How do we work with the people we're talking with to make conversation flow smoothly? What tools can we use to show we're engaged? In this week's episode, we talk about common ground: how we build it, whether it differs for face-to-face vs. online communications, and how memes and new turns of phrase can help conversations and communities along.
This is Topic #58!

Anyone else think this guy sounds like Kermit from sesame street or is it just me?

I love this channel, this episode and the whole idea of The Ling Space. If we could just take the speaker's voice down an octave or maybe just a major fifth, it would be just perfect.

+Ned Danison Glad you're liking it! I'll see what we can do voice-wise, but I'm not sure it'll be too much, really. But it's worth experimenting!

I always thought that building the common ground was about dealing with given and new information.

Is there a particular term for a word like "small" being converted into something like "smol"?

I'd thought she was Adelaiez. Similarly, I'd thought you were Moe T. And Dr. Tyson was Nieldegrass. Interesting. I'm also remembering the comments from several pages of Stand Still Stay Silent.

I wonder whether the word "smol" will appear in lexicons 200 years from now.

+Jay Reed Hard to say! It'll probably stay around as a variant, even if it ends up becoming archaic, because we're pretty good with the lexicography these days. But it may just legit stick around. It's really hard to know at this point. ^_^

My Internet common ground appears to be redditors who participate in r/StevenUniverse.

+Will Dalton I feel like I can understand that okay! The pairing names make sense, too. Although I bet there's some stuff that I don't get in terms of terminology being just a Steven Universe fan, but not participating in that community. We do have a Steven Universe-themed ep coming up soon, though! ^_^
