What is the PhD Process and How Do PhDs work?! Today we are discussing Timeline, Milestones, and Yearly Expectations of a PhD program!
Hi Friends! Although it has always been my dream to get a PhD, until I got to college, I didn’t personally know ANYONE who had successfully completed the doctoral process. And I didn’t even really understand how PhDs are supposed to work until AFTER my first year! Sure, I could google “what is a PhD”, or “how do PhD programs work”, but when I did, half the time there wasn’t much information about the BASIC expectations of a PhD degree or when there was, I really didn’t understand what it all meant! So today, I went year by year to really unpack what are the basic expectations of EACH year of doctoral graduate program and some advice to remember as you move through your PhD program. Of course this PhD timeline will look a little different depending on your grad program, your graduate school, and your own personal graduate goals! However, this PhD timeline is a great template to get an idea for what a doctoral process looks like and how to succeed in graduate school as you pursue your PhD degree !

I'm a new subscriber. I love your page and appreciate your content. Thanks!! I just completed my Master's and have been heavily debating if I want to go that Doctorate route or not. And are we supposed to be applying for funding if we are applying to fully funded programs?

Hi! Thank you for subscribing and commenting! I would highly suggest that if you can to apply for funding at the same time. That way you can do your best to put your best foot forward to not have to depend on others to assure you have money for your PhD process! I do have a playlist all about funding grad school if you would like it here it is! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JLQpf15ZjlE.html

This is the first video I have found with a good amount of details about year 0. I am planning to apply this year. I hope I turn my hard work into something fruitful. Though many a time, due to confusion I am unable to finalize my research plan, my masters didn't focus on research methods, and that's the reason my field study in masters was not very strong evidence for Ph.D. Would you suggest some steps to me, so I make it better? I was doing Master's while working in the social sector and was too much into my work, as it was very demanding.

Thank you! I'm happy it was somewhat helpful! I think it really depends on your field and country you are applying to. For the US humanities program methods arent the MOST important and i don't think i even addressed them in my proposal but i imagine for STEM methods become more important. I think generally in the US context defining explicitly who you want to work with and what facilities/ initiatives/ programs you want to participate in for your research at your institution is very important. I have a video that discusses the application in more detail and has ppl from different disciplines discuss what they think is most important. Perhaps that will be helpful? Soon i will be coming out with a video talking about how i wrote my applications personal statement So maybe that will help too Here's the older application video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-495N0b8pBQI.html

Year 3 and 4 are you still competing weekly assignments as well?
@BrisaMarie
@BrisaMarie 2 месяца назад
Hi! So it depends.. If you have advanced to candidacy and completed the exams then you DO NOT have to. After you pass your exams you have completed everything you needed to graduate EXCEPT for the dissertation. For that reason, most people just focus on writing the dissertation. BUT with that said, you totally could if you wanted to take more classes you would have weekly assignments .... though for the most part in humanities programs its more like weekly readings and papers are less frequent but that changes per class/professor. so no, after year 3/4 you shouldnt HAVE to have weekly repsonsibilities, but if you wanted to ... you could.

Thanks for this video, very educative and informative. Without watching your video, I think I have planned my year 0 well. I finish my masters in November 2022 and started applying for PhD. I applied to 23 schools in Europe, America and Oceania, I got three interviews and finally got ccepted in New Zealand. I am starting my year 1 of 3 this November 2023. My supervisor has been helpful from application stage till I get accepted. Would you suggest I approach my supervisor with my timeline now or ask for timeline suggestions or wait till I officially get started? Do you see it as a good idea to take part or full time job with PhD considering that I am part funded? Thank you.

Wow that's amazing congrats!!! I think it's never bad to talk about your timeline earlier than later, this way you can have an idea of your advisors expectations. Honestly, I think being full-time (if possible) is great because you get so much time to really focus on your research. Unless you're work is directly related to your research then part-time may be better. It really is about what you're hoping your grad process looks like!!! Congrats again this is so exciting! What are you studying?

I don’t understand why language is important? Maybe it make sense if you read Russian articles?
@BrisaMarie
@BrisaMarie 3 года назад
Hi!! So Generally the language requirement is really specific to the humanities. But in most contexts (just like you suggested) there is often another language that either primary sources or important theories are written, so they want to make sure you can do complete research. There are possible petitions to not have to have a language but that is very specific to each program. ;)
