How do tyres affect fuel efficiency?

In this episode we take the electric Land Rover Defender 130 out for some test miles but at the same time we thought we'd see what the affect of different tyres have on fuel economy. The results would be the same irrespective of whether the vehicle is petrol, diesel or electric powered.
Tyres that we tested are:
Maxxis - Trepador (325/75 16)
BF Goodrich - All terrain (265/75 16)
BF Goodrich - Trail Terrain (265/75 16)
Michelin - Pilot Sport 4 SUV (265/60 18)
To try to normalise the different tests as much as possible we set the vehicle height the same, drove the same route in the same way and accurately measured the amount of energy it took to drive the 50 miles via the battery management system.
The results are surprising.

I know from running a 44 ton truck that the most important thing to attend to is correct inflation of tyers. Under inflation can cost thousands of pounds in fuel on 120,000 k per year . Over inflation can cost hundreds of pounds on tyres by wearing out the centre treads.

Good test. Worth pointing out the EV does not change weight as the fuel is consumed. This test on a petrol vehicle would be slightly skewed.

The road tyres look so odd. In other news, testing has shown a strong correlation between tyre efficiency and a reduction in daylight.

I often see caravans (in Australia) running around with off road tires. After seeing this I have no idea why they aren’t choosing the most road optimised option even if they go off road. It’s not like caravans wheels provide propulsion

Another great explaination and experiment showing what a difference tires make. You started with 157kw in the battery. If we take your figures and convert them to equivalent kilowatts based on increased efficiency you get the following: with the Max AS Trepador tires at 157kw battery capacity you'd need a 188kw battery to achieve the same range as with the BF Goodrich All Terrain Tires, 215kw to match the BF Goodrich Trail Terrain tires and 224kw to match the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV tires. From all Off-Road to 100% Road tires you gain 67kw worth of equivalent range. Mindblowing.

Very interesting. I did wonder about tyre pressures. On our Defender I changed from MTs to ATs and there was a huge improvement in driving feel. Very happy with the Hankook Dynapro ATs in LT.

Fantastic! Makes for a long day for you guys. I expected getting away from the aggressive off-road tires would be helpful; I did not expect such a linear improvement with each new set. Very useful info.

Thanks for that, I can relate to these results. I use my camper van a lot in the winter and put on a set of Bf AT tyres. Noticeable noise increase and big reduction in fuel economy ie from 40mpg to 35mpg. Will be back to road tyres in the spring!

Great video, and whilst I knew the tyres would make a difference, I didn't think it would be that much. Must say on my V8 Pick Up (when I had it) I purely moved away from Off Road Tyres due to the excessive noise, yes even with a V8 and performance exhaust, the noise was unbearable

I was surprised by the performance of the trail terrain tyres - to be honest, given the off road I currently do I'd probably plump for those over the all terrain unless I was planning some serious green lane/mudplugging. We can't do much rock crawling in the UK but well worn off road tyres seem to do the trick for that too from what I've seen.

Interesting comprison. I think it would be important to state the wheel dimensions, speficiations and weight as potentially a large percentage of difference would be the weight (both tire and rim) and size of the tire that results in the efficenty difference.

Absolutely. I also would like to know if the truck's computer has the ability to change/set tire/tyre circumference so speed and distance can be equalized. It appears that the weight of the tires goes down from a ton to a respectable amount for the highway tire. The additional weight of the monster tires with monster wheels could easily have added a couple hundred pounds to the load. All of this affects the efficiency of the truck and any truck or car they go on.

@@robeigner4390 I appologise first as this is a long comment. Without knowing the tyre sizes I can't give exact figures for weight, but looking at the overall height of all 4 tyres, the mud-terrain tyres look taller, so in effect at 55mph (sat nav speed) there would be less revoloutions of the tyre per mile compared to the other 3 tyres. This effectively means the motor would not be used as much. Saying that, the chunky tyre takes more energy to turn as the sidewall height is bigger, meaning there is more resistance within the tyre (internal friction) to rotate it & the tread design itself also increases the rolling resistance, as I expalin later. Compare that to the Michelin SUV tyre, which is designed to have less friction within the tyres construction and the 18 inch wheel reduces the sidewall height compared to the (very similar) overall height of the all-terrain & trail-terrain tyres, which are on 16 inch rims (resulting in a slightly taller sidewall). The other significant benefit of the SUV tyre is the tread pattern itself, It is designed to offer lower rolling resistance because there are continuous strips of rubber going around the cicumference of the tyres that reduces the rolling resistance as the tyre tread is always in contact with the road. With a 'block pattern tread' (the other 3 tyres) every time a block of rubber hits the road, the block effectively tries to stop the wheel turning, which dependant on the severity of the block, increases the energy required to turn the tyre (i.e. the rolling resistance) As for the unsprung weight of the tyre, yes this will impact on the economy too as the power unit has to use more energy to turn the wheels. In essence, the mud-terrain tyre has everything against it. It has large rubber blocks which act as a brake every time one comes in contact with the road, there's extra rubber used in the constuction of the tyre (heavier), the sidewall height is bigger and thicker to reduce punctures (again increasing weight & friction), all of which increases the weight & internal friction of the tyre reducing the rolling resistance. Compare this to the SUV tyre, which has continuous tread in contact with the road, thinner & smaller height sidewalls, all of which, adds up to a lighter tyre/wheel with lower rolling resistance resulting in a vastly improved road handling and fuel efficient tyre. As for the all-terrain & trail-terrain tyres, they have varying combinations of the above designs, so it shouldn't come as a surprise why they fall into their respective positions in the overall result.

At the end of the vid you said that the % gains applied to petrol exactly the same. I could be wrong, but I'm not sure that is true. IC engines are heat loss dominated. They lose so much energy to heat that it will skew the gains. The gains are there but not to the same extent. -- Thanks for the vids. Still waiting on that Miata NA/NB ev conversion package 🙂

You still need to output the same energy - the efficiency of the engine doesn’t go up at higher power level.

@@JohnR31415Actually the efficiency of an internal combustion engine varies substantially with power output. Generally the efficiency goes up with load (to a point). When you hear people say engines are 30% efficient, that’s at peak efficiency. Elsewhere in the power curve it can be as low as 10% - which is where it will be most of the time if you’re driving in traffic. Engineering Explained did a great video about this: “The best way to compare engine efficiency: BSFC”

Thanks Richard. Another 47 miles/kilometres for every 100 driven shows that, for road use, it is worth choosing the correct tyre for the job. It's worth throwing away your macho card if you want economy and a better driving experience. It would be interesting to know what the difference is with the full road tyres on the smaller rims of the off road tyres. My guess is that they will be around 50% more efficient than the off road ones.

Many of my fellow Americans drive on paved roads with their rough terrain tires. I can hear them coming down the road from around 0.25 mile away. Plus, they’re in their huge V8 trucks petrol or diesel trucks. Some trucks are equipped with air brakes, and they love to use them often. However, EV sales are way down in the States. On the other hand, I understand that - they’re freaking expensive here. Anyway, back to morning tea

I have a few coworkers in here in Canada who live on acreages on paved access roads who drive SUVs with off-road tyres & spend $25 per day on gas to get to & from work in the city. It's not about good decision-making so much as the vehicle is a giant security blanket. Apparently a Vietnamese EV company is building a factory in the US which will produce sub-$20,000 EVs with a 248-mile range starting in 2025 or 2026. This may explain why Tesla has been dropping prices.

Thanks for the effort you put in here, I know that changing just one pair of Land Rover tyres is more than enough. Very impressive result from the trail terrains. I'm still keeping the Insa Turbo Special Tracks on my Discovery though, the diesel engine drowns out the tyre noise!

Great video, as always. But I think you should buy a ND filter. I don't know which one, I myself bought a K&F variable filter with the highest range, but a that is probably not necessary. I'm posting this comment after the seeing the first minutes of this video. I'm going to enjoy the rest of it now 👍

I'm willing to bet there would also be a reduction in wear on the motor & drive train to go with the improved efficiency. If the motor is working that much harder, it's wearing out that much faster.

I was just replying to a comment further down and have come up with a gruelling tyre changing fest of a test for you guys! Test not only tyre types but combined with tyre sizes! Where are the sweet spots for having bigger tyres to increase ground clearance plus aesthetics and maintaining reasonable fuel economy? So how much of a taller tyre starts to effect fuel economy negatively and how much of that loss in economy can be clawed back by opting for a more Road biased tyre? Can a taller tyre, especially one that is more Road biased, actually improve economy for a given type of engine and to what limits? This obviously will vary across vehicles depending upon where their torque curve is and (as I assume you did in this test) would have to be done over a confirmed, measured distance not from the milometer as this would vary in it’s accuracy relative to the tyre size. Of course you’ve also got tyre width thrown in there but I think you’d just have to go with keeping that as near the same as the natural progression through bigger tyres would dictate, ie accept that a taller tyre is also by default going to be a little wider for stability but not wantonly increase tyre width. How about it gents? Are you up for the challenge. I think an electric vehicle would be a very good platform to do this test from given it’s clean torque delivery.

This is very interesting and I'd like to see if it really does convert to Diesel. I drive a Defender 130 with BFG mud terrains - not as bad as the Trepadors but worse than the all terrains. I currently get 24mpg but would be blown away to get near 34mpg with road tyres!

Fuel vs Cool.... Those road tyres look naff though! Would be curious as to the weight difference between the Maxxis and the Road tyre, as that will have an impact. I've got Toyo Open Country's on my Chevy, and whilst they are a big block off road tyre tread, they're surprisingly quiet for what they are. (I took off the slightly smaller BF AT's).

😎 i always ran my NCF Diamond on 205x16 Michellin/continental type Mud and snow pave blocks enough grip for 90% surfaces without being horrible on the Fast roads or through twisty roads.... No power steering so I wouldnt bother with aggressive offroad tyres.. Petrol price as well 😬 Tyre pressures always the big variable .

Great comparo gents. While I assumed some efficiency loses with the tough guy tires, I’m gobsmacked just how much compared to the 2nd Goodrich set. I’ve got the Pilots on my Mini SE and can’t find “EV rated” tires in the size I need. Would be interested in a back-to-back with both non and EV tires on one of your sportier conversions to get an idea of what additional range we may all be leaving on the table by making do with the “petrol” tires on our EV. Marketing hoo-ha or real world advantage? Cheers!

You didn't take into account the overall diameter of those wheels. The Trepadors are significantly taller than all three of those other wheels. That makes a huge difference to energy needed. I think a really interesting comparison would be if you can the pilot sport tyres on a huge 22 or 24" wheel so that they will be the same diameter as the trepadors and compare the two. then you would really understand how much more efficient the road tyres are.

No, it affects the torque required, which is not an issue as the vehicle has plenty spare. I accept that the more variables that are fixed the better the comparison but manufacturers are fitting larger and larger wheels to cars and it's not to make them less efficient.

@@DrRogB Mostly disagree. Whilst electric powertrains have a linear torque curve, larger wheels effectively use more energy to spin up to an equivalent speed. If torque was the only factor involved with efficiency (energy for a given velocity) then the tread and tyre depth would not affect the efficiency…..But that is clearly not the case here as the tests proved. Those three equal diameter wheels run on the same drivetrain torque showed significant efficiency differences. Again if the torque was the deciding factor in energy use the efficiencies would have all been equal.

We mentioned tyre pressure was the same. It was raining a little all day and night. The LED lights would have had no impact as their amp draw is so low.

No, those microphones often pick up minor noises and amplifies them.

I think, for a proper comparison, the difference in height (and hence drag) should not be "ironed out". The height difference is in actual part of what the tyres change about the vehicles energy consumption, because that's part of how the vehicle is supposed to run with given tyres. So, while correcting the height certainly gives you differences based on the characteristics of the tyres, alone. You create a bias in favour of tyres that increase the overall height of the vehicle. In the end a proper comparison would include height differences and tyre pressures typical for the type of tyre. And that would result in much larger differences in efficiency, than you showed in your test.

Hmm, I have the BF Goodrich All Terrain’s on my Land Cruiser and am now thinking I will get the Trail Terrain’s when it comes time to replace them. I mostly cruise forest service roads and really don’t need the KO2 capabilities as often as I thought I would. Thanks!

on my old chevy astro I switched out to load range C tires (as a cargo overload thing) and got 3 xtra miles a gallon.with 50 psi. and the line you should have used there was "If he doesn't get his beauty sleep, I going to DIE"

and the overloading of the van was for BURNING MAN !!! - where I live in the alternative Energy Zone - with 2 solar generators ( the lithium one is worthless for the Burn) the ultimate solar garden light ( looks for all the world like a victorian cast iron street lamp , 7 ft tall) a solar cooker ( no fuel, no fumes) and a. composting toilet - that at the burn I can sit on in the back of my truck and watch the world go by!

Great video, however, the results would NOT be the same for a petrol/diesel vehicle. A electric motor is 90+% efficient at turning energy into movement, whereas ICE tops out around 30% (I think some have got close to 40). This means that the difference in tyres has less impact on total fuel consumption, as ~70% is wasted (mostly through heat) long before it gets to the wheels. If its a 90% vs 30% efficiency at the wheel (obvs theres transmission losses in reality), then that would mean an ICE vehicle would see 1/3 of the difference in efficiency between wheels - so around 14% better on the road tyres vs off road, which is still considerable when driving a thirsty beast like that.

Do not know how much impact the weather played on the varying results. Sunrise to dusk, wet or dry, warm to cooler, head or tail wind or no wind. How warm or tackyvor slippery did those tires get?

Weather was pretty much the same all day. It was a bit cooler in the evening but not by much. Wind was the same.

@@alibro7512 Yup, colder conditions should increase aerodynamic drag, no doubt. However, I would assume for this kind of beast rolling resistance probably uses the greater portion of total power needed to average 55mph, than the aerodynamic drag does ... so it shouldn't influence the result much

are you taking circumference into account (assuming you have not kept a gearbox) that will make a huge difference in electric but will be equalized via gears on ICE / hybrid / electric conversion with gearbox. On diesel and petrol I see very little mpg difference between pilots and ko2 (low single digits) but way more changing transfer ratio between 1.4 and 1.2. This is based on 40,000 miles driving down to spain and france at motorway speeds. you need to run this with same final output speed in EV

Noise is for the blind or poor-sighted pedestrians to know that car is coming fast... That is why police cars, ambulances and fire engines here get so many complains and tickets, because they go over speed limits without using siren.

Nice comparison! These bespoke conversions are cool. But we are soon going to be facing a transition point where large numbers of interesting petrol powered cars become obsolete. We are also going to be seeing a major change in battery technology when the solid state factories are on stream and a major change in motor technology with the in-wheel motors with the axial flux motors. It is clearly not worth trying to build volume conversion kits with the current technology available, demand isn't there and the technology is about to change. Have you given thought to future plans?

The results probably don't translate to petrol or diesel cars the same because of the inefficiency of the ICE engine. A similar effect is seen when towing. The road tires will be better but likely 15% better instead of >40% A large amount of energy just goes into keeping the engine running and that is fixed regardless of load. So if you use 1 liter of fuel to generate torque X, only half of that (say) is generating the torque, the rest is waste. So, if you need torque 2X, you only need 1.5 liter. No, this is not an 'advantage' for ICE cars, what it means is if you buy an ICE car big enough to tow your boat, you are effectively towing half that boat around with you ALL THE TIME, because that bigger engine is guzzling that extra fuel. Electric motors are insanely efficient. So doubling the load means using twice the power. Bottom line is that you are going to be seeing the effect of the tires much more clearly on an electric vehicle than on ICE. This is also why electric cars mean lower emissions even when the electricity comes from fossil fuels. 45% efficient generation followed by 90% efficient drive gets you 40% overall efficiency which is twice as good as the 20% efficiency a really good ICE engine manages.

I have Toyo Open M/T 255/85/16 on my 110 and when I hit 80 km/h the front wheels start shaking and the after 85 km/h it stops. Does it all have to do with the balancing? Thanks for your content, still saving up money to go electric on my 110 😂

@@jonasschnackkrogWheel balancing is essential. The bigger the off road tyre the more weights are required. However, I’ve noticed they can easily drop off, the tyres can rotate on the rims and mud collecting in the grip all can cause wobble. 👍

17:50 do not get FOOLED by the graphics! The jump from 0-20% is the optically the same, as from 20-37% (although there is a differnence of 3%!)- The jump from 37% to 43% is optically ALSO THE SAME - although it is ONLY 6%!!!!! imho: It would have been better to end the day and make a propper graphic on the next day: 2 big jumps in efficiency from MT to AT and Street. NO GAIN to street only tires.

In addition: PLEASE note that this is NOT Fuel consumption! This does NOT = the saving in FUEL! Because the most important factor at 80km/h is aerodynamics. Leaving the roof rack at home will probably safe more fuel, when you go highway speeds; and not shppping with your 4x4.

This is why All tyres are compared to the Maxxis. The difference between tyres 2 and 3 was not shown, only the difference between 1 and 2 and between 1 and 3. How is this not a measure of fuel consumption? Energy used to turn the wheels was the thing being measured aka energy consumed. The aerodynamic profile of the vehicle was kept constant, no change in energy would be shown if tyre choice made no difference compared to aerodynamics.

On highway (according to a German Car Lobby, ADAC) 70% of fuel consumption is caused by aero. 19% roll resistance. But Note: roll resistance is NOT only caused by tire profile but MOSTLY by tire air pressure. Plus width and diameter plus weight of the tire. A 33" MT with 5 bar is probably WAY BETTER than a 35" street with 3,5bar. So the profile ITSELF is just a FRACTION of 19% and within this fraction you can save the mentioned 20%-37%. = you cannot even measure the difference in highway in fuel@@watcher24601
