How Do Unipolar, Bipolar, And Multipolar Power Structures Affect Global Politics?

Power distribution in global politics has historically shifted between states. In a Unipolar world, one state has a hegemony, or total power in the system. A bipolar system refers to power shared between two major powers. In a multipolar world, there may be multiple centres of power. Power distribution is also related to power diffusion, often seen in today's world, as exemplified by political scientist Joseph Nye, who argues that the growing power of non-state actors has the ability to destabilize traditional ideas of power distribution.

Going into 2022 I would think that the rise of India and China in particular would mean we are heading into a multi-polar world which looks more like a world of international cooperation and collaboration rather than a unipolar world where one hegemonic state does the dictating. I think a unipolar model is not suitable for the future. Examples are sanctions imposed by the US on issues it does not like. To me this is childlike. When the US says it is a champion of democracy yet does not recognise the govts of some other countries this represents a double standard. The US talks big about diversity within its own country yet does not like diversity (multipolarity) on an international level? There are so many things the US does which are at odds with true international relations of cooperation and collaboration. To interfere in other nations elections/governments to me is a manipulative process and yet the US State Dept does it everywhere (ie Ukraine 2014, Thailand, Georgia, Chechnya). Is this the hallmark of a State championing democracy and sovereignty?

Congratulations on how well you are boiling down information to the essentials, which requires effort and a good overview. Just two minor suggestions: on the bipolar illustration, Sweden (as a then neutral country) is not the best example for a state aligning with the US. Similarly, for the multipolar illustration, the UK is perhaps not the best example, while India will increasingly be.

Hello, another interesting and high-quality upload, thank you. I didn’t get how can the answer determine wether I’m a liberal or realist(maybe because I don’t know exactly the difference). I think nowadays there is like 4D chess game, 4 dimension systems are unknown and seems unrealistic and nobody talks about it, so are these influences that come from Russia, USA, EU or few other countries, I’m talking about ‘behind the curtain’ system and a good example of it is again Georgia, no one wants to actually handle the conflict, occupation or the influences, because everyone has profit from it, even though they deny it, because it’s like less honest. I tried to be laconic, if the point is unclear, I’ll try to explain more into details. Cheers!

Thanks for the comment! And thanks for watching once again!! You make an interesting point about how much in international relations happens without us knowing about it. As for realism and liberalism - simply, realists see the world as one where you can't trust others so states primary concern is their own security... whereas liberals believe that states cooperate with each other for mutual benefit. If you want to learn more about it, I recently made a video on realism vs. liberalism too! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Hl43BizGd5c.html

@@KorczyksClass I don’t know how exactly ‘relationships’ fit it, it is more like ‘usage’, but yes, I think there are hegemonies in our time too, it just evolved and become more stealthy. Thanks for reply and disclaimer :)

As a neorealist, I agree with Nye on the current status of military and economic power but I do not view non-state actor as the main actor of global politics. Terrorist groups, Institution or Organization, they are tools of State. Terrorist knows they couldn’t exist without State system, which is why we are all witnessing the terrorist dilemma from the statecraft of Taliban in Afghanistan. International organization merely implies the mandate of State to represent its agenda, soft power and sphere of influence to the region and the world.

Your 1815 map is incorrect. A certain state only came into existence in 1924. Prior to that, it was part of an empire.
