzen 5 2600X cpu, but i cant tell if this is a memory control issue with the 2xxx series cpu, or if its a MOBO BIOS issue. I have seen that the 3xxx series ryzen CPU's are better with memory compatibility, but the question is, do i keep these sticks and run them at the 2800 for now, OR upgrade to a 3600/x CPU and see if thats happy, or upgrade the motherboard to a higher spec AM4 socket and stick with the 2600x. i.e. do you think this is more of a cpu incompatibility rather than the mobo itself?? thanks :)

It will work at stock 2133mhz ram speed (you will get 16 gigs of ram). This video is trying to explain that using 4 sticks of ram with XMP enabled (high memory speed) might not work. What happens is that when you enable XMP infinity fabric cannot always control 4 sticks of ram @ high frequencies that your ram supports, due to hardware limitations. I dont recall this being a problem with the mobo, because the memory controller is inside de CPU die.

HardwareForGamers i guess Corsair got rid of white kits in 3600 mhz 32gb or i just can’t see it on their site
@HardwareForGamers
@HardwareForGamers 4 года назад
That 3600 kit will be faster then that 3200 kit because of the timings, but check the motherboards compatible memory list. It should be on the the website.

If you do want 32GB I would go with the 4x8 kits. but look at the supported memory list first.

Thanks for video. i get %10 more fps when i use 2 sticks instead of 4 at same frequancy and timings. Also ram latency is about 44ns at 2sticks, 53ns at 4 sticks. There are many videos on youtube shows 4 sticks are getting much more fps because of rank difference. Do you have any idea what is wrong?

@@HardwareForGamers I am using 8700k, msi z370 gaming m5. Just bought CMW16GX4M2D3600C16 4x8 memory modules. 4 sticks didnt work at 3600mhz so i set frequency to 3333. Then i tested 2sticks vs 4 sticks at 3333mhz to see performance difference. I just discovered daisy chain topology. Maybe thats why it sucks?
@HardwareForGamers
@HardwareForGamers 3 года назад
@@Glaxycsgo I would also think that the motherboard is playing with the secondary timings of the RAM as well to even get 3333 to work, and that's why you're seeing such a performance loss. This is why you always need to check the memory compatibility list of the motherboard before buying 4 sticks of RAM.

At 0:55 you can clearly see where your problem began. You indicate that you are using TWO kits. The problem with memory is that it is extremely figidy. Using two kits, even if its the same exact mfg., the same exact model and part number will ALWAYS cause these results. The only real way to use two kits as a 4 dim setup, and get positive results, is by buying them at the same exact time, from the same vendor, and ENSURE that they are both the same version of that particular module part number. Corsair, for example, always places their module version on each stick. Buying two separate kits from Corsair, each showing for example (Ver. 5.31) will ensure you are getting the same frequencies and times and the same XMP file on all 4 sticks. Any change between two sticks, ie version, times, frequencies, will trigger the error that causes the Bios to continuously boot up until it resets all settings to default for a proper boot. Even tho the sticks you are using seem to say 2019 Mar, in march there could have been three revision’s to that particular module number. Also, even tho the CL times and frequencies might have been the same, any changes to the xmp file will trigger an error and thus prevent you from using the max performance of the sticks. Things to Take Notice On: *Another problem with going from a 2 stick bios config to a 4 stick bios config is that the Bios will SOMETIMES need to revert back to default in order for it to properly set 4 sticks into a dual channel config. Its not always the case, however, it is heavily dependent on the mobo and the bios being used. * The ultimate performance determinator will be the CPU. Memory is exclusively controlled and managed by the CPU. The type of CPU (AMD v/s Intel) will HEAVILY determine the performance of ANY memory configuration. Dual Channel, Quad Channel, Single Channel, 2 dims, 4 dims, 8 Dims, ALL will be determined, controlled, and adjusted by the CPU. The bios simply negotiates terms under which the CPU either accepts, re-negoitates, or totally declines to operate in. In your case, it was “re-negotiated” at a lower frequency.

Hi nice video but i have one question: i've 4 sticks of ram with 8gb on each stick i bought a gigabyte x570 ud and booted into windows everything worked but the ram clocked with 2133mhz i've heatd that this is the normal ddr4 speed. So i went into the bios and enabled xmp (these 4 sticks are rated at 3000mhz and are all exactly the same from corsair). But now the computer doesnt boot into windows anymore. Then i looked back in bios and only 2 of 4 had xmp enabled. I set everything back and my pc worked again. Do u know how i can run all 4 sticks at 3000mhz. Hope u could Unterstand me im from germany

First off your English is way better than my Deutsch. I've never experienced anything quite like that. Whenever I've set an XMP it's always been to all dimms. Which Dimms is XMP being enabled on? Like A2B2 or A1A2?? I will search around and see what I can find out.

Yeah, the memory controller in the Ryzen 3000 CPU's (zen2) are much much better. so overclocking the RAM is better and easier.
