How do we Define Rare Vintage Baseball Cards in The Hobby? Response to

I watched Rick's video about rarity and it definitely peaked my interest about how I look at rare vintage baseball cards. I thought that he brought up some great points about rare vintage baseball cards and what is considered "rare."
I agree that research can be done to further investigate rarity in the hobby outside of pop reports. However, it would take a lot more effort and some inquiries to dig deep into some raw rare vintage baseball cards. There definitely is a fine line!

One thing I was chasing with a buddy 20 years ago were cards from the 80s that had very low pop counts in 9s and 10s. I think there are some of those cards that are rare because of their centering issues. I agree that Rusty isn't a rare card, but is it and will it be in a PSA 10? Hard to tell with that card I guess. 1979 PSA 10 Ozzie Smith might be considered a rare card. Anyway, it was kind of fun to chase a Marc Hill (1979) and a few others back in the day in a high grade.

My 57 Swift Meats Jim Gilliam and my 1960 Topps Tattoo Jim Gilliam would be the more rare cards of his that I have in my collection. On a rarity scale 1-10 with 10 being the rarest, 57 would be a 8 or 9, the 60 Tattoo would probably be in the middle. Those cards that are seen as novelty stuff and regional only releases to the area they played in, that’s the hard stuff to find. My Tattoo is raw but I’ve never seen a Swift Meats raw of his or any other player.

Enjoyed the video! Yes! Not all low pop graded cards are rare. Now on the rarity scale for me the 54 stahl Meyer mays would be on a scale of 1-10 1 being the rarest a 5 or 6. His 53 Briggs meat could be a 4. Your playing tips I bet is closer to a 5. Has a pop like the Briggs meat but I’m sure because of the odd size the pop is closer to the stahl Meyer than the Briggs Just thinking out loud

@@vintageoddballcards6103 I can't agree with your rating. The Stahl Meyers are tough to find and the Coca Cola Test Tips are just as challenging, if not more challenging than the Stahl Meyers. I think the best way to determine this is if we were able to discover how many raw ones exist. I'm sure they do, but when they come to market, they're usually in auctions. When they're presented in auctions, they are normally graded first. Given that they are typically graded, this all goes back to how many graded copies exist. According to GemRate, the 54 Stahl Meyers have a total of 36 graded between SGC and PSA. The Coca Cola Mays has a total of 30 graded between SGC and PSA. Going back to your second comment about naming 5 people that have one, we are a part of a niche market of collectors, but that market is not small by any stretch. We are serious Mays collectors and as such, it's expected that we'd be seeking out some of the more unique Mays pieces. It's not a surprise you can name 5 people that have one, but there are a TON of Mays collectors that would love to have one in their collection. Ultimately, our outlook on what is rare is different and that's cool. I think the Coca Cola Mays and Stahl Meyer are a lot lower in the rare scale, IMO.

@@SammyThunder that’s why you have a scale. Sets like 1903 breisch Williams 1904 Allegheny 1924 Diaz cig are much rarer I can come up 30 sets that are rarer. How somebody determines what’s rarity is up to each individual. I tend to be more strict.
