Two big questions for you today. First - how do shield-less bearings work? Are they a legitimate step forward in bearing technology, or is it just a gimmick designed to sound better? Let's take a look at the tech.
Second, how to get started in skateboarding. What should your first steps be, and what tricks should you focus on?

Bruh don’t be afraid. Just started using them myself and unless your constantly riding through mud, gravel, water, and other crap then you’re totally fine. I skate mostly parks or to work and these bearings have been far better than cheaper bearings I’ve been using for years and so far not a single problem with any debris every time I look at them they are pretty shiny even tho my wheels are filthy! I just wipe them and live them periodically. 10/10

The suggestion that you made for beginners, to learn about 5 different tricks in each different area of skating is a great idea. I remember back in the mid 90's, before public parks started popping up everywhere, I'd say at least half of the people I knew who skated, COULD NOT skate tranny. There was a spot in town with a really nice bank and hip, and those kids would just sit around and whine, or go home when we'd hit that spot. A buddy of mine had a mini ramp in his backyard, and only a few of us knew how to skate it... I didn't mind that though, fewer people gave me time for more runs, haha! Being able to do a little bit of everything is great. Pretty much, no matter what type of spot you go to, you'll be able to have some fun. It also makes skating parks tons more fun.. you can put together lines that cover the whole park, and cruise around and flow, as opposed to going back and forth all day only skating a flat bar or manny pad or whatever.

Heard all the hype about Bronson so I went out and bought their g3s, they were fast but they also broke almost immediately literally a month in. I've had the same set of oust skateboard bearings for 9 years . Mine are the Moc 5 Street. M o c stands for machine overhead clearance. It is a much better rating system for bearings and separates a gimmick from a gem

Awesome info, but I would also add that learning how to fall is very important to minimize injury and to be comfortable with trying new tricks. Whenever I teach someone how to skate, I show them that when you feel like you are. going to fall, drop low and turn sideways, tuck your head and roll into it leading with your shoulder. And to never super man pose, lol. I learned the hard way in middle school when I was going fast and my front wheels snagged a crack in the sidewalk and I went flying arms straight out and broke every finger in my right hand. After I healed, I noticed a judo guy roll into a fall after his opponent tripped him. So I practiced on carpet and grass and it's saved my ass plenty of times over the years, with only a few scrapes and bruises. 👍😎👍

skateboards are a mode of transportation first and a thing to do tricks on second. just skate as much as possible, then learn to roll off curbs, etc. once the confidence in going fast is there the tricks will come a lot easier.

Good video as always. About the bearings: sound (and heat) are created by friction . Less friction = less sound = less speed loss. In basic mecanics you try to have least possible of friction so cool sounding bearings are a gimmick
@derekperc
@derekperc 6 лет назад
This is true, but if you take the shields off of conventional bearings they get louder and you reduce friction. That's because there's not an actual increase in sound, there's just an increase in how much of it you can hear because you've opened up the door to a chamber of moving parts.
@jonasdonders1
@jonasdonders1 6 лет назад
derekperc that's very reasonable. But no lubrification in between of moving parts? A non sticking pan will never be as good as a regular pan with lot's of butter. No self respecting engineer would use these bearings in a machine. For skateboarding it's ok because you can replace them easily..

Im a machinist and ive skated for 30 years. Bearings NEED lubrication, and the idea of no shield is a terrible idea. It lets oil out and dust in. I use cheap spindle oil on my Reds, FKD's, Luckys, and they all last a good long time. Just a drop or two every week or so, and wipe off any excess or it will become a dirt magnet. I currently ride Bronson G3's and love them. Just my 2 cents. 🤘

i’ve been rocking those bronsons for about a year now, i like them they are very very fast and you don’t really have to do much to them to clean etc. but to put lube in you have to put the bearing in the wheel first then put the lube in so it doesn’t all come out

@@Advisory_Vessel wow. 2 year old comment. Still have them, they've been abused through dirt, road salt, snow. Best bearings for the money. Just wanted to say I tried the bronson raws and, after skating them twice, one of the bearings seized up because some dirt got into it. It makes no sense to design a bearing from scratch, specifically for skating without putting a shield on it... The shield is there to protect the inside mechanics of the bearing from the elements. Bones swiss perform much cleaner, for much longer. I do want to try out the Oust Moc 9 though.
@jigawhen

The sound of Bronson is almost tuned to the way it feels.. its like dirty, but not. The sound thing isn't a gimmick, it sort of lets you feel your board with another sense. Also, Biebel scrapes on like 60% of his manuals. Sorry if I ruined Christmas.

I've personally gone through 3 sets of the Bronson Raws. Bought the first set with a new complete, after a month more than half of them barely rolled and the outer ring was actually broken on one of them. Emailed NHS, told them how one was broken and provided pictures, they were all super nice and helpful, actually ended up sending me 2 more sets of Raws and a set of G3's. Unfortunately, had the exact same problem with the next set of the Raws and actually had the inner ball cage inside the bearing break as well. Emailed NHS about this as well, but got no response. Tried the 3rd set, and they were alright for about a week, then the ball cage on multiple bearings shifted out of place and kept rubbing and squeaking against the outer rings of the bearings. Got tired of dealing with it, switched to the G3's and gave the Raws to a guy at the skatepark. About 2 weeks later, saw him again, asked him how they were working for him, and the outer ring had broken on his. He told me he contacted NHS as well and they were replacing them for him, but I can only assume the replacements probably ended up performing the same as the others. I feel like they're decent bearings if you get lucky with a good set and if you skate strictly Skateparks or similar mostly clean and debris-free areas. If you're skating any street spots near dirt or sand, they will lock up on you immediately. They're mostly quiet at first but after a couple weeks they're honestly deafening. I know a lot of people enjoy the sound but I personally found it annoying. That's really personal preference though. All in all I think they're a very gimmick-y, sub-par product that's really just a cash grab so all their riders can run a brand new set every single day. There's absolutely no reason they should cost $40, nor are they at all worth it IMO. The G3's on the other hand, were just fine. Very fast right out the box, and seem to last just as well as any Bones I've ridden. My only complaint with the G3's is their shields are very thin, and so they bend very easily so be careful when tightening your axle nuts.

I am skating the Bronson Raw’s now, and I must note that when I got them I tried skating with them on a cold day and the bearings would barely spin and screeched and then stop when spun by hand, almost like a rusty one would do. I got it from Tactics and so when I sent them an email with an attached video of this they actually replaced them because it was so bad. However I was able to save the first pair and use it to a degree after adding a good amount of Speed Creme but now they aren’t incredibly fast. So I’d say these bearings are really flawed at best. And now I wish I bought Bones Swiss instead for a similar price.

I have tested them for about 5 months, they are good, loud and you don't have to clean them really, if the get a little stuck just smack the board on the floor and they'll eventually start rolling again, and if you really want to clean them you can just use goo gone or acetone or whatever, and you don't have to add oil, if you really want to put oil on it for your OCD use 3in1 dry lube or similar, and thats it, I would recommend them if you like noise, I like noisy stuff

my insight on the Bronson shieldless bearings is that they are just the same as any old bearing but they will last longer in the sense that you wont lose all ur speed after awhile of hard skating butttttt i will say since there isn't lubrication in them they don't go nearly as fast as other bearing with lubrication in it. if you don't like to deal with bearing maintenance and generally let your bearings go bad and still use them then i suggest them but if u do maintenance often or buy bearing when yours start to lose speed then you probably wont be interested in them

Bronson Raw shieldless bearings are my favorite alongside Carver bearings. Cleaning Bronson Raws is super easy. Forget what anyone else says, just pour a few drops of bottled water on the bearing and keep spinning the wheel super fast (mud will fly everywhere so don't wear your favorite shirt). When the wheel starts spinning better, pour a few more drops and let it sit for about 10 seconds, then flip it so that facade of the wheel is facing downward and spin it super hard again to let the last bit of the dirt and mud fly out. Repeat the above for the opposite facing bearing on each wheel. If the bearing is super caked with dirt and won't spin at all, pour a few more drops of water and let it sit for a few minutes. Apply extra pressure and revv the wheel back and forth in rapid succession. Think along the lines of a DJ scratching a record motion. Then repeat the steps above to get the smaller bits of dirt out.

Blood Eagle 88 I’ve read so many retarded things in this video’s comments, it’s insane. Thanks for correcting him and preventing some young impressionable kid from ruining his bearings because some idiot on RU-vid said to put water in them. Some other guy said to soak the Bronson Shieldless bearings in alcohol! Not only does this get rid of any lubrication, it destroys the special coating which allows them to be shieldless, and degrades the plastic/rubber holder/spacer thing for the ball bearings! And people blindly gave his comment likes, not even bothering to consider what it could actually do.

Bronson's reason to continue to produce shielded bearings instead of going completely balls out on shieldless would come down to sales - they will still sell plenty of cheaper, shielded bearings. Customers typically drive the marketplace, and often what a company thinks will be the best product for its target audience won't be unanimously accepted by that audience. Bronson can design and make decisions on what is the best bearing based on years of research and experience; customers make their buying decisions based on practically no experience or understanding of the product at all - this is pretty common when it comes to the buying decisions made in any market.

My best experience by now with bearing is the Bronson G3, Bones Swiss L2 bearing and bones big balls. Andale(swiss , pro rated and abec 7) dont roll for a long time, bones reds are ok because of the price, super reds are not worth the extra money of the reds.

Q: What difference does it really make, what brand of skateboard bearings you're putting on your skateboard trucks when you're already running all your axle nuts all loose and sloppy for the maximum amount of roll speed anyways? Hint: ground down axles.. - Axl G. Reese

How about doing one on skateboard wheel marketing and if there really is a difference? I remember in the 80s and 90s the companies would say their "thane" was the best because of their special formula. Then around late 80s, Steve Rocco put out a Gizmo ad and basically let everyone know that all the companies were getting their urethane from the same manufacturer, which was Uniroyal. skately.com/library/ads/world-industries-gizmos-wheels-1988

what do you think of NHS Fun Factory. They make the p2 decks and other skate parts and they say they test their products against their competition. They never release the numbers behind it though. Sounds like a scam to me or just a way to get people behind their product. I’m a long time subscriber and it’s really awesome to see you getting big. Take care bro!

boi P2 boards are manufactured by PS Stix, and screened with graphics from everyone from Plan B to Zero... Dwindle calls their carbon decks Impact, Powell calls it Flight... Basically, I'm saying carbon fiber tech is not exclusive to NHS, HELL Lib Tech decks are either mostly or ALL carbon fiber!!

@Myballshurt669 6 лет назад
John McDuggle I get that but they support all of their skate products by saying they test it against their competition but they never release any numbers behind it.
@johnmcduggle4032
@johnmcduggle4032 6 лет назад
boi , my point was/is, how can they compare P2 against the competition, when they're all the same?? NHS isn't the only company to do that... Lots of brands in various markets use Testimonials to validate their products....
@Myballshurt669
@Myballshurt669 6 лет назад
John McDuggle NHS does it with wheels bearings and all other skate parts though. They never release numbers proving that their product is better. The only thing I’m trying to point out is how can they use that as a marketing tool when they never show proof.

The Bronson bearings are amazing very fast and yes they do sound nice but they to be soaked in alcohol if you want them to stay fast they really need nothing to stay good they last a longtime
@JohnDoe-zq1ho
@JohnDoe-zq1ho 3 года назад
If you soak them alcohol without adding lubricant afterwards, you’re just ruining them. That special coating that makes them special? You’re degrading that, dissolving it into alcohol and then it evaporates. It disappears entirely. You’re completely drying them out and destroying the oils. Not to mention the plastic/rubber spacers for the ball bearings. Guys, don’t do this. He’s extremely far off from the truth.

John Doe dumbass they ate shieldless bearings look up online and RU-vid plenty of other guys out there do it and dipshit I longboard all season round for past three years ive been using bronson bearing they are perfect everyone that rides them says there amazing i clean my bearing once to twice a month and they are perfectly fine
@JohnDoe-zq1ho
@JohnDoe-zq1ho 3 года назад
Shadow Reaper holy fuck. Did you even pass grade school reading comprehension? I never said they weren’t shiedless! That’s the entire point of my comment. Those bearings are ONLY shieldless due to the fact that they have a special coating on them which prevent normal muck and dirt from ruining the ball bearings. Again, to explain this as simply as possibly: these shieldess bearings are treated with a special lubricant+coating, which allows for the shieldess noise/feel, but also utilized a ball bearing retainer (the greenish plastic/rubber insert which holds the ball ball ratings in position. Again, for the thousandth time, ALL OF THIS MECHANISM IS COATED IN A SPECIAL LUBRICANT which blocks out dirt and debris, allowing these bearings to stay fast without a shield. When some dumbass like you SOAKS IT IN ALCOHOL, you DESTROY THE SPECIAL LUBRICANT, and you BREAK DOWN THE BALL BEARING RETAINER, and thus RUIN AND ABSOLUTELY DESTROY THE BEARINGS

One thing that seems odd is that all that technology they mention about the material and design has no impact on why it is shieldless. I fail to understand why you couldn't use that material and have the deeper groove design and still use a shield. It seems to me that having no shield confers no benefit.
