How do Mexican people celebrate the famous holiday 5 de mayo? I've heard that 5 de mayo is a very popular holiday where people all around the world celebrate Mexcian traditions and customs. But how is 5 de mayo celebrated in Mexico?
Come with me and I'll show you what's going on in Mexico this cinco de mayo. I'm taking to the streets of Queretaro to show you what is really going on and how Mexican people in Mexico are spending the day.
I was surprised to find out that cinco de mayo is so popular for Americans when in Mexico, this is not one of our major holidays. It's an interesting piece of history and I wanted to tell you what cinco de mayo really is and where this tradition comes from.

Hi...some viewers might get confused about WHICH Napoleon did what in Mexico during.this time. The most well known was Napoleon the 1st. The Waterloo dude. However there were two other Napoleons related to the 1st who took power. I think it was Napoleon the 3rd that sent more troops to Mexico in the 1860s.

Jay Mo It was Napoleon III and he later abandoned Emperor Maximilian who was shot by firing squad in Queretaro. Maximilian could have escaped earlier on but did not.

Great video!! My daughter is a bartender and she is very busy working every Cinco de Mayo! 😂🍸🍺🍷🍹 I wish Americans appreciated Mexicans every day of the year. It is nice to see everybody happy and getting along during celebrations here in the US, whether the celebration is historically accurate or not.

Alas, the partiers are mostly not Mexicans. The Mexican restaurants celebrate for their customers to make money. In fact, we (Mexas) rarely go to Mexican restaurants. The food is insipid and we don't like it.

Excellent video. So, I am one of these who try to explain to Mexicans and Americans that the I nor my family crossed the border, it crossed us in western Texas. As a Mexican-American, I was expected to be part of a Cinco de Mayo celebration. Yet, it was never a day that was part of our family culture. In my younger school years in LA, the teachers would force me to dance Mexican dance and be happy for the day. I'm glad that you brought up 1848 and a little bit of the history. That is part of the Chicano history that is not being told anymore. Thank you for doing that this video.

My understanding is that Cinco de Mayo in the US is analogous to St Patrick's Day. In the same way Irish-Americans use St Patty's Day to celebrate Irish pride and culture, Mexican-Americans use to celebrate Mexican pride and culture. However, like St Patty’s day, Cinco de Mayo has been morped into another drinking holiday for WASP Americans.

Excellent history lesson and you touched on something that not even college students know. Napoleon appreciated the wealth of Mexico but underestimated its people and their desire not to be enslaved by foreigners. America sent a message to Mexico objecting to French soldiers on its soil because of the Monroe Doctrine and would invade after the Civil War. Mexico was in a no win situation and rose up against the French. I always felt Benito Juarez should have spared Maximilian’s life and sent him back to Europe. Roosevelt looked to Mexico to make up for the lost production when 14 million Americans fought in WW2, so he wasn’t that honest. Small wonder that Mexicans are suspicious of foreigners. ( The soldiers in the red pants were called Zouaves and were the best in the army of France.) Great 👍 video!

@@LaKarencitaMX We stayed 3 days in QRO and 3 Days in SMA and loved every minute. Our stay at the Apapacho Hotel in Guadiana (SMA) was amazing. On their rooftop bar we could see La Parroquia while having breakfast and we watched fireworks every night with a glass of wine. The parks were quiet, clean and the people were the best part, everyone was so friendly. We had a tour guide show us both cities on different days so we can see all the neighborhoods and real estate. QRO had the best night entertainment at the Plaza. It was such a pleasure to see how family oriented everyone is. The people in the plaza were generational and together; grandparents with their kids and their grandchildren, everywhere. It was refreshing and amazing. Here in California, most kids don’t want to be seen with their parents in public, especially where there is gatherings and entertainment. My wife and I felt so safe, the entire trip day or night. We could definitely call Mexico our retirement home in the near future, but it probably won’t be in these cities. I will have my 81 year old mom living with us and she wants her last years to be a coastal area (what mama wants, mama gets :)). So, on our next trip, we will be searching for a place that will suit her and my Great Dane (5 yr old dog). We are open to suggestions.

Karencita, Love your videos! One important fact that I feel is missing in the video is that in the United States during the Chicano Civil Rights movement of the 60's and 70's, people within the Chicano community began to identify with the "underdog" theme, and the struggle against colonialism that are parts of the larger story of Cinco de Mayo, and the Battle of Puebla. Unfortunately, by the 1980's this holiday became very co-opted by commercial interests.

I am so glad I watched this video!! I began planning an event for my fourth grade class and began research! I have several Hispanic students, so I desired to be mindful of their culture! I am sooo glad you shared this! We had a Fiesta during Hispanic Heritage month, and I'd considered a parade. However, the insight you provided was so much more valuable. Relating the students to their peers and study of the relationship of the holiday to the Civil War will be absolutely fascinating! Thank you for shining a light on my ignorance!!

I learned a lot from this video. I'm in my mid 70s, thinking about applying for residency in Mexico, and wishing I had done it 10 years ago. I live in Las Vegas, Nevada, where a lot of tourists don't realize that they're visiting The Meadows, Nevada. (A lot of locals do know that). There are two sides to Cinco de Mayo here. Of course, there are huge parties and events in the casino areas. But also, Las Vegas is 28% Hispanic. Hispanic/Latino/Latina children are the largest group in the County school system. So, in addition to the big Cinco de Mayo parties downtown and on the Strip, the County put on a Cinco de Mayo celebration at a park in the most heavily Hispanic neighborhood in the County. That's the one I went to. (I'm Northern Irish, by the way, born in Belfast). It was a huge event. I got there at 4:30, half an hour after it started, and there wasn't a parking spot within a half mile of the park. By the time I left, you probably would have had to catch a bus from your parking spot to the park. It was truly a community celebration of enormous pride in heritage. The food was awesome (and genuine), and the music was awesome (and genuine). I am so glad I went.
