Germans don’t like to sugarcoat. They just describe things as they are and if you’re not used to, it might seem pretty rude. But that’s just our culture and most of the time not meant to offend someone. Maybe it has a relation to our love of efficiency. We get straight to the point 😉

Sweden didn´t do war crimes (though we earned a lot of money by selling stuff to the nazis) and we aren´t patriotic either. We put up the flag during holidays or special days, or indeed when a football game is happening. But we don´t put sweden stickers on our cars and walk around with them everywhere, anytime
@TRex-dd4ze

Sweden should be patriotic. Also, have you seen this American political ad by a politician with a gun giveaway and a car explosion? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6WurKgebhaU.html

This is something I've actually wondered about a lot before. Like, the Swedes haven't done any atrocities or even went to war in like a couple of hundred years, so why do you carry such amounts of guilt? I know it might not be guilt as such, but seems like Swedes indeed avoid expressions of national pride and the amounts of Swedes that are concerned about racism is sky high. I understand that there's a lot more immigrants in Sweden than there's in Norway, Denmark or Finland, but the amount of carefulness around any subject that someone could consider as having racist undertones is just mind boggling. It's like when one listens to Sweden's media one could easily be fooled to think that country has a real problem with racism since the topic is so big. And meanwhile there's no evidence of this huge racism problem to be seen.

The whole "getting to know each other"-ting has a great analogy-example I think: Americans are like peaches: Softer outside, hard inside (easy to make contact and to get a superficial "friendship", but hard to actually get to a real friendship) Germans are like coconuts: hard outside, soft inside (hard to build up a relationship in the first place, but once you get to know someone and really become friends with them it is very likely long lasting)

In Germany we get almost every American show translated with realy good voice acting. We have our own movie and series production, but they are often for the older generations. The most famous show here is "Tatort" which is a crime series that comes weekly on TV.

Jim, me again, My wife and me, we travel a lot, we met Americans who were very educated and very nice. In USA then traveling from NY to LA, we met a lot of nice Americans, who did not know anything about the rest of the world (OK that was 1991). When we told them, that we were from Germany, every one and their dog seemed to have a relative stationed in Germany.LOL. When in 2012 we visited San Diego, we met a lot of soldiers. This guys were so amazing friendly, knowledgeable etc.. Even on a bus a homeless veteran wished us a good stay in San Diego. As everywhere in the world, people who have seen more than their hometown, County or Country, will be more knowledgeable about this world. You and yours please stay safe and sound. Greetings from Germany.

Americans are peaches, Germans are pineapples. Americans are nice and friendly, but to make a really good friend is difficult. Germans are very cautious at first, but when they decide to open up, they are friends for life. Patriotism: We (as a nation) used to be that way "Am deutschen Wesen soll die Welt genesen" (The world shall better itself by following the German way") was an often-used phrase during the 2. Empire, Weimar Republic, and Nazi-regime. This didn't work out so well. Nowadays it's more like "I'm happy to be German and to live in Germany, because [insert whatever you fancy most: environmental consciousness, social system, functioning democracy, economic resilience, beautiful landscapes, historic architecture...]. But it is never "My county is the best (implying that all the others are worse). And that's how we perceive American patriotism - America first and all others far behind and below. That's not bees, it's wasps (normally a pest in August, not this year). We Germans are direct, no beating around the bushes. It wastes too much time.

About jaywalking: There might be some crazy law (as the german government loves its beurocracy), but many germans do it. The only rule of thumb is: do not do it when children are around, to not be a bad example.

Sorry, germans are brutally honest, that's the way it goes ^^ Regarding friends we even make a difference between a known person, a friend and a close friend and such close friendships often survives untill your death. E.g. my oldest friend is from the 5th grade we met at school and we would do everything to help us out if needed, although living in different countries in Europe. Regarding us friendliness from a german perspective: Its nice, refreshing and opens barriers quite fast but on the other its not understandable to get invited from a neighbour to come over for a beer and once arrived realizing on their faces that this invite was just used pro forma for friendliness and not meant really. Thats way too much. And true, I would really wish the US-Americans more payed vacation days to get out of your nice country to see how things are done in other parts of the globe, not all of them are bad indeed :-) There so much to see and understand and reconsider afterwards. I was three times in the USA, a 2-month trip driving with a oversized caravan a big circle through North America and even as kid in a summer camp (great experience^^).

People like you have it in your hands to show the rest of the world that you are different too. My personal stereotypical way of thinking about Americans, for example, is that Americans are not very self-reflective. And if they try, they are lying to yourself because they are describing it beautifully again. There is always a "but" afterwards. 😁 You are one of those self-reflective who I believe that they really see it that way. But we do not notice this, precisely through americas political actions. If that makes sense to you. Btw. Sarcasm in our definition is very different from yours. That's why you don't have one for us Germans. Whenever I heard something sarcastic from Americans and they said afterwards that it was sarcasm, I just thought wtf. That is not sarcasm. This is at most a bit ironic but not sarcasm. 😁

Don't try to defend American education while watching RU-vid to educate yourself about other countries ;) :P Germans won't waste your time by dancing around the bush but tell you right away what's up. For a German, the definition of "friend" is someone you can call at 2:00 AM to say, "I killed someone!" and who then replies: "Just let me get my shovel." All the others are only "acquaintances". Of course everybody likes a Hamburger: it was invented by Germans. I've seen American RU-vidrs visiting or living in Germany asking why fast food places like Mäckes (we never say the full name McDonalds, unless for an interview though) are a thing over here while we call out the US for it but when they taste the difference they understand. To hear that stuff is sometimes the only affordable food for people (working people) over there is just plain sad. Besides our own shows, we have lots of American shows here on our TV channels, of course it's all dubbed into German (no joking). Yes we follow the rules of the road, that's why less people get killed in traffic. You can definately spot German tourists too! Not only through the accents.

That was brutally honest and kind of impolite and rude, that is kind of sad. Because we although love so much about the American way of life, pop culture, music, movies, online university lectures (myself), almost every series or movie in Pay TV is from the US or Britain. Trump really damaged something inside of us and changed the way we looked up to the US as a place of democracy and freedom, human values and the American Dream. By trying to find out what is going on over there, we almost entirely focused on the trumpiest part of society, that changed people's view of America.
